Distracting the Duke

Rate this book
Devonshire, England, 1820

Determined to avoid the strife-filled marriage of his parents, Marcus, the Duke of Ulvercombe, wants an amenable, biddable wife, and has set his cap for a certain pretty miss. Unfortunately, her vastly opinionated, frustrating, and lamentably beautiful guardian, Lady Clara Tinniswood, keeps distracting him, tempting him to consider a far more tempestuous—and passionate—union.

Recently widowed Lady Clara Tinniswood wants only to organize a quiet new life for herself, beyond the control of any man. But one shockingly unguarded moment while confronted by Marcus’s gloriously naked body catapults her headlong into a forbidden passion and threatens to undermine all her well-laid plans.

Even if Marcus abandons his sweet ideal and surrenders to his growing desire for Clara, there's one unalterable issue which could destroy their hopes forever...

Elizabeth Keysian is a multi-award winning, USA Today bestselling author of heart-pounding Regency romances, set mostly in the West of England. She has completed a unique series for Dragonblade Publishing called Trysts and Treachery, which is set in the Tudor era. Though primarily a writer of romance, she loves to put a bit of mystery, adventure, and suspense into her stories, and refuses to let her characters take themselves too seriously.

Elizabeth likes to write from experience, not easy when her works range from the medieval to the Victorian eras. However, her passion for re-enactment has helped, as have the many years she spent working in museums and British archaeology. If you find some detail in her work you’ve never come across before, you can bet she either dug it up, quite literally, or found it on a museum shelf.

Distracting the Duke 'Distracting the Duke' by Elizabeth Keysian is book One in the "Wayward in Wessex" series.  This is  the story of Marcus and Clara.   This was my first book by Ms. Keysian and I must say I truly enjoyed it.  I will be looking for more of her books!Clara is a widow who had a very bad marriage that left her somewhat traumatized.  But she is trying to help her brother and their ward with the season and finding a husband.  Marcus is a Duke that is out to find a "brainless, biddable beauty to bear his children".   Marcus at first is thinking that Clara's ward might be the wife for him and tries to get to know her better.  But Clara is being a distraction to him.  Some of his first interaction with her was seeing her with a turban on her head and looking like someone in her thirties.  But after a humorist run in he starts to see that she is younger than that and it pretty.  But both have their funny bickering and still have certain thoughts about how each ones attitude is.  But the more they interact the more they start to see how wrong they are about the other.    Both in their past have been abused in one way or another...their attraction to each other just keeps growing.   This was one book I could not put down and enjoyed it so much!  It does take you through some laughing, crying and hope that they will overcome their their sad past. "My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read."

This is a book that successfully walks a difficult line between between being funny but not silly, sincere but not serious, and having genuine conflicts but not being too angsty. It caught me at just the right moment, as I wasn't in the mood for anything too cute or too gritty or too innocent or too sexy.

One of the things I liked was that in the first few pages I was gripped, the characters clearly and sympathetically drawn, and the conflict and attraction were right there. It reeled me in.

I loved loved loved all the English details - the brambles and the rain and the beach. It was all quite lovely.

Clara is excellent, fiesty and opinionated but not stupid. Marcus often treads a very fine line between being a decent bloke making arrogant decisions, and being a bit of a you know what.

For my taste, the ending was a bit too neat and saccharine. But hey, it's very comprehensively HEA, and that's what we sign up for with a romance, right?

What do you do when you need a wife but want one that is agreeable, biddable…you go for the women you want but find what really attracts you is the opposite. Marcus for the life of him can’t understand why Clara holds so much appeal she isn’t at all what he is looking for. Clara has had enough of controlling men. When her husband died she said enough is enough and decided to have a nice quite life man free. Clara is everything Marcus doesn’t want in a woman she is opinionated, outspoken and shoots from the hip not caring what anything thinks. Clara isn’t interested in any men but dang if Marcus doesn’t get under her collar.

