Southern League Pitcher and Player of the Week May 29-June 4

June 5, 2017 - Southern League (SL1) News Release

MARIETTA, GA - The Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs announces its Pitcher and Player of the Week for May 29 through June 4. Righthander Jordan Stephens of the Birmingham Barons was selected as the Pitcher of the Week while Montgomery Biscuits shortstop Andrew Velazquez earned Player of the Week honors.

Jordan Stephens' first start of 2017 and Southern League debut could not have gone any better. Allowing just one hit and one walk over six scoreless frames, the Rice University product was in control of the Barons 7-6 win over Chattanooga. Although he did not factor into the decision, Stephens struck out six batters in the outing. Furthermore, the Alvin, Texas resident produced a league-low .050 opponents' batting average and WHIP of 0.33.

Over six games played last week, Montgomery shortstop Andrew Velazquez dominated league pitchers. The Bronx, New York native either led or tied for the league lead with a .565 batting average, 13 hits, seven extra-base hits, 27 total bases, three homeruns, ten RBI, a .600 on-base percentage, and otherworldly 1.174 slugging percentage and OPS of 1.774. Velazquez added five runs, three doubles, a triple, two walks, and a stolen base to his tally. Recording five multi-hit games last week, his biggest moment came in the Biscuits 8-3 win over Tennessee on May 30. In the first inning, Velazquez broke the game open with a three-run homerun to right to put his side up 7-0. The shortstop either scored or drove in a run in all six games played.
