Match Report
Eng Lions U19
By Conrad Anderson at Parc Eirias, Colwyn Bay
England Lions clinched a tight game, as both teams gave it their all and served up a entertaining hard fought battle at the home of RCG, Erias Park, Colwyn Bay.
Wales started the game slowly as they conceded the first penalty for off-side and gifted England good field position.
The Welsh initially defended the first attacking set well, but a monstrous kick from Oliver Lewis which saw Luis Roberts fail to deal with the high kick, which saw England punish Wales in the next phase of play.
Josh Milnes provided the platform for the pass to go outwide and send Keiron Lawton to score. The conversion was missed.
England scored again in quick succession, they utilised Wales right edge and created an over lap which saw Reece Storey score, Tyler Hart missed with the conversion.
At 8-0 down the Welsh had to show something in response, and they slowly grew into the game with their first full attacking set. Some lovely build up play saw the England defensive line stretched which saw William Lynch to squeeze into the corner. Ryan Griffiths missed the conversion.
The momentum seemed to have swung the Welsh way with a penalty awarded for a ball steal, Iwan Marsh showed some individual brute strength to crash over but unfortunately he failed to ground the ball properly, much of the displeasure of the home crowd.
Wales came again moments later with some slick handling, which saw Kieran Lewis catch a great pass to score out wide, Ryan Griffiths was successful with the conversion.
James McGurk was the next to score as Wales running hard and causing problems down England's right edge, although the pass seemed forward in the build up to the try, It stood with Wales hitting the front for the first time.
With opportunities coming for both sides, both teams failed to execute and Wales deservedly went into the sheds at half time with a 14-8 lead.
England started the second half like they did the first, Oliver Lewis scored a try after Wales couldn't deal with a high kick from the restart, Tyler Hart locked the scores to 14-14.
Wales then had an opportunity to reply but aggressive defence from England saw the man in red turn the ball over.
Jack Kellet picked the ball up and punish the home team and used all his upper body strength to power his way through.
Wales would never go away and some big hits from James McGurk forced into errors and they were soon back on the front foot, Jacob showed some nice footwork to score, Ryan Griffiths was successful with the conversion to lock the scores once more 20-20.
On 65 minutes their was nothing to choose from both of these sides, so undoubtedly it would take something special from someone to provide the killer blow.
A lovely set play from England saw Tyler Hart dummy his way through to score under the posts.
It flared up with three minutes to go with Wales being penalised for a late shot on England's Josh Milnes, a penalty was awarded which saw England play the game out.