They just can’t seem to stay away from each other as they go head to head, toe to toe arguing and disagreeing. You won’t get them to agree but they enjoy this bickering back and forward. They keep taking steps away from each other but seem to find they take more towards each other. How can two be that are so wrong for each other be so attracted to each other. When they finally face facts there seems to be no hope for them since one need to get married and the other never wants to get married. Heck they might be attacked to each other but Marcus refuses to marry a woman he doesn’t like it’s never going to happen and Clara will never trust another man as long as there is breath in her body. You know what they say about saying NEVER……

I really liked the characters the author gives a wonderful plot that is full of excitement. I loved watching these to go at it both making their own demands. Maraca is very controlling not asking but taking what he wants, very alpha male. Where Clara stands up to him putting him in his place. What is there not to love about these two who give you such an exciting read. The characters were delightful and highly entertaining with all the bickering back and forward I was hooked and could not put the book down. For a debut novel you can tell the author put a lot of time and thought into writing this. I am not much on conflict and drama in my life but lord I love it in my books. I really enjoyed this found it to be a very fun read filled with humor, romance that was very entertaining. I feel most will really enjoy this and the author should be proud of herself. GREAT JOB!

I loved it! Duke of Ulvercombe and Lady Clara both are amazing characters, and perfect for each other. Marcus is looking for a wife who is agreeable, biddable, and easy to talk to. Clara is a Lady who is very opinionated and have a hard time keeping her opinions to herself. She is straightforward and outspoken. There is no way they can ever like each other. They tend to be an annoyance to one another and their interactions often end in disagreements and arguments. Still for some reason they seem to crave each other's company. Soon they both realize that regardless of their mutual dislike, they are attracted to each other. Unfortunately there is no solution for their dilemma. The Duke must marry and he is not willing to marry someone he doesn't like. And Clara does not want to marry again, she will never trust another man for as long as she lives. Therefore, they have no future together and thus they must let themselves to have their futures separate from one another. But will it be that easy? Can they both find happiness and end up with what they want most? Or should they just let go of their respective pasts and be happy together?
It's a very well written novel. I couldn't put it down once I started reading and read the whole thing in one sitting. I quite enjoyed the story, as well as Marcus and Clara's banters. Their constant bickering was quite entertaining. I found it full of hunour, romance, and lots of fun. Definitely a must read for all historical romance readers. :)

The blurb sounded promising but I found the writing bland and the characters not particularly likable.

Marcus seems shallow. While plotting to court Ellie, he then deliberately flirts with Clara even going as far as to embrace and kiss her (twice!). It wasn’t even attraction then, he goes about it rather coldbloodedly. When he does start developing feelings for Clara he doesn’t make it clear to everyone that that he is no longer intending to court Ellie

Clara too perplexed me. Seemingly distrustful of men & Marcus in particular she puts herself (thrusts would be more appropriate) in situations: barges into his private quarters to confront him when his butler has already told her he is indisposed. Several other situations that made me think her a contrary, female. On one hand she pushes him away & the next she’s sneaking after him with a spyglass & watches him bathing nude in the ocean *rolls eyes*.

ARC Review: Distracting The Duke (Wayward In Wessex) by Elizabeth Keysian

The Lady and the Duke are like fire and ice. THEY DON'T MIX. He wants even tempered and sweet. She is volatile and opinionated. She wants to make her own choices and live a life beyond the control of a man. He wants a woman unlike her. Or does he? Distracting the Duke is a tale of passion that merges a battle of wills with a meeting of minds and ultimately the stealing of hearts. Mine included.

It's 1820 and Lady Clara's husband Simon passed away, which means she's free of his horrors. She finally has the chance to be her own woman and doesn't want another man in her life. Her family's fortunes are in trouble and their ward has a good chance to be officially courted by Marcus, the Duke of Ulvercombe. They can't think of a better match and it would mean a happier and independent future for Clara and financial relief for her brother and his wife. Making sure their ward spends enough time with Marcus numerous visits are being arranged.

