Just when you thought Weeds was cashed, the Emmy Award-winning dark comedy is being relit. Mary-Louise Parker, who played suburban drug dealer Nancy Botwin in the long-running Showtime series, is reportedly attached to the new project as a star and an executive producer, TVLine’s sister publication Variety reports. The new series would pick up 10 years after Weeds originally ended.
Victoria Morrow, who wrote and co-EP’d the original series, is expected to write and executive-produce the revival. Series creator Jenji Kohan, however, is not yet attached.
Weeds, which ran for eight seasons from 2005 to 2012, also starred Elizabeth Perkins, Justin Kirk, Tonye Patano, Romany Malco, Hunter Parrish, Alexander Gould, Andy Milder, Allie Grant and Kevin Nealon. It’s unclear at this time which other original cast members might join Parker in Lionsgate Television’s potential revival.
“As excited as we are about our new series, I want to remind everyone that ‘the old is also new,’ and we’re pleased to be bringing two of the most acclaimed shows in television history, Mad Men and Weeds, to the global syndication marketplace next year,” Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer said in a statement. “We will be launching the marketing campaign for Mad Men, winner of 16 Emmys and five Golden Globes during its eight-year run, later this month. And we’re thrilled to be back in business with series star and producer Mary-Louise Parker on what we’re calling Weeds 4.20, already in active development at Starz, as we prepare a comprehensive and integrated rollout for one of television’s most beloved properties.”

Smokin’! I’ll take a toke. (Couldn’t resist.)
10 years later? The finale was already 10-12 years later.
And without Jenji Kohan this is useless.
I was assuming this meant it would pick up where the flashforward finale left off rather than flashing forward another ten years.
Think again. It’s not unprecedented. Will And Grace, Roseanne and Mad About You all had flash-forward endings which they had to take back upon revival. Though Roseanne’s was more of a….”the entire show was a book I was writing” and required a total retcon.
All ibcan say ia then sont watch it at all. We will enjoy it without you. Just dont watch it
No.
I loved Weeds. I know some have issues with the later seasons, but I loved it all the way through. I’d definitely watch more. And coincidentally I was thinking about getting rid of my Starz subscription after Power ended, but with this series coming up I may just have to keep it.
Agreed
I stopped watching after the whole Mexican border and cartel murder thing, but it might be interesting to see Nancy now running a dispensary or something
It went way downhill when they left Agrestic, really have no interest in this revival
I completely agree with you, the only thing I liked was the one line Nancy had when she said “Shane, get Mommy the pillow”, guess that shows I’m a little twisted but it went so far downhill after they left Agrestic that they should’ve cancelled it.
Charmed, Gossip Girl, Weeds–enough reviving and rebooting shows that were on television just a decade ago. Looks like there really is a brain drain in Hollywood when it comes to broadcast and cable television.
I don’t think it has to do with a lack of ideas. It’s more that name titles get peoples attention. Today there’s more competition when it comes to TV shows than ever before. In order to stand out you have to do something that grabs eyeballs. Also, even if these shows fail, if it still helps bring more eyes to their network (for future series) it’s a win for them.
I kinda fell off the show into the later seasons. But I welcome it back to see if it can recapture some of what made it a hit in thr first place.
What a treat to have Mary Louise Parker back on the tube.
This reminded me of how much I loved the Poster Ad work for each season of the show.
This is the perfect time to bring back Weeds! I hope they do the same thing that Will and Grace did, and just forget that the final episode existed. I hated the way it ended, with the men making Nancy sell her successful, legal cannabis business. Show us what she can do as a corporate CEO with a semi-legal product in an unfriendly world while dealing with issues like climate change affecting her crops and migrant workers being stopped at the border wall.
Most weed sold in stores isn’t grown outside for security reasons so climate change wouldn’t play a role.
It would when the lights and heat go out for days at a time. Blackouts happen in most parts of the country due to storms or fire risk.
Nancy has already had to deal with fire and border issues with her illegal business. Fire affects everything when it sweeps through an area. So does a hurricane or typhoon. Those issues are only worsening with time. The cannabis industry is in a unique legal situation right now, with some states sanctioning it but federal laws still in place. I’d love to see the show address those issues.
Why?
O.M.G. HEILYA OR HELL YEAH BRING WEEDS BACK, LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!!!!!!!!
Oh dear. It was nearly unwatchable after season 3… Not expecting much from this.
Lmao they ran this show into the ground. Why bring back something so soon when most of its fans couldn’t even stand it by the end?
Please don’t.
No, no, no! Stop rebooting shows. Weeds was perfect. You do not mess with perfection and expect it to be perfect the second time around. How about these people in Hollywood using their creativity and come up with something new.
No thanks…That show was out of gas at the end. And didn’t it show a big time jump forward in the finale?
Loved that show. I mean, how many messes could she get into and then totally get herself out of? can’t wait!
I am very excited to hear this!
Don’t screw it up! Get everyone together and make it happen!
Agreed. No Jenji, no interest. Like Gilmore Girls without the Palladinos.
I can’t wait! Hope all of the cast will be part of this!
I can’t wait for weeds to come back. I hope it is available on Hulu, Netflix and amazon as well. Either way I look forward to seeing this show come back.
Let’s just make sure they go back to Agrestic. After they left it went downhill.
Can’t wait for this. I hope that more of the original cast comes back. There is so much more Botwin Family story lines to be told.
Wait… Did he say they are bringing Mad Men back as well?? Or that Mad Men reruns will simply be airing on Starz?
