Bulls Brothers Make History From playing beach footy to playing in the Canberra Raiders Cup, Dale Cooper-Shields, 25, and his two brothers Jese Smith-Shields, 19, and Harley Smith-Shields, 17, made history when they became the first set of three brothers to play First Grade for the Gungahlin Bulls. Having come through the junior ranks at the North Canberra Bears, the three brothers played together for the first time when Harley, having finished a successful season with the Canberra Raiders SG Ball side, was called up to play against the Yass Magpies. “It was basically a dream come true,” Harley said. “I’ve thought about it since we were all young and playing footy together. I didn’t think I’d see the day happen. It was pretty surreal.” For Dale, the moment had extra significance as he returned to rugby league in the hope that he would get to play with his two younger brothers. Having stopped playing rugby league to focus on his career as a ceramic tiler, Dale started playing again with the goal of playing alongside Jese last year but he had to put those plans on hold. “I coached Jese two years ago and then I got the itch to play the year afterwards because I wanted to play alongside the boys,” Dale said. “Unfortunately, Jese had a bad back injury which put him out of action for a year so I couldn’t play with him.” However, Dale did manage to play alongside Jese early this season before the youngest brother, Harley, also managed to break into first grade. “[It meant] that I was going to be the smallest brother on the field,” Dale said. “Going from the oldest to the smallest was a bit of a bummer but I knew they would look after me no matter what.” “It was quite the experience [playing with Jese and Harley]. It’s something you look forward to doing when you are playing beach footy together when you are young and you aspire to do that together in a higher competition.” However, their father Braden was unable to see the boys run out together for the first time due carrying out a promise to his wife Vesna.

“Harley actually said that he may be playing first grade with Jese and Dale,” Braden said. “There were two emotions for me, pride – I was absolutely ecstatic for them – but the other one was when I realised that I was on holidays overseas with my wife which I had been promising her for eight years.” “My wife was very good about it she said we could fly back early but there was just no way shape or form that we were going to be able to make it.” “Actually my oldest son (Dale) sent me the link to Bar TV and I actually watched the replay in Rome Airport and I was screaming and shouting as if I was there!” Although the Bulls were defeated by an impressive Yass Magpies outfit on that occasion, the boys were picked once again to face the Woden Valley Rams. With their father there watching them, all three brothers played impressive roles in their teams win with Harley scoring a try and Jese setting up a try for Dale. “It was fabulous [to see them play],” Braden said. “I was grinning from ear to ear. I was proud as punch, my chest was poked out and I was strutting around.” Harley was also thrilled to have his dad there watching them play. “It felt surreal,” Harley said. “It just felt like we were back on the beach playing footy together.”

Austbrokers Canberra Raiders Cup Round 9 Wrap Queanbeyan Kangaroos 64 (Tries: J Dent 2, N Ngere 2, B Cronan, T Whiley, J Simbiken, B Crisp, J Essex, A Gorrell, J Ayers; Goals: Crisp 10 ) d West Belconnen Warriors 18 (Tries: C Thorley 2, C Brebner; Goals: A McDonald, C Brebner, C Thorley) In a rematch of last year’s grand final the Queanbeyan Kangaroos brushed aside the West Belconnen Warriors 64-18 at Raiders Belconnen. The Kangaroos were given a huge boost before kick off when Jedidiah Simbiken, Tavita Aroha and Nukurua Ngere were named in the lineup despite leading Monaro to the Country Championship title 24 hours earlier. However, the Warriors weren’t as fortunate and had their Monaro representatives, Tori Freeman, Ryley Thomas, Tim Shaw and captain Ryan McQueen missing from the team.

Queanbeyan scored two tries early in the match to assert their dominance before West Belconnen hit back through five-eighth Chris Thorley. However, the resistance was short lived as the Kangaroos once again put their foot on the accelerator to take a 28-6 halftime lead. The Warriors scored two late consolation tries but only once the Roos were out of sight having scored over 50 points. The win sees the Kangaroos maintain second place on the ladder while the Warriors drop down to sixth place.

