Liverpool should prioritise signing one top class defender.

Liverpool’s transfer plans suffered a setback as they backed out of the battle to sign Virgil Van Dijk.
The Reds offered a public apology to Southampton after being accused of tapping up the defender, and vowed to end their interest in the centre-back.
Van Dijk was a top class option for the Reds in central defence, and they may want to spend a little time identifying another quality alternative.

In the mean time they should put their negotiating efforts into securing left-back Benjamin Mendy, who is a top target at the position.
Mendy, 22, is wanted by Liverpool, according to ESPN, although they face competition from Manchester City.
Mendy impressed during Monaco’s Ligue 1 title triumph and run to the Champions League semi-finals.
The Reds have been linked to a number of left-backs, Andrew Robertson, Ryan Bertrand and Gael Clichy, but Mendy is by far and away the top option.
They may have missed out on their first choice centre-back, but signing the best left-back they can should be of utmost importance while they work out their post-Van Dijk plan.
