Each intern is given a mentor and assigned a project based on the company's needs and the interns’ interests and capabilities. For 10 weeks, interns will plan and execute deliverables which include a final presentation on their work at the conclusion of the internship. Students have the opportunity to shadow neurosurgeons and cardiologists, attend medical conferences, network with key leaders from the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, and improve their leadership, organization, and communication skills.

The summer internship program at the Jacobs Institute (JI) provides unique experiences and an innovative environment to support the professionalism, collaboration, leadership, and creativity of exceptional young people. It is an 10-week internship program.
Monday, June 3, 2024 - Friday, August 9, 2024
This is where science, art, medicine, engineering, research, social media, education, business, community outreach, law, entrepreneurship, and technology meld together. The JI fosters these collaborations to create the next generation of medical technology to treat heart attacks and strokes in Western New York and beyond as well as foster the next generation of leaders in healthcare. This is the place to be if you are looking for an internship experience unlike any other.
The JI is uniquely located between a state-of-the-art hospital and a world-class university research center. As such, we have access to first-rate physicians and hi-tech research and clinical facilities. The programs and services we offer to global medical device companies and smaller biotech startups allow interns to interact with physicians, sales representatives, engineers, business leaders, and entrepreneurs. As an active member of the Western New York community, we run programs and interact with Buffalo’s students to teach them about heart attacks and strokes.
Our internship coordinators hand-pick projects for our interns, based on our current needs and the interns’ interests and capabilities. Interns are expected to plan, develop, and execute deliverables on a predetermined timeline. As such, we expect interns to be leaders, self-motivated professionals, strong problem-solvers, and good communicators. Interns are expected to shadow at least one neurosurgeon and one cardiologist in the operating room during the program. Additionally, each intern is expected to attend at least one of the weekly Grand Rounds and Endovascular Conference led by University at Buffalo Neurosurgery. Interns will have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills by orienting and mentoring high school interns with an interest in medicine or engineering.
The JI also provides enrichment to interns through a Lunch and Learn series. Interns have lunch with various leaders from the Gates Vascular Institute, University at Buffalo, the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, and more. This is designed to showcase the diversity of professionals in Western New York. It exposes interns to Buffalo’s thought leaders and expands their professional network.
Lastly, interns present their final projects together near the end of the summer experience to an audience of Jacobs Institute staff and partners. In 2021, more than 50 Jacobs Institute friends attended the interns’ presentations. The audience consists of our key partners from UB, Kaleida Health, other Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus institutions, donors, community foundations, the interns’ family and friends, and so many more. This is a phenomenal opportunity for interns to showcase their hard work and have a tangible outcome of their summer’s efforts.

The Jacobs Institute seeks two summer interns with engineering backgrounds and desire to understand and improve vascular medicine. Interns will be mentored by the engineering team members in a highly collaborative clinical environment to develop technology needed to accelerate product development of innovative new technologies. Previous projects include developing 3D-printed anatomical models to represent specific disease states, automated test fixtures, or even specific processes to create a medical device prototype. You will have the opportunity to work with biomedical engineers, hospital surgeons, university researchers, and other interns on collaborative, impactful projects to showcase at the end of the summer. We are excited to find our next cohort of collaborative, passionate, creative, and technically savvy interns.
The Jacobs Institute seeks a summer intern with an education background to help us with another summer internship program that runs during the month of July. This program consists of 15 - 20 high school students who research a topic of their own choosing and share their findings in a final presentation. The students attend lectures by a neurosurgeon, watch and research TED Talks, participate in small networking events with leaders from the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, and more. The education intern would finish developing and preparing for this summer's program, run all aspects of the program day-to-day, and provide recommendations for future years.
The Jacobs Institute seeks a summer intern with a communications or marketing background and a passion for nonprofit mission building. This intern will help coordinate an online fundraising campaign and manage our social media pages. This will include the creation of new marketing materials, social media & philanthropic writing skills, and general communications support for public relations, social media, branding, recognition, special events, digital and other projects as they come up. The candidate needs good interpersonal skills, an analytical mind, and adaptable creativity.
