There are books that make you feel, then there are books that become one with your soul, your being, and Chasing Ellie is just that! Paige P. Horne takes us, the reader and characters, on a profound and beautiful journey through the emotional battles of life and love in this heart wrenching yet soul soothing narrative experience.
'When I was nine years old, my daddy told me you'll only find one true love in this life. It's the rarest and truest love there is, Little Miss. You find it and you never let it go.'
Wild, carefree, and adventurous, just like her mama was, Ellie Williams is a free spirit and easy going in all things life except where her heart and love is involved. Chasing Ellie spans over a decade, following her from adolescence to watching her bloom into a beautiful and intelligent adult. Life hasn't been a walk in the park for her. Plagued by the reputation of the girl who's mother killed herself, watching her father struggle to move on, living with only half his heart intact, she's learned to protect hers. Children see more and are more intuitive than people are aware, thus in some shape and form, plays a part in molding who they are, what they want to be and do in life.
'I don't want to fall in love. It cripples you. I've seen it happen.'
At times I became frustrated with Ellie's character. I just wanted to shake her and tell her to open up her mind, her heart, to just give in to the lure of love. Embrace it! Feel it! Live it! Love... it's such a fickle bastard at times. BUT at the same time I understood her hesitation, fears, and longing to cave to it all. Not only did she have her daddy wrapped around her finger, she had me too.
She's been his since the first moment he laid eyes on her. Rough around the edges, Tommy Kingsley is definitely not your typical boy next door. He's had a hard childhood, and growing up on the south-side of Chicago isn't a walk in the park. So different, yet so alike. I can see why Ellie and Tommy are drawn to each other. They truly are each others yin/yang, the calm in each others perfect storm. He wants more than friendship while she's paralyzed in fear of their relationship changing, that it couldn't go back to what it was if they took that next step, a jump in faith.
'Sometimes life is tough, and other times you make it that way by crappy choices. I get bored easy so I can't commit like Tommy. I'm a liar too because committing is not my problem. Love is. Getting too close is. The fear of someone owning my heart and crushing it is.'
My love for Tommy Kingsley wasn't immediate, he slowly grew on my throughout the story. His perseverance, strength, and will to better himself, to be worthy of Ellie's heart and trust for life set my heart ablaze. He really is book boyfriend material!
'He's what my dreams are made of. He's the sweetest thing that ever happened to me and the only person who can make me feel this way. Alive and so loved.'
'People say time is the only thing that can heal a broken heart, but I don't know if that's true. I think sometimes a heart just stays broken.'
'I never wanted to find that kind of love, and I swore every time I helped the man with a broken heart off the old hardwood, I'd never look.'
