So he decided to share an adorable snap of the pair, who have been wed for 40 years, to show racists will never defeat them.

In the picture, taken at the Queen's garden party in the summer, John is decked out in a kilt while Justina smiles alongside him in traditional African dress bursting with colour.

And he vowed to always stand tall and educate people in the face of racism.

Posting on Twitter, the Glasgow scholar said: "I thought I would share.

"We've had disapproving looks, 'we are full', 'is that your wife' and many more actions questioning our relationship over the last 40+ yrs.

"We haven't wavered.

"The best way of fighting racism is living your life, standing tall and educating."

And social media has erupted in support of the Scots scholar, with the tweet racking up 18,000 retweets and 54,000 likes.

Andrew Hursthouse said: "Fantastic what lovely words that I fully support."

Bryan Upfield added: "I just thought 'what a lovely looking couple'.

"So sorry we all have to live in a world full of the un elightened, and put up with ignorance.

"Well done for stepping up and highlighting the issue."

And John Thain wrote: "Fabulous photo and thank you for sharing it.

"We can but hope that as humanity develops so does the ability to truly live together."

Other loved-up couples shared pictures of themselves to show Professor Struthers and Justina, 65, are not alone in their struggle for diversity to be accepted.

Prof Struthers was appointed Honorary Consul for Ethiopia in Scotland two years ago.

An academic and economist with over 30 years experience in universities in the UK and Africa, he has also acted as director of a leading Scottish Chamber of Commerce and is a current member of the Westminster Africa Business Group in London.
