From New York Times bestselling author Kim Karr comes a brand new standalone in the Connections Series.

We each had a plan.
We knew what we were doing.
Until love got in our way.

Him:
The first time I laid eyes on Gemma Hart, she belonged to another man. He literally owned her. I hated the very thought.
I wanted her to be mine.

Even though I knew I shouldn't, I couldn't help but watch the way she swayed her hips when she walked in my direction, raise a brow when she pretended not to notice me, get excited over the way her skin prickled whenever she got close.
I turned her on.

Thinking about her like that wasn't part of the plan. Getting addicted to the way she arched beneath me wasn't part of the plan. Caring about what happens to her was definitely not part of the plan.
Yet I do.

Now my plan has to be altered. I can't allow her to get caught in the crossfire. She has to leave, but she insists on staying. She has a secret. A reason she allows herself to belong to that obnoxious prick. She won't tell me what she's hiding unless I tell her why I need to know.
I can't do that.

There's another way to get what I want--a little game of cat and mouse. And I'm an excellent hunter. Her gone is for the best.
Or that's what I keep telling myself.

Her:
The first time Caleb Holt strode into the room I was certain I knew his type. A man too gorgeous for his own good, he was sexy, brooding, and so full of himself, I thought he could easily be fooled.
I was wrong.

Those brilliant green eyes followed me everywhere. I swore he could see into my soul, read my determination, uncover my secrets with just one glance.
It worries me.

I should have stayed away from him, but I couldn't fight the searing desire that flowed through my veins and the burning passion that coated my skin.
I'll try harder.

Before him, I had a plan to get back what was taken from me. The cost was irrelevant. Now I'm not sure I can sell my soul to the devil because I fear it belongs to him. The problem is he has a plan of his own, and I can't risk his plan taking priority over mine.
So game on.

Intriguing read

I knew Caleb's story would be intense because of what happened with Ben from previous books. I didn't expect the depths he had to go to. It was intriguing and mysterious.
Gemma was his perfect match and I was so into their story that I wanted more. Absolutely cannot wait for Bent. The sneak peek at the end has me anxious and worried for Dahlia.

As this one started I liked Gemma, she was spunky and I liked how she hid the guy. It was only when the book went forward in time years that I actively disliked Gemma. Sure she wasn't in the situation by her own accord, but it still bothered me. She seemed to take all the crap that was dished out to her. I finally gave up around the 40% mark, I didn't care that Gemma and Caleb were probably after the same thing, this one just wasn't for me.

For anyone who has read the Connections series, Caleb Holt has been a character that has always deserved his own story. And if you have not read any others, the author has you covered and fills in any pertinent details so this can be a standalone story.

Caleb...He's been undercover for years trying to take down a drug cartel. He's a ghost and focused on his objective. He's broody, resentful, burnt out, and a loner. In the past he was forced to do something that he was not proud of and still feels guilty for, but he had to choose between duty and family. Now his goal is in his sights and he is closing in on the last few people to be done with the whole situation.

Caleb meets Gemma several times and each time she surprises him. Her past irrevocably changed the direction of her life. Now she feels trapped and living in a nightmare that just seems to continue on and on. She has her own goals and plan.

When they are brought together, it is like a game of cat and mouse with them trying to figure out who is playing who and what kind of hidden agendas exist. It is a culmination of secrets, lies, omissions, games, cover ups, suspense, danger, and intrigue. This is a romantic suspense with twists and surprises mixed with a love story between two lonely, hopeless, and damaged individuals. Their pasts and presents are colliding and their mistakes seems to follow them. But with all of that swirling around them, it makes them truly feel alive again...but can Caleb keep them that way while trying to achieve their personal objectives. And do their personal goals conflict with the other's?

Fans of the series will enjoy some cameos and reminders from past installments, but Caleb and Gemma's story is truly their own. It has a very unique premise and set of circumstances affecting the main characters. I am looking forward to Bent that will focus on River and Dahlia and bring back more of these characters I love including Caleb.

I received this book for free from the author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
