ELIZABETH -- Kansas City Chiefs linebacker and former Rutgers football star Khaseem Greene on Tuesday was indicted in connection with a shooting outside an Elizabeth nightclub last December.
Surveillance video shows Greene, 28, handing a gun to another man outside Allstar Night Club on Dec. 3, shortly before that man fired the gun into a crowd of people, according to court records. It was unclear whether anyone was injured.
The co-defendant, Jason C. Sanders, was arrested Dec. 30 and gave a voluntary statement admitting to the shooting and saying Greene had handed him the gun, the court records state.
The Chiefs posted on Twitter on Tuesday that they had put Greene on waivers, releasing him and making him available to any team that might want to sign him.
Greene and Sanders are charged with unlawful possession of a weapon in connection with the shooting in the city's Elizabethport neighborhood.
Sanders is also charged with possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, second-degree aggravated assault and third-degree aggravated assault.
Greene, an Elizabeth native, was initially charged on Jan. 4, court records state.
Greene did not immediately respond to a phone call seeking comment on the indictment. His lawyer, Hassen Abdellah, declined to comment.
Greene was a two-time Big East Defensive Player of the Year (2011-12) who co-captained the Rutgers team that won a share of the 2012 Big East title.
Recruited by former coach Greg Schiano out of Elizabeth High School, Greene first attended Avon Old Farms prep school in Connecticut for one year. He spent five years at Rutgers -- two playing safety and two playing linebacker -- before being picked in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears.
Greene's NFL career flamed out quickly, as he was cut by the Bears after playing in 25 games over two seasons.
He failed to earn the full reported value of his four-year, $2.59 million contract.
Though Greene hasn't played in a regular-season game since 2014, he since has bounced around the rosters of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Detroit Lions and was signed in January to a futures contract by the Kansas City Chiefs, allowing him an offseason opportunity to compete for a roster spot in summer training camp.
Greene, who has earned $1.42 million in his NFL career, according to spotrac.com, ranks fourth all-time at Rutgers with 387 career tackles.
Greene wore uniform No. 52 with the Bears as a tribute to his close friend and former Rutgers teammate Eric LeGrand, the inspirational voice of spinal cord injury research and awareness who was paralyzed playing for the Scarlet Knights in 2010. He also wore No. 52 to honor LeGrand once during his Rutgers career.
Sanders could not immediately be reached by phone, and it was unclear Tuesday afternoon whether he had retained a lawyer.
