In this edition of the hotstove, we share our thoughts on Dallas' acquisition of Ben Bishop and the six-year extension that followed.

Ben Bishop is a pretty good goaltender but I don't like this move at all.
Over the last three seasons, Bishop's 5v5 save percentage (.925) is .001 higher than Kari Lehtonen's 5v5 save percentage last year (.924) so the Stars really aren't getting as much of an upgrade as they think. Bishop is also on the wrong side of 30, has a bit of an injury history, and is not a guy I'd want to commit six years to.
I'm sure he'll do fine, especially under Ken Hitchcock, but the Stars overpaid to get a guy with name value and I don't think that's the way to go.

Succinctly, I like the cap hit. I like the move as part and parcel of bringing Ken Hitchcock in to also demand more structure and execution defensively. What I don't like, even a little, is the six-year term, the inflexibility of six years of a full NMC with a modified no-trade in the last three seasons even if he did waive the NMC. I also don't like the fact they temporarily have three very expensive goalie and no clear cut route for losing a contract short of a buyout of Lehtonen or Niemi that will incur a cap hit for two seasons whereas they'd be free and clear if kept and become UFAs in a year.