Marcus is looking for a wife. He wants a family and children and is determined to find someone he genuinely likes instead of having an arranged marriage that is a good business deal. Therefore he's looking for a gentle woman who won't disagree with him. He doesn't want any fights in his home and is looking for a nice peaceful life. When he meets Clara there's a spark, but she has a fiery character and is the exact opposite of the kind of future wife he is looking for. Is Marcus prepared to change his wishes to be with the woman who makes his heart beat faster and if so does he have a chance with Clara? She makes it clear she doesn't want to get married again, so is he willing to go to great lengths to convince her she's the woman for him?

Distracting the Duke is a wonderful romantic story. Clara is a damaged woman. Simon was a scary man and he hurt her badly. She's afraid of all men because of what he's done to her and I had tears in my eyes when I read about what kind of man he was. Clara is smart and isn't afraid to speak her mind. She's also kind and caring and hides her lovely personality behind a prickly attitude. I loved the endless discussions she has with Marcus, Elizabeth Keysian writes with a great sense of humor and I had a lot of fun reading their dialogue. Marcus is a gentleman with a friendly character. He tries to remain polite and calm and doesn't show the sweet side of his personality to everyone. Because of this he keeps surprising Clara. He can see straight through her behavior, which made their connection even more interesting. They have plenty of chemistry and they are quite evenly matched. I equally loved both of their characters and enjoyed reading their story very much.

Elizabeth Keysian's vivid descriptions of her characters and their surroundings immediately make her story come to life. Distracting the Duke is entertaining and vibrant. It was fun to read about the beautiful houses, fascinating business transactions, amazing artwork, fabulous clothes and delicious food and drinks. There's also a layer of depth, because of Clara's awful past and the impact it has on her future and Marcus's difficult childhood. Elizabeth Keysian writes about it in an empathic way, which makes the story well balanced. I really liked this spellbinding love story and highly recommend it.

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.

Personal disclaimer: No it will not effect my thoughts or this review, because I was lucky to have stumbled across "Distracting the Duke",before getting a free copy,on Wattpad.

My favorite reading genre are historical fiction, and humor. So, when I picked up "Distracting the Duke" I truly was hoping for it be as historically accurate as possible, with some humor added, if not a lot, and it was like a dream come true and I did what any sane person would do in my place, that is to absorb everything possible and continuously read, to the point where my eyes hurt from staring at the screen for too long.

A problem that I have with many recent historical fiction books is that they are labelled as "historical fiction" but are absolute garbage. As they are written in the view of a lady or lord from hundreds of years ago,but with modern thought processes and sentences. Which, to my limited historical knowledge, would not be common in the intended era. It is unappealing, and a reason why I don't have many expectations, before I start reading particular books. Thankfully Elizabeth read my mind some how,and wrote in narrarator's point of view, while using proper sentences and a thought process belonging to the time the story was set in.

The book captivated me from the first paragraph, and I was drawn to it by the amount of details she provided. While making the story the main focus,as well as ensuring that her readers would not get bored by far too many unnecessary details she added intelligent conversation and created an atmosphere, that was allowing me to feel as if I was also a part of the ball held by the Duke.

The character development was the best part of the book for me personally. I appreciated how Clara was stubborn but not to the point of being wreck less,or seem like a silly toddler and the Duke was serious, but not to the point of being a one dimensional and rude person. I found that the characters having flaws made the story more relatable and enjoyable as well. I HATE when authors show the female lead as some sort of insane yet broken piece, pretending to not need a companion yet shamelessly flirting and pretending to be insecure while being arrogant and, excuse me, bitchy. The male lead as some sort perfect angel believing that the world revolves around him, who then makes everything better.
I wanted to hug Elizabeth for staying far far faaaaaar away from the sordid cliche.(THANK YOU)

The story was well written, the characters were interesting and the chemistry between Marcus and Clara was nothing short of enchanting. I particularly liked that they were not tearing each other's clothes apart with in the first few chapters or that the story was not solely focused on their physical attraction towards each other. The inhibitions and ambition for each other is a great contrast when properly used.

