What’s the Magic Word for Sales?

Marketing and sales heavily rely on psychology in order to influence consumers’ decisions. The human mind is one of the most complex and sophisticated machines and yet it’s tricked in no time. People can be easily manipulated and hoodwinked, and it’s no secret that marketers use numerous methods of luring people into buying their products. Words are one of the most powerful tools in this game. Here are several simple words that are an open sesame to boosting your conversion rates.

You

It all goes back to Narcissus and his weird obsession with his own reflection. People are egocentric, no matter how hard we try to sugarcoat it. This perhaps explains why almost everyone loves hearing (or reading) their own name. This strategy should be used for emails as it adds a very personal touch and makes your prospects feel as if you were addressing them personally. However, “You” is that magic word that should be used as frequently as possible in copies, ads, and product descriptions. It’s incredibly persuasive and influential. If you want to produce a copy that people can relate to, you’d better make it jam-packed with “you's”. Put your prospects in the spotlight and boost your sales by boosting their ego.

Free

Who doesn’t like freebies? Yes, people sometimes equate free stuff with items of poor quality, but never underestimate the power of getting something without having to pay for it. The very fact that they’re free makes those products seem more valuable. Even finding coins on the street can make people happy. Or let’s put it this way: just remember the last conference you attended and the people crowding around the buffet stuffing their faces with food just because it was free. Search results on the internet reveal that people also Google entries such as free books, free music or free games. One of the best options for benefiting from this psychological quirk is free shipping. According to Amazon, buyers are even willing to spend more money on their orders, providing that they get free shipping. If you want to increase your conversion rate, “free” is the word you’re looking for.

New

Everybody wants “this year’s model”, you can be sure of that. The latest products are being released on a daily basis, and people simply love it when they hear that something is powered by the cutting-edge technology. This little word evokes a sense of adventure and it’s immensely appealing to consumers as they want something exciting. The same goes for early access. It offers exclusivity and the idea of belonging to a small and selected group of people who got the opportunity to be the first ones to try out a new product or service. “New” is a real attention-grabber, so using it on your landing page, website and ads will definitely increase your conversion rates.
