Auburn's Casey Mize named 3rd-team All-American

Casey Mize's impressive sophomore campaign was capped with All-America honors on Thursday.

The Auburn right-hander was named a third-team All-American by Baseball America. Mize went 8-2 this season in 12 starts with a 2.04 ERA, which ranked third in the SEC. He tossed 83 2/3 innings and struck out 109 batters -- the most by an Auburn pitcher since 1999, when Brent Schoening had 151 and Chris Bootcheck had 125.

Mize also boasted a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 12.1-to-1, which led the nation. It also nearly matched the output of his final start of the season, a complete-game effort against Tennessee Tech in the NCAA Tallahassee Regional last weekend during which the right-hander from Springville struck out 12 -- all swinging -- and issued just one walk.

That outing was one of two complete games this season for Mize, who also went the distance against South Carolina on March 31. Over his final 31 2/3 innings, Mize walked just one and struck out 36.

Mize is the 25th All-American in Auburn's history and the second under head coach Butch Thompson, joining former teammate Anfernee Grier, who earned the honor last season as a center fielder. Mize is the fifth Auburn player since 2000 to be named an All-American by Baseball America, joining Gabe Gross (2000), Todd Faulkner (2000), hunter Morris (2010) and Grier.
