Auburn softball third baseman Kasey Cooper misses first start in 2 years after pregame injury

Auburn softball All-American third baseman Kasey Cooper was out of the starting lineup Wednesday night due to a pregame injury, but came in late to pinch hit.

Cooper, a senior, was hit in the face by a ground ball during pregame warmups before No. 7 Auburn played Kennesaw State at Jane B. Moore Field.

Cooper, who last missed a game against Texas A&M on April 11, 2015 and started 135 straight games, came in to pinch hit for Victoria Draper in the bottom of the sixth and hit a sacrifice fly.

"We'll have to assess," Auburn coach Clint Myers said. "We got (Thursday). I'm not worried about her missing practice but (the doctor) says that we'll get in checked out in the morning and see where we stand. No indication anything's broke; the ball just kind of popped up on her.

"It's the face so we always take precaution. She kept saying, 'coach I can hit, I can hit, I can hit,' so in that situation we put her in."

Auburn moved Kendall Veach to third from first base in place of Cooper, who is hitting .300 with seven home runs and 34 RBI, and started Jenna Abbott at first base.

Draper led off for the first time this season and Carlee Wallace moved down a spot to second, where Cooper had been hitting.
