China mandating shore side power for new vessels on domestic trades

In the latest move by China to reduce pollution from ship emissions shoreside capability is being made mandatory for new domestic vessels built in two phases from the start of next year.

For China-flagged public service vessels, inland river vessels (excluding liquid cargo ships) and river-sea vessels being built on or after 1 January 2019, need to be equipped with a shore power system.

In a second phase China-flagged costal container ships, cruise ships, ro-pax vessel, 3,000-tonne class above passenger ships, 50,000-tonne class above dry bulk carriers, newly built on or after 1 January 2020, will also have to be equipped with a shore power system.

The Yangtze Delta ECA where ships have to burn fuel with 0.5% sulphur or less came into force on 1 October and the Pearl River Delta and Bohai-Rim Waters ECAs will be enforced from 1 January 2019.
