ORONO, Maine –
Brittany Smith's goal in the 39
th minute in proved to be the game-winner, as the UMaine field hockey team defeated UMass Lowell, 2-1 on Friday afternoon at the UMaine Field Hockey Complex.
With the win, the Black Bears (10-4, 4-1 America East) have now won three consecutive games, while the River Hawks (8-9, 2-4 America East) drop to fourth place in the America East with the loss.
Libby Riedl gave the Black Bears an early lead in the 7
th minute, but the River Hawks tied the contest in the 16
th minute. Following halftime,
Brianna Ricker fed a beautiful pass to
Brittany Smith, who scored her second goal of the season for the game winner in the 39
th minute.
Emma Cochran improved to 10-4 on the season, registering four saves, while UML's Eva Berkhout falls to 7-9 season, with six saves in 70 minutes played.
Maine controlled the pace of play for the majority of the game, registering 14 shots, while limiting UMass Lowell to eight. Each team registered three penalty corners on the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 7' | Casey Crowley dribbed the ball into the middle of the Maine offensive end, dished the ball to Libby Rieldl, who deked past a River Hawk defender and deposited a low shot to the left to give Maine the early lead.
- 16' | UMass Lowell's Katie Lynes initiated a penalty corner, as Torrie Huk settled and shot the ball low and to the left to equalize the score at 1-1.
- 39' | Shortly after play resumed from the halftime intermission, Brianna Ricker passed in between midfield and the attacking zone all the way to Brittany Smith in the scoring position. Smith corralled the pass, and shot to the low right to give Maine the lead for the rest of the game.
