The Mist: Behold the jaw-dropping new trailer for the Stephen King TV series

Blood, insects, and monsters galore venture out of the shadows in Spike TV's new adaptation

We don’t yet know what lives out in The Mist — but we see what dies in it.

Spike TV’s adaptation of the Stephen King story debuts on June 22, but today, EW premieres a new trailer showing some of the consequences for those who find themselves trapped outdoors when this supernatural fog rolls over the town.

The series adds entirely new characters to King’s premise. At the center is the Copeland family — Eve (played by Alyssa Sutherland of Vikings), who’s a school teacher with a long, gossip-filled history in town; husband Kevin (Morgan Spector, from Person of Interest), a live-and-let-live type whose decency is challenged when the town goes into lockdown; and daughter Alex (Gus Birney,) a rebellious kid who somehow (as we learn in this video) survives a journey through the mist.

The show also focuses on Nathalie Raven (Six Feet Under’s Frances Conroy), who professes to have a kind of spiritual connection to nature that may help explain whatever is out there; and Gus Redman (The Wire’s Isiah Whitlock Jr.), a mall manager whose authoritarian streak is activated by the crisis.

EW had a chance to ask just a few question of series creator and executive producer Christian Torpe about the new trailer’s unsettling moments:

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: I need to ask about the great shock of that jawless woman. It looks like the show isn’t just going to rely on hazy monsters in the fog. Why is it important for this show to have guts (both metaphorically and literally?)

CHRISTIAN TORPE:

“We didn’t want it to be a monster show, we wanted it to be a show about fear and how people react when they are afraid. In order to do that, we obviously need to scare the characters once in a while…”

The flying creatures coming out of the man’s mouth… Could you hint at what we’re seeing there? Does The Mist turn humans into a kind of host for the creatures that inhabit it?
They are moths and they will come to play a bigger part in Nathalie’s character arc, playing into her connection with nature and what she believes is happening.

Any clues about that giant black shape Alex faces at the end? I imagine you want to keep this as one of the mysteries of the show, but is there anything you can say to tease what we’re seeing?
As you will see, the mist contains many different things. This is one of them. But how and why it is there, you will have to wait and see.

Finally, Alex is said to be the only survivor to have navigated the mist. Is her survival a mystery to her, too? Or does she know something the others don’t?

You will have to tune in find out…

The Mist premieres on Spike on Thursday, June 22 at 10 p.m.
