Brown Bag Lunch Talk at the Portland Art Museum

Every third Wednesday of the month, the Photography Council hosts a Brown Bag Lunch Talk at the Portland Art Museum. I’m delighted to be doing the presentation this month on Wednesday, April 19, 2017, from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. The event is free to the public and is sponsored by the Portland Art Museum Photography Council with major support provided by Pro Photo Supply.

My talk and slideshow, entitled Candid Photography, will describe the development and evolution of my artistic vision and method for the candid photography of people in public spaces around the globe. Whether documenting routine activities or special celebrations, my photos provide a compelling glimpse of human emotions, interactions, and connections, and they open a window to the world that surrounds us here and now.

BWP Showcase Winner and Exhibition

I’m honored that my project Holy Week in Guatemala was selected as a winner in the 2016 BWP Showcase Competition, sponsored by Black+White Photography magazine and theprintspace, London, UK.

The exhibition will be on display from April 7 through April 25, 2017, at theprintspace, 74 Kingsland Road, London, UK, Mon - Fri from 9am – 7pm. Thanks to Elizabeth Roberts, Mark Bentley and Anna Evans from Black+White Photography magazine for all they did, and to theprintspace for expertly preparing nine prints for the exhibition from my digital files.

2017 Blue Sky Gallery Pacific Northwest Viewing Drawers

Ten prints from my series Brief Encounters will be on display in the 2017 Pacific Northwest Photography Viewing Drawers at the Blue Sky Gallery.

It's difficult for me to click the shutter on my camera unless the image contains a person. Although most of my photos involve candid moments that I capture without directly engaging my subjects, occasionally I feel compelled to create a portrait of someone I meet during my travels. These brief encounters are generally no more than an initial acknowledgement of one another, a point to my camera, a nod of approval, and one or two quick snaps before we continue along our separate paths. This series includes some of my favorite impromptu portraits.

The exhibition was juried by Mitra Abbaspour, an independent curator and scholar based in New York, and it will run from April 6, 2017 through March 31, 2018.

Metro Exhibition at Blue Sky Gallery

Despite the chilly temperatures and predictions of an impending freezing-rain storm, almost five hundred people stopped by the opening night reception of my exhibition Metro: Scenes from an Urban Stage at the Blue Sky Gallery on January 5. The show includes over thirty images from Metro project which documents people interacting with one another in mass transit systems on four continents.

The exhibition culminated with my talk and slideshow presentation on January 28. Thanks to all who came to the exhibition and talk, and to everyone at the Blue Sky Gallery for make the month-long exhibition such a wonderful experience.

Singular/Signature Exhibition at The Center for Fine Art Photography

My photo A Sabbath Prayer was selected by juror Alyssa Coppelman for the Singular/Signature Exhibition at the Center for Fine Art Photography.  This image is from my series The New Promised Land which documents Los Israelitas, an evangelical sect living along the banks of the Amazon River. This project was featured in LensWork #117. The Exhibition is at the Center for Fine Art Photography from March 3 – April 1, 2017.
