Xbox One S

First unveiled at E3 last year, the Xbox One S console is getting a $50 price cut tomorrow — timed alongside the final reveal of Microsoft’s Project Scorpio at 2PM PT / 5PM ET — Microsoft announced on Twitter. This brings the cost of a new Xbox One S to just $249 for 500GB bundles and $299 for 1TB options, for just one week only. Just last week, Sony released a special gold $249 PlayStation 4, down from its normal $300 asking price.

Microsoft clarified that this discount is only good for select Xbox One S models, such as the Battlefield 1 500GB bundle and the 1TB Forza Horizon 3 bundle. This does not apply, however, to the $249 500GB Minecraft bundle. Last year, the Xbox One enjoyed a $50 price cut just in advance of the reveal of the Xbox One S, and a further $20 cut following it.

It’s not clear where Microsoft will land on Project Scorpio pricing, but a plethora of powerful components that the company hasn’t been shy about trumpeting in the lead up to tomorrow’s press conference would seem to indicate premium pricing. Microsoft’s Mike Ybarra — corporate vice president of the Xbox and Windows gaming platform at Microsoft — said Scorpio is being built for “that premium customer, the gamer that expects the absolute best versions of the games.”

The Xbox One launched in November of 2013 for $500, compared to a $400 launch price for the PlayStation 4, though Microsoft rapidly reduced the price of the machine in the ensuing months by omitting the originally required Kinect camera.

[Update: Microsoft emailed to clarify the announcement, with details on which bundles would be available for discount — noting that pricing may vary by retailer — and specifying that the discount would only last the week. This piece has been updated accordingly.]