Now,there were a few things that I didn't like,or am just being critical about for no apparent reason; Firstly, I wish Mr. and Mrs. Weston's relationship was explored a bit more,or at least at some point Marcus should've walked in on them having a private moment, that would have been the best. I also wanted Ella and Clara to have had more time spend together just chatting or being silly.
Secondly,I wish Clara was a bit more conservative especially because of details from her past. The scene where she see's him cloth less I think it would have been better if it was written as accident rather then her accidental intention of wanting to know where or what he was doing. I mean she is stubborn so it appeared a bit silly.
There were no spelling errors that I caught or horrible grammatical errors, except I do strongly believe that the last line of chapter#31 should have been "certainly not"instead of "probably not" I know I am being very picky. That is what I know/understand Clara would have thought.
My last complaint, and I am sorry I am saying this,is that I wish the story cover was not as it is. I love imagining the characters and how they look like,so when a photo of humans is the first thing I see I get a bit discouraged, because it slightly takes away from imagination. Like,if instead of these gorgeous people in embrace, were a silhouette of them in embrace it would have added to the mystery and piqued my curiosity much more. Since,I absolutely love your books and writing style I knew that there was a lot more to the story than it's cover, but I can also see people being discouraged that this would be a soppy hormonal cliche, when it is the complete opposite.
I know and feel I am being far too critical but I only want to the best for your future endeavors in publishing your works.
To wrap this up;
YES,I would surely recommend buying "Distracting the Duke"it is very well written. If the eBook is less than $8 though.
YES,Elizabeth writes like an angel, her stories completely consume me until the very end. Check her other work if you like historical fiction.
NO! it is not a cheesy "story" without any development beyond physical attraction.

Oh,and before I forget you guys should definitely follow her social media pages,I get so happy that she answers individually and sincerely like with her writing I would not even mind her never replying lol.
In the very end,I want to wish you well with the publication of "Distracting the Duke" and I hope you continue you to inspire me with your writing, and continue to publish more stories. You have a talent for sure and I will be supporting you for sure.

Hopefully my review is taken as it is meant to be,constructive and not offensive.
My well wishes,

I won a copy of Distracting the Duke by Elizabeth Keysian at a FaceBook party. Yay me! I'm always on the hunt for new (to me) historical romance writers and this one goes in the buy her books column. Ms Keysian has delivered a book that is well-written and filled it with phenomenal characters. Marcus and Clara's story is loaded with drama, humor, a bit of suspense and spice. I enjoyed this book from cover to cover and look forward to reading more from Elizabeth Keysian in the future. Distracting the Duke is book 1 in the Wayward in Wessex Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

Lady Clara Tinniswood and her family have recently moved to a town where nobody knows them. It is her hope that her and her brother’s ward makes a very good match. Marcus, the Duke of Ulvercombe, hated the type of marriage his parents had. Because of that, he wants a beautiful, biddable wife. He thinks he’s found the one that will fit perfectly. The only hitch is his attraction to her guardian.
I really didn’t think I was going to like this book and actually put it down for a few weeks after reading the first page. Something made me decide to give it another chance. I’m really glad I did. Once I got past the first few pages, I got caught up pretty quickly in the story. It reminded me loosely of one of my favorites, Pride and Prejudice. I loved everything that happened between Clara and Marcus. They both had scars in their past and they are able to heal each other. I look forward to reading more from this author. I highly recommend.

Marcus Albemarle, the Duke of Ulvercombe, wants an amenable, biddable wife, and has set his cap on Eleanora Soper. Unfortunately, her vastly opinionated, frustrating, and lamentably beautiful guardian, Lady Clara Tinniswood, keeps distracting him, tempting him to consider a far more tempestuous.
Recently widowed Lady Clara Tinniswood wants only to organize a quiet new life for herself, beyond the control of any man & hopes to set up a home on her own soon. But one shockingly unguarded moment while confronted by Marcus’s gloriously naked body catapults her headlong into a forbidden passion and threatens to undermine all her well-laid plans.
A very good debut novel, the characters were well portrayed & certainly not two-dimensional. Both Marcus & Clara have suffered abuse, he by his father & her by her husband. Their verbal sparring is highly entertaining & the chemistry between them goes from warm to hot. Marcus is everything you want in a hero, gorgeous, understanding & compassionate. Clara vowed never to trust a man again after her disastrous marriage but Marcus is so caring & patient that it was lovely to see her gradually coming alive again. The late night in the library is so moving. I certainly look forward to more books from the author

