Opening Round 2018 Bounce Life Super Sevens Series Last Sunday over 3500 people flocked to the sun drenched Haberden, home of Bury St Edmunds Rugby Club for the first round of the 2018 Bounce Life Super Sevens Series. The twelve core teams were joined by four guest sides including Premiership heavyweights Saracens and all sixteen teams produced an outstanding level of 7s throughout the day. The pool rounds threw up a few surprises and a number of very close games with only Saracens, British Army and Samurai going through to the knockout stages unbeaten, however Commonwealth and World Cup 7s qualifiers Jamaica and Esher Lions had a tough day at the office. The quarter finals saw last year’s series runners-up Rambling Jesters fall to Guildford Bears who joined the still unbeaten trio in the semi-finals. New comers BLK Hurricanes and regulars Apache and Wailers also fell at this stage. Meanwhile in the Plate competition guest side Oxfam Crusaders and Scimitar Storm moved through to the final with strong wins over the Irish IQ Rugby and England Students. The charity representatives went on to win the close fought Plate final 19 – 15. Samurai moved through to the final with a 33 -12 win over Guildford Bears whilst the British Army ran Saracens close losing 29-24 after almost stealing the win in the dying moments of the game. With the final throwing last year’s series winners up against the Premiership side the crowd who had enjoyed over 8 hours of top class 7s in the sunshine settled down for what promised to be a clash of the titans. Unfortunately, the fitness and squad familiarity of the Saracens team enabled them to starve Samurai of possession and they ran out comfortable winners 40 – 0 with another performance of pace and power. The series now moves on to London Irish, Hazelwood on Saturday June 2nd before heading North to Chester on Saturday 16th June before the Grand Final back in West London at Ealing Trailfinders in conjunction with the RFU’s 24/7 Series.
