Tewksbury Park Hotel, Gloucestershire – health club and golf course impress at renovated resort

WHAT'S IT LIKE?
For a relaxing weekend in the country, Tewkesbury Park on the cusp of the Cotswolds is great.
The hotel has just had a £4million restoration, with beautiful new interiors overlooking views of the countryside and the on-site 18-hole parkland golf course.
Tewkesbury's charming streets and cosy pubs are a 15-minute walk away while Gloucester, worth a visit for the cathedral, is 15 minutes away by car.
ROOMS ANY GOOD?
The 93 rooms include nine historic suites.
Ours, the King Richard III, was huge, with comfy furniture, TVs in the bedroom and the bathroom plus a free-standing bath.
EAT THERE OR GRAB A PIZZA?
We had a wonderful three-course dinner at the hotel's restaurant.
We were lucky enough to be served by Joyce, 81, who has worked at Tewkesbury for 27 years.
I had goats cheese, then roast lamb, finishing with sticky toffee pudding.
The South African house red was as delicious as the food.
WHAT ELSE?
Set in 163 acres of parkland, Tewkesbury Park has squash and tennis courts as well as the golf course. The spa's Candle Wax Massage nearly sent me to sleep and the leisure club's outdoor hot tub was equally relaxing.
SO YOU'D GO BACK?
Yes. The location is beautiful and the renovation makes for a high-end but cosy stay.
