Johannesburg - The ANC Gauteng will conduct its own investigation into the arrest of Sedibeng mayor Mahole Simon Mofokeng, it said on Thursday.

“The ANC Gauteng has seen and noted all media reports on the alleged arrest of the Sedibeng executive mayor Mahole Simon Mofokeng, as a result of an alleged drunken driving accident,” it said in a statement.

“The ANC intends on conducting its own investigations, and if there is any truth to the allegations, we will... refer the matter to the (ANC's) integrity committee to handle and deal with all its consequences.”

Mofokeng was arrested on Tuesday night for alleged drunk driving after he had a minor car crash while leaving a Vanderbijlpark hotel.

Police spokesman Brigadier Neville Malila said a sample of Mofokeng's blood was taken.

“He was released on Wednesday morning (on) R1000 bail. He spent Tuesday evening in police cells. The case had been postponed until September 5.”

The African National Congress said while it viewed the allegation in a serious light, the matter was with the police.

It encouraged everyone to allow the law to take its course, and cautioned that Mofokeng should not be judged until the investigations were concluded.

Andries Mapetla, a director in Mofokeng's office, confirmed the crash.

“Yes it is true that he was involved in a motor car accident, and as best as it is understood, it was just a minor accident.”

He said he could not comment further as he had not spoken to the mayor himself. - Sapa