Received an ARC for my fair review for netgalley. I enjoyed book, it was about 2 people who are attracted to each other, but both wanted different things out of life. Marcus needs to get married but wants a biddle wife, or a doormat I say, so he chooses Eleanor, who will be a great match for all, since her family needs the comfort this wil bring and her guardian will be free to live her life on her terms, since she had a horrible marriage. Of course things do not go as planned and even though Lady Clara and Marcus try to resist each other, they can't, and they get there HEA and they truly deserve ut, since they come from difficult backgrounds.

I read quite a bit of historical fiction and Ms. Keysian is now one of my go-to authors! I quite enjoyed the writing and the story line. At a time when women were considered less as people and more as a way to further social standing and family wealth, it was interesting to see Clara's struggles between societal norms and her own happiness. Seeing the two main characters finally follow their hearts was very satisfying. And there was just the right amount of heat and passion between them too! Definitely will be reading more from this author!

I first came across the author's books a couple of years ago and she is easily one of my favourite. The characters in all her books and definitely in 'Distracting the Duke' are so interesting, charismatic, stubborn and passionate. All their insecurities and flaws are laid bare to us but it just makes them feel like real people.

In 'Distracting the Duke', they do not seem like a good couple, initially, as they seem to hate each other but we slowly get to know why they have built walls. What's amazing is how exciting and thrilling every interaction is; the smallest touch or look sent tingles down my back. I couldn't wait until they were left together and when they kissed 😚.

There is mystery too so as well as the main romantic story, there are smaller subplots that are written so well.

The author knows how to write really well and if you like a good romance book then you must give this one a go. You won't regret it. If you like regency stories then even better but be prepared to be scandalised! There are some naughty parts too 😉

I have been lucky enough to have received this book in exchange for an honest review. Happy reading.

Brilliant book I stayed up late to finish it even with night feeds looming in the early hours.

Premise in short: Duke wants to marry a biddable woman but ends up falling for the woman's guardian.

Only reason this book isn't 5 stars is it took the characters too long to get together in my opinion, I would have liked them to have been together for a bit before the end of the book.

4 Stars - Received from Netgalley for an honest review.

HOLY GUACAMOLE!!!! This book was so damn gripping! With the wee one teething and the toddler 'toddlering' I don't usually manage to finish the first chapter let alone the whole book. The point of difference here is that Keysian writes an 'unputdownable' book.

If you are hoping to read this slowly BEWARE!!!

3.5 stars.

I mostly enjoyed this country-focused Regency romance, which pits the opinionated, determined widow, Clara, against the opinionated, determined duke, Marcus, who both have very different views when it comes to marriage.

I liked Clara a lot more than Marcus for most of the book. It’s clear her marriage was awful and has deeply affected her views of men, but she’s still determined to find the perfect match for her ward. She cares for her family and wants the best for them, even if she has rather given up on love and happiness for herself. Marcus, by contrast, is rather selfish at times, can be rude and enjoys playing with Clara like an inconsequential play thing. He’s not particularly nice for most of the book, although he does show flashes of unexpected kindness here and there that stopped me from completely disliking him. Despite this they do actually make a good couple, and some of their sparring matches are amusing, I just wish Marcus hadn’t been so blind about certain things for so long.

I also enjoyed the setting and the feel of the book. It sits really nicely in its setting with a good sense of the period. And for the most part I enjoyed the fact it was set in Devon. Although… Devon isn’t in Wessex, so the series title irks me a bit. I’m also very confused about them needing to go all the way to Norfolk in order to enjoy the seaside and seafood. They’re in Devon! Devon has miles and miles of coastline and some of the best seafood and fisheries in the country. Judging by the mention of the moors and sandstone, this book is mostly set near the south coast, so that truly baffled me. It’s fine to just say he has an estate in Norfolk he needs to visit, don’t make up blatant untruths (such as not being able to get fresh seafood) to explain such things.