Gungahlin Bulls 52 (Tries: W Samuel, S Bramich, H Smith-Shields, K Allan, D Williams, D Cooper-Shields, S Lomax 2, D Low; Goals: D Keir 8) d Woden Valley Rams 12 (Tries: K Posantsiz, J Tawes; Goals: C Johnson 2) After losing late in their match against the Yass Magpies last week, the Gungahlin Bulls stormed to a dominant win against the Woden Valley Rams. Canberra Raiders NYC prop William Samuel put in a dominant performance for the Bulls as they scored nine tries against a Woden side heavily affected by the Country Championships final. Second rower Sheen Lomax, son of Raiders legend John, also scored a double to help

propel the Bulls to fifth on the ladder and merely one point away from fourth place. Woden sit in eighth place on the ladder after their heavy loss but have accrued the same number of competition points as the Bulls. Yass Magpies 34 (Tries: K Danilzcak, S Davis, Benny Warner, J Vatikani 2, J Collins; Goals: S Davis 5) d Goulburn Workers Bulldogs 22 (Tries: N Cornish, C Hart, D Stephens, J Berthelot; Goals: B Hewitt, C Hart 2) The Yass Magpies have finished the first half of the season in third place thanks to a win over their Hume Highway rivals, the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs. The Magpies took a 12-0 lead in the first half but the Bulldogs hit back early in the second half to take a slender lead. However, Yass dug deep and scored four straight tries to swing the momentum back in their favour and take control of the match. The defeat means that the Goulburn remain in seventh place heading into the general bye. Queanbeyan Blues 34 (Tries: T Stevens, B Taueki, T Reudiger 2, N Naseri, S Kalsbeek; Goals: Campese 5) d Tuggeranong Bushrangers 12 (Tries: W Tauti, Q Cannon; Goals: J Mitchell 2)

The Queanbeyan Blues remain undefeated after securing a comfortable 24 point win against the Bushrangers. Steered by captain-coach Terry Campese, the Blues controlled the tempo of the match throughout the afternoon. The Bushrangers had a glimmer of hope when Quinlyn Cannon finished off a length of the field try to score under the posts before John Wesley Tauti scored shortly afterwards. However, the Blues once again asserted their dominance when lock Scott Kalsbeek burrowed his way over the line to score. The win sees the Blues remain at the top of the ladder, two points clear of the Queanbeyan Kangaroos while defeat sees the Bushrangers drop to fourth place.

Austbrokers Canberra Raiders Cup Round 10 Preview Woden Valley Rams v Goulburn Workers Bulldogs, 3pm Sunday 18th June at Phillip District Oval, Streamed Live After pinching a win right at the death against the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs in the opening round of fixtures this year, the Woden Valley Rams will be hoping for another victory to remain in the finals hunt. Having won their last meeting 23-22 thanks to a Carl Johnson field goal, the Rams will be out to claim their third win of the season against a Goulburn side that have won two of their last three matches. With Goulburn having acquired Tyler Cornish since their last meeting, Woden captain, Steve Ferry, knows that his side are in for a tough match. “They are a really strong side,” Ferry said. “They’ve come good at this time of the season and we just need to grind away. Goulburn are always good against us and the match will go right down to the wire.” With both teams locked on eight competition points, a win for either side could see them climb as high as fourth on the ladder due if other results go their way. Tuggeranong Bushrangers v Queanbeyan Kangaroos, 2:15pm Saturday 17th June at Greenway Oval The Tuggeranong Bushrangers haven’t suffered back to back losses this season but that record could be under threat as they host the Queanbeyan Kangaroos this Saturday. The Roos haven’t suffered defeat since Round 2 against the Queanbeyan Blues and have scored 339 points this season - the most by any club. The Bushrangers have plenty of strike power themselves and have scored the third highest number of points largely thanks to Jayden Pollard. The towering winger currently is equal third on the try scoring charts with eight so far this season. However, Tuggeranong coach, Justin Giteau, knows his side need to be more consistent as the compeititon enters the second half of the season. "Inconsistency has definitely been a heavy part of our season," Giteau said. "We've had a lot of injuries, particularly in the last three or four weeks. This week we get four or five players back so that'll be a big help."

