If you read: How to use PR to get your website on the first page of Google, you will know getting a link to your website from an online news site is an excellent way to boost your own website’s authority in search rankings.

News website usually have high ‘Domain Authority’ because they are seen as publishing trustworthy information and also linking to other trustworthy places on the web.

What is Domain Authority?

Domain Authority (DA) is a score that predicts how well a website will rank on search engines. It is a metric provided by Moz.com and scored on a 100-point scale. You can use DA to compare one site to another or to track your website over time.

DA is based on a lot of factors. Mostly, they are link profile factors such as how many backlinks are pointing to your website and how authoritative those sites are. DA is difficult to influence directly. You can’t change your DA score just by changing things like your meta tags. It is very difficult to gain a high DA number and only sites like Facebook and Google have a score of 100.

All the top 20 news sites have DA scores of at least 90, and three have scores of 99. This means Google holds them in high regard and sends a nice chunk of natural search traffic their way.

In the UK, the news sites with the highest DA are BBC News Online, the Guardian, the Times and the Telegraph. (Note that despite the Economist and the Times being subscription sites; they are still in the top 20 because a lot of their content is accessible to search engines.)
