2019 FOOTBALL ALL-GSC TEAMS

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Gulf South Conference has announced the 2019 football all-conference awards, as voted on by the league’s coaches. Valdosta State’s Rogan Wells was named GSC Offensive Player of the Year, and North Greenville’s Chauncy Haney was named GSC Defensive Player of the Year. Freshman awards were won by West Florida’s Austin Reed, who was named GSC Offensive Freshman of the Year, and Shorter’s Xavier Robinson, who was named GSC Defensive Freshman of the Year. Gary Goff of Valdosta State and John Bland of Mississippi College were named GSC Co-Coaches of the Year.

Wells, the Blazers’ redshirt junior quarterback, led them to an undefeated regular season and a second straight GSC Championship. He’s thrown for 2,315 yards and 17 touchdowns, and he has a league-leading passer rating of 163.2. Wells also leads the GSC with a 71.2% completion percentage and is third in rushing with 680 yards.  The 2018 Harlon Hill Trophy finalist has now been named GSC Offensive Player of the Year twice in his career. He is only the eighth player in league history to win the award back-to-back years.

Haney led the GSC in tackles for loss (15.0) and sacks (9.5). He was fourth in the conference in total tackles with 78 tackles. The senior defensive lineman led a North Greenville defense that gave up only 22.4 points per game, which was a good enough for third in the league. He is the first player from North Greenville to win a major yearly award from the GSC.

Reed has had an excellent debut campaign for West Florida. He led the conference with 2,444 passing yards and 24 touchdown passes. Reed is second in the conference with a 151.2 passer rating, and he will lead the Argonauts into a playoff showdown with Wingate this Saturday. He is the second player in program history to be name GSC Offensive Freshman of the Year (Mike Beaudry, 2017).

Robinson, an inside linebacker, led the Hawks with 79 tackles, which put him third in the GSC. Robinson also had 8.5 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, and a forced fumble. His best outing came against West Georgia, where he racked up 13 sacks, 3.0 tackles for loss, and a sack. He is the first Shorter football player to win a yearly award from the GSC since Jordan Shaw was named Defensive Player of the Year in 2014.

Goff has kept ball rolling at Valdosta State in his first season in charge. The undefeated Blazers have been ranked #1 nationally throughout the entire season and are the top seed in Super Region Two. They have also reeled off a GSC record 25 straight victories. Goff’s Blazers earned 14 all-conference selections this season.

Bland’s Choctaws went undefeated at home and defeated in-state rival Delta State for the first time since 1993. The Choctaws’ five wins are program’s highest since 2009, and their four GSC victories are their most since rejoining the conference in 2014. MC earned seven all-conference selections this season.
