People in Wilson are already being hurt by the high water levels on Lake Ontario. The Wilson Harbor is now mostly unusable because docks, slips, walkways and electrical equipment are under water.
All morning long, a drenching rain came pouring down increasing fears that record-high levels on Lake Ontario will go up even more. That is combined with a wind forecast that is expected to push more water on Lake Ontario towards the shoreline.
For people who live on the Wilson Harbor, and along the shoreline, life is very stressful as water inches up closer to their homes.
7 Eyewitness News Reporter Ed Reilly talked with Mike Moyer, owner of Moyer Marine, whose family has had property on the Wilson Harbor since the 1920's. Moyer said he is losing money everyday for the use of his 45 slips. He is also worried the rising water could reach a house on the marina property where his 96-year-old mother still lives.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers sent a full team to Wilson to check problems. The group found that a large storm sewer drainage pipe into Lake Ontario had been washed away and the connection to a west pier on the entrance to the Wilson Harbor is being destroyed by wave action.
New York State continues to provide assistance and money to deal with the problems.
However, business and property owners like Mike Moyer say many people are beginning to look into taking legal action against the International Joint Commission (IJC) which controls the water levels on Lake Ontario by regulating flow through the St. Lawrence River.
Moyer believes the IJC let the lake levels get too high earlier this year before heavy rains hit. The IJC has said it is the record breaking rainfall that has caused the problems.
"If that is the case, why isn't there flooding on all the Great Lakes like Erie?" questioned Moyer.
