UMaine Athletics Mourns the Passing of Manch Wheeler '62

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine athletics department was saddened to learn of the passing of former Black Bear Football player, and University of Maine Sports Hall of Famer, Manchester 'Manch' Wheeler '62.

"The University of Maine football team extends our most sincere condolences to the family and friends of Manch Wheeler," said current UMaine head coach, Joe Harasymiak. "Manch was a tremendous player and ambassador to our football family. His presence at Alfond Stadium will be sorely missed."

Wheeler had an impressive career at the University of Maine in many statistical categories. During his tenure he served as captain, led the team in passing in 1959, 1960 and 1961, led the defense in interceptions in 1960 and 1961, led the team in punting in 1960, was second in scoring in 1960 and third in rushing yardage in 1961. He was selected to the All-Conference teams for both the Maine State Conference and the Yankee Conference in 1961. In addition, Wheeler was the named the 1961 Harold Westerman Most Valuable Player for the Black Bears. Following his career at Maine he played one season with the Buffalo Bills.

In 1961, Wheeler guided Maine to an undefeated season as the Black Bears put together an 8-0-1 mark, ending the season as the Yankee Conference champions with a perfect 5-0 mark in league play.
