APRIL 22ND: THE MARCH FOR SCIENCE

The Field Museum recently announced our official participation in the March for Science, taking place in Washington D.C., Chicago, and in sister cities all across the globe (find one near you)! Here at The Brain Scoop we’re all about supporting and celebrating science- so I asked a few museum staff, volunteers and patrons if they’d share what science means to them for a video. It’s heartwarming <3.

Learn more at the MarchForScience.com, and for details on the March for Science in Chicago, check out sciencemarchchicago.org. In Chicago, the March is starting on S. Columbus Drive, and ending at a Science Expo happening on Museum campus, which is RAD - and also I'm the keynote speaker for the rally starting at 10am!  So if you’re local, come to the stage on S. Columbus Dr., just South of E. Jackson Dr. to show your support. I'd appreciate it with my whole entire circulatory system.

UPCOMING VIDEOS

We’ve been working hard! In a few weeks we’ll post our next video- it’s all about insect nests. We’re calling it ‘Insect Cribs,’ as an ode to the fantastic, 17-season run of MTV Cribs, a show that featured tours of celebrity homes. But unlike MTV Cribs our episode has far fewer sports cars and a lot more bees, so basically it’s more awesome.

Our editor Brandon made a cool thumbnail for it that I can’t stop looking at:

Most of our time over the last few months has been spent on a longer-than-usual video that incorporates multiple interviews, an American history lesson, skinning a few mammals (!), and a whole lot of information. It’s big. Keep an eye on your sub box or an email from us when it’s up!

Oh, and next month we're going to the World Taxidermy Championships in Peoria, Illinois and it's a total dream come true! but more on that later.

NERDCON: NERDFIGHTERIA

We traveled to Boston at the end of February to celebrate Hank and John Green’s 10 years on YouTube (WHAAAT! I was graduating high school 10 years ago...), and hang out with Nerdfighters from all over! It was a blast. We laughed, we cried, we made poop jokes. ← I’m an adult, I swear. Thanks to Emma Brown for this ^ photo!

I had a lot of favorite moments at NC:NF -- meeting a ton of energetic nerdfighters was at the top! So thanks to everyone who came out. <3

PODCAST

We’re making a podcast! I’m so excited about this. The biggest hurdle is, honestly, getting a good name (seriously… if you’ve ever had to come up with a unique, creatives name that isn’t already taken… you know my struggle.)
We’re thinking, 25-30 minute episodes that fall into one of three segments:

YOU HAVE A COOL JOB
Interviewing people around the building who do COOL STUFF! There are so many interesting jobs and roles in a natural history museum - from exhibitions, to libraries and collections - and a lot of those folks have great stories to tell.

THAT’S PRETTY NEAT!
A segment where we talk about stuff that makes us say: hey! That’s pretty neat!

I’VE MADE A HUGE MISTAKE
Mishaps in the lab, and in the field -- and how you saved the day (and the data)! This one will feature stories from lots of scientists. Hey, nobody is perfect.

Okay. I think that’s everything for now. Stay tuned, pals!
