Post-Match comments: Texas head coach Michael Center

AUSTIN, Texas – No. 9 Texas (4-1) won the doubles point and added three singles wins in a 4-1 victory over Drake Saturday afternoon at UT's Edgar O. and Melanie A. Weller Tennis Center.  The match was contested as part of the annual ITA Kick-Off Weekend event, which features 15 four-team tournament sites around the country. 

The winners of each site advance to next month's ITA National Team Indoor Championships at The University of Virginia.  UT meets Oregon on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT for a berth at the ITA National Indoors.  Rice will take on Drake in a consolation match Sunday at 10 a.m.    

Texas opened the match by winning the doubles point.  Freshman Christian Sigsgaard joined redshirt sophomore Julian Zlobinsky to knock off Ben Stride and Ben Wood by a 6-1 count at second doubles.  UT clinched the doubles point at the first slot where sophomore Leonardo Telles and senior George Goldhoff defeated Vinny Gillespie and Calum MacGeoch, 6-1. 

Texas freshman Yuya Ito staked the Longhorns to a 2-0 lead by way of his 6-2, 6-0 win over Drake's Barnaby Thorold at fourth singles.  The Bulldogs responded with a straight-sets win at second singles, but Texas put away the team win with singles wins at the sixth and third positions. 

Sophomore Rodrigo Banzer put away Ben Clark by a 6-3, 6-1 margin at sixth singles, and sophomore Harrison Scott closed out the victory with his 6-2, 6-4 win over Stride at third singles.