Away from that, there are some interesting side characters, particularly amongst Clara’s family. A little more character from her ward would have been nice, but her relationship with her brother was an interesting mix of affection and exasperation. I was a little confused about their place in society, though, because there’s a definite sense of resentment towards Marcus’ high position at times. I was also irritated by the use of Lady Clara throughout. Throw in Marcus’ high handedness towards the end, where he forces Clara into a confrontation that he really had no business orchestrating and I’d say that while I did enjoy this book, I didn’t perhaps enjoy it quite as much as I might have hoped.

Overall this was a good start – to this series and as a debut. If you like antagonistic Regency romances, then this has plenty of clashes between its main characters, as well as some lovely period details and added sweetness and heat. I’m interested to see what this author comes up with next.

I was given an ARC through NetGalley and the Publishers for an honest opinion.
This story was a really nice read. The two main characters are surely meant to have a HEA. Lady Clara Tinniswood is a recent widow and who has a tonne of scandalous baggage to carry with her. Her recently deceased husband was a through 'rotter. Not only did he treat his wife very cruelly but her seduced her sister and made her pregnant. Lady Clara feels utterly betrayed by the situation and also very wary of any situation that involves men of high rank. Her family have had to move to the country because of financial constraints.
The hero of this story is Marcus, the Duke of Ulvercombe and he has his own bit of baggage, that his parents were not exactly loving ones and that his family has also had financial problems that have just been solved. These two main characters are lovely together as they snap at each other and then they find that that they are attracted to each other. I feel there should have been a bit more information on Lady Clara's former marriage and her deceased husband for the reader to understand her fear of being locked in and also other fears that she showed. I do hope there will be more books about the other characters that appeared in this book. I recommend this book with 4 1/2 stars.

in distracting the duke, marcus, the duke of ulvercombe, is, as austen might put it, a single man with good fortune in want of a wife. but he wants a marriage that is free of strife, having grown up in the toxic atmosphere that surrounded his parents' loveless union. he figures that to get that, he needs to find a sweet, innocent woman without strong opinions.

and he has a great candidate, miss eleanora soper checks off all the boxes, except he keeps getting distracted by her argumentative guardian, lady clara tinniswood. at every turn she challenges him, about their families' past connections, about the weather, there is nothing this woman won't argue with him about. but unlike the horrible dread and persist awfulness that surrounded his parents' arguments, marcus finds himself enthralled by clara.

quite literally, he can't stay away from her. he keeps trying to remember that he's supposed to be courting eleanora, but the reality is that if clara is in the vicinity she holds all his attention. and it's not just that he's attracted to clara sexually, he finds that he enjoys the time he spends with her. it's exhilarating in a way that most society interactions are not. she challenges him and he feels alive.

he also recognizes that she has some baggage that causes her to keep him at arm's length. her first marriage was not a happy one, and her husband was emotionally and physically abusive. her sister also betrayed her by sleeping with her now-dead husband and bearing his illegitimate child. so that's a lot to deal with. once he figures out what is holding her back though, once marcus realizes that only clara will do, his previous statements of milquetoast wives bedamned, then he goes after it.

he may not win every argument he has with clara, but this is one he can't, he refuses to lose. and this is what is great about the book, marcus might have some doubts about how he feels for clara, and it definitely takes him some time to decide what it is he wants, but once he figures it out, he fully commits. i mean, from the moment he meets clara, all he does are things to please her, to protect her, to make her happy. and when he realizes that his life would be colorless without her, he goes about making things right. he brings back the light to the dark corners of clara's heart, he makes himself so irresistible, he proves to her that he will love her no matter what the future holds. and it's so freaking romantic.

Clara is a widow....having been widowed , after the death of her monstrous husband...., Marcus is setting his house right...replenishing his families estates and now on the hunt for a biddable wife.....