A win for the Bushrangers will see them remain inside the top four but a loss could see them drop to sixth. For the Kangaroos, a win could see them move to first if results go their way but they are in no danger of dropping down the ladder. Queanbeyan Blues v Belconnen United Sharks, 3pm Saturday 17th June at Seiffert Oval The Queanbeyan Blues have been unstoppable this season and have won all eight of their matches so far this season. With the best defence and second-best attack in the league, Terry Campese’s side brushed aside the Sharks 68-6 in their match earlier in the season. However, under the guidance of Scott Logan, the Sharks have slowly improved and are a much tougher side than the team that was beaten so convincingly at the start of the season. Queanbeyan Blues captain-coach Terry Campese, believes the first twenty minutes of the match will go a long way to deciding the outcome of the match. "That's what our focus is going to be, the first 20 minutes," Campese said. "In their recent matches, the Sharks have been leading at the 50 to 60 minute mark and they only got beaten on the buzzer in quite a few games. They start fast and that's what we have to try and stop." With the return of Josh Baker and Jake Wheeler, Campese has a few selection headaches over the next few days. "It's always good to have depth at the club, especially in our outside backs," Campese said. "The way Wheeler and Baker played before they went to Monaro and obviously for the Monaro side means they will come straight back in. I've just got to decide who plays alongside them our misses out which is the hard part." West Belconnen Warriors v Gungahlin Bulls, 3:15pm Sunday 18th June at Raiders Belconnen After losing the corresponding fixture earlier this season, the West Belconnen Warriors will be hoping to make amends when they take on the Gungahlin Bulls. With their contingent of Monaro representatives back and available for selection, the Warriors will be looking to complete the second half of the regular season in strong form as they attempt to defend their premiership. However, the Bulls will be full of confidence after their 52-12 demolition of the Rams a fortnight ago and their 24-12 win against the Warriors earlier in the season. With both sides sitting just outside the top four, a win for either side could see them move into fourth if the Bushrangers lose to the Kangaroos.

Open Women’s Tackle: Buffaloes Claim First Win The Tuggeranong Buffaloes have come from behind to defeat the Yass Magpies 22-16 at Greenway Oval on Friday night to secure their first win of the Open Women’s Tackle season. In front of a boisterous Tuggeranong crowd, the Buffaloes managed to beat the previously undefeated Yass Magpies thanks to a last minute try Amanda Kyburz. With one minute left on the clock, the Buffaloes rake ran with the ball from dummy half on the last tackle despite having numbers on her outside. When explaining her try, Kyburz said the reason for her deci- Photo: Michael Thompson Photography sion was simple. “They left a gap,” Kyburz said. “I saw it and just went.” Kyburz ability to convert tries also assisted the Buffaloes gain the two competition points after she converted three of her teams four tries, while Yass were unable to convert any of their four tries. However, after the opening exchanges of the match it appeared that Yass would walk away the victors after they scored a try in the opening two minutes of the match thanks to Allie Beck. Although Beck went on to score three tries during the match due to her clever work from dummy half it wasn’t enough as the Buffaloes managed to stay with them every step of the way. It once again appeared that the Magpies were going to be out of the Buffaloes reach when they moved the ball quickly to the right edge but Tuggeranong managed to bundle the winger out of play just as she appeared to have crossed the line. “It was beautiful sliding defence,” Kyburz said. “It’s what we’ve been practicing in training so to be able to bring it onto the field is really what we are aiming to do.” The teams headed into the halftime break with the scores level at 12 all but Yass once again hit the front thanks to Beck. Under relentless pressure from the Magpies attack, Tuggeranong captain Karen Lyons led her team superbly with a try to change the momentum of the match. “I knew once that moment happened that their energy would lift and then we lifted each other up,” Lyon said. With the scores level at 16 all, the Buffaloes piled pressure on the Yass defence before Kyburz capped off her excellent match with the try that gave Tuggeranong their first win in the competition.

CRC players selected to play against Samoa and Scotland

Ten players from the Canberra Raiders Cup have been chosen in the NSW Country U23 side set to take on Samoa and Scotland in the lead up to this year’s Rugby League World Cup. Having represented Monaro in the U23 Country Championships final last weekend at Newcastle, the team captained by Brett Solomon claimed an historic 18-14 win against Newcastle to impress the selectors. “It’s a massive honour to be selected in representative teams,” Solomon said. “When you are versing high quality opponents, it will be a good challenge for the boys.” Monaro coach, Ash Barnes, was equally proud of the achievements of his players. “I think that it’s great that we got so many player’s in,” Barnes said. “I think a number of players are really unlucky not to make the squad as well.” Having coached Monaro to the inaugural U23 Country Championships, Barnes was thrilled with the performance of his side to claim the title.

“I’m ecstatic,” Barnes said. “The boys were outstanding and thoroughly deserved to come away with victory after eight long weeks of preparation to play four consecutive games, three of which were away trips.” Captain, Brett Solomon, was not only pleased by the win but the manner in which Monaro were able to hold off a strong Newcastle side towards the end of the game. “It’s a massive achievement for Monaro to be the first U23 team to take out the Country Championships,” Solomon said. “The game was a very high quality game, Newcastle are a very high quality side, and the game was end to end footy with hardly any mistakes and that showed in the score line.” “The momentum shifted multiple times throughout the game and during the late momentum shift when we had a four point lead, we did well as a team to hold on. “Since week one, we knew we were a quality side and that we could shake the competition but it’s pretty hard to expect to win grand finals. It wasn’t one of our expectations but it’s a massive achievement.”
