Women's college basketball: UH defeats SMU in AAC opener

DALLAS - Jasmyne Harris scored 27 points, Myyah West added 16, and the University of Houston held off SMU in the teams' American Athletic Conference opener Saturday afternoon.

Angela Harris and Serithia Hawkins had 13 points apiece for the Cougars (12-3), who won their fourth consecutive game and matched their victory total from last season.

McKenzie Adams scored 25 points on 9-of-20 shooting for SMU (6-8). Kiara Perry and Dai'ja Thomas added 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Rice 67, Columbia 44

Erica Ogwumike had 16 points and a season-high 19 rebounds, and the Owls used a balanced scoring attack to dispatch the Lions at Tudor Fieldhouse.

Wendy Knight and Lauren Grigsby added 14 and 12 points, respectively, for Rice (10-2), which set a school record for non-conference victories.

New Orleans 70Houston Baptist 52

Lauren Calver scored a career-high 19 points, but she couldn't prevent the Huskies from losing to the Privateers in New Orleans and falling to 0-2 in Southland Conference play.

Sydney Carr contributed 11 points and six rebounds for Houston Baptist (4-8).

Taryn Taugher scored 17 points to lead the Norse to an upset over the No. 19 Phoenix in Highland Heights, Ky.