Clara is chaperoning Ellie, she is beautiful and a perfect description of what he wants in a wife....but if she is perfect , ...why is he parring with Clara...why is she the one he thinks of...

This is a wonderful story, there was some serious betrayals in the past with Clara and her husband...abuse and much more.....there is a lot of roads to build for Marcus to get to her....I was a wee bit nervous about Ellie and the Duke at times.. it was a sorta triangle...one he "wanted to love" and one he did...

I must confess, the Duke is hot...and the tenderness he shows to Clara makes hima wonderful hero...Thank you netgalley and Elizabeth for such a wonderful book to read...

An absolute delight!

A dashing duke, a worthy heroine, what better way to spend some very pleasurable hours diving into a thrilling Regency world of romance and scandal. Ms Keysian breathes such life into her characters, both major and minor that I found myself swept away and turning those pages very rapidly to find out what happened next. All the ingredients are there for an exciting read: likeable characters, great settings, intrigue spilling out of the drawing room and the bedchamber….
I loved the attention to detail and the interesting figures of speech. The author had clearly done a great deal of research. I also liked the way the novel was placed into a historical context, with the odd snippet about what was happening at court. After reading an excerpt of the book online, I rushed off to buy it. I highly recommend everyone to do the same. I promise that you won’t be disappointed.

I loved everything about this book.  Clara and Marcus keep me on the edge of my seat - laughing, swooning and believing that everyone has a soul mate out there just waiting to annoy them.

Their story is seriously entertaining.  Clara's family is in a bit of a financial pinch and Marcus needs a wife.  So Clara and her brother work towards coupling up their ward, Ellie with him.  On paper, she looks and seems like the perfect fit.  It's a win-win situation.

It all would have worked out perfectly if there wasn't such a spark and connection between Clara and Marcus.  It's undeniable - even though they try and try.  The more they fit their attraction, the more you want them to surrender to it.

It makes for an exciting and engaging reading experience.  You love the characters and all the hijinks that they find themselves in while denying how they truly feel.

Overall, I thought Distracting the Duke was an excellent read and it's one that highly recommend.  Definitely check this one out.

Marcus Albemarle, Fourth Duke of Ulvercombe, Lord Wroxham, etc, etc. He was hoping to court Ellie, (Miss Eleanor Soper), a wealthy heiress. She was young, biddable, and pretty. He thought she would make a perfect duchess. Lady Clara Tinniswood was Ellie's guardian and they lived with her brother and his wife. The story is rich in personalities and they make the story glow. There is also a good dose of humor to add a light-hearted touch. I loved this tale, with the way they show their feelings and handle the people around them is amazing. Unfortunately, there is fear, of a spouse, ruination, being abused again and the dark. The author did an excellent job of keeping your interest. It is a very hard book to put down.
I received this ARC from Net Galley and voluntarily reviewed it.

Oh how I loved this book and the main characters, Clara and Marcus. They just really felt right for each other.

I especially loved that the conflict for Clara giving in to him was the previous abusive marriage. How the author handled the issues there was well written.

Having been in an abusive marriage with a narcissist, I could understand how Clara didn’t want to get into a relationship of any kind with someone. The fear of abuse is so pervasive in your mind all the time. Despite my loneliness I just can’t risk the potential of more abuse.

I received this from Netgalley/ publisher in exchange for an honest review. this is the first book in a new series by Elizabeth Keysian. I must say I was not in love with this book. We meet Lady Grace and Lord Marcus during a ball in which Marcus is supposed to court the ladies ward. I was hoping for a good read but I just did not love Marcus. At the end he was way too bossy for me! He just puts his hands where they were not needed. Just an okay read for me.

This is a fun, entertaining read. Marcus and Clara are interesting, entertaining, relatable, intriguing, fun, complex characters. I enjoyed their romance and the path it took to get to their HEA. These two together sparked and their exchanges were fun to read. The secondary characters added to the fabric of the story and my enjoyment. This is a good start to the series and I’m looking forward to reading the other two book. The story is easy to read and get into.
