Fallen Star

Rate this book
She has a history of falling for the wrong man, and this Hollywood bad boy is as wrong as they come.

Scott Deacon was on top of the world until his drug-fueled flame-out got him blacklisted in Hollywood. Now, four years after losing everything, he's clean, sober, and desperate to revive his acting career.

But first he'll have to prove to the world that he's a changed man. And he's determined to start with the frosty script supervisor on his new film who happens to be renting the house next door.

Grace knows better than to fall for a Hollywood bad boy like Scott. An arrogant movie star with a troubled past and a big honking chip on his shoulder? No, thank you. He may be sex on wheels, but beneath the charming facade he's just another cocky jackass destined to make her life more difficult.

Except...

The more time they spend together, the hotter the fire between them burns. With every flirtatious smile and brush of his hand, she feels her defenses crumbling.

But can she trust him with her heart? Or is she buying herself a front-row ticket to heartbreak?

FALLEN STAR is a standalone story set in the same universe as RISING STAR, featuring a brand new couple with their own happy ending. The books in this series can be read in any order.

I believe I've tried Nix before, and ended up DNFing or not being in the mood.

Full disclosure-I totally thought this would be rockstar romance, d'oh, and it's instead actor romance. Which is decidedly not my fame preference. (Athletes and rockstars, please!)

It also dealt with a recovering addict, Scott, which is quite frankly 89% of the appeal for me. It was really gentle in that regard and that caused far less angst than I really expected.

Ultimately, this is a sweet book, and a sexy book (it includes a request for face-sitting so that is not what I meant by sweet.) Both characters have their realistic insecurities, stemming from realistic miscommunication or spiraling effects of doubts. I thought these were really well done, particularly with the shadow of addiction recovery and other mental health issues. It also includes a good deal of set talk, since Grace is the script-runner and Scott is a sort-of second chance actor, and I thought that some of it was a little much but it didn't ever veer to bothering me.

CW: substance abuse/addiction, recovery

I zoomed through this story! Susannah Nix’s books are always great but she's really shining with her Starstruck series. This is my favorite book of hers yet!

Scott made me swoon for him! It was fascinating to see what it's like for an actor to try to break back in to the industry after substance abuse issues trashed his reputation. I haven’t worked with people in recovery before but this seemed like an accurate portrayal. Scott has an additional layer of untreated anxiety and it was really interesting to see how this played out and affected his behavior. He doesn’t start off on the right foot with people on set, for some understandable reasons, but it was marvelous to watch him flip the switch and turn on the charm. Especially because of how much Grace wanted to resist that charm.

Grace was a fantastic heroine, well-suited for Scott, even though she wasn’t always sure about him. Her job as a script supervisor was truly fascinating and I loved watching her keep track of all the continuity details. I didn’t know anything about that job beforehand and it’s something I really appreciate about this series: all the movie set behind the scenes info.

Grace and Scott don’t discuss what his addiction means for their relationship until very near the end. It surprised me when I realized this because it’s a pretty big deal. But when I reflected on it, it made so much sense why it happened that way. Scott admits early on that he is not a very emotionally intelligent person. He’s also fighting to restore his reputation so he can have an acting career and he’s scared that talking about the reality of his addiction will scare Grace away. All he wants is a chance.

Grace, on the other hand, is trying to protect herself. She doesn’t believe Scott will want anything to do with her once they’re no longer working together every day. She sees the movie set as a bubble and while relationships may start there, they don’t often have the staying power to continue. She keeps wondering what he sees in her and she just wants to enjoy him for as long as she can. It makes sense not to have a deeper discussion about his addiction, beyond what he shares with her, because she thinks this is only temporary. And when Scott pulls away from her after filming ends and they’re no longer in New Orleans, it feeds both her insecurities and her belief that it was never going to last.

I wanted to implore Grace not to give up on him, just as much as I was yelling at Scott to reach out to her and be honest. Those two broke my heart! But out of this trying time came the opportunity for them to really lay it out for one another and to make it clear why they chose each other. Sure, they’ll have stuff to figure out but I fully believed in their happily ever after.

There was so much angst and longing and yet it was such a fun, engaging read at the same time. I couldn't get enough!

Disclosure: I received an advanced copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Today I read “Fallen Star” – the second book in the Starstruck Series by Susannah Nix. Two weeks ago or so I read the first book “Rising Star” and already liked the way this author develops her stories. This time she went even further.

Fallen star is almost a cliché without being one – let’s see how do I explain this …

This book is a lesson on prejudice and pride, a lesson on strength and vulnerability – a story of how they end up in misunderstandings when people do not communicate

It should be a lecture for us to not judge people without knowing everything.

To not condemn them for past mistakes unless they are unforgivable

To give them a chance to redeem themselves if their mistakes are forgivable – especially if we have no idea what actually happened.

I actually physically hurt for Scott because the way Susannah Nix presented the story is exactly the way it happens in reality. Not that I know anything about the life of people in Hollywood but lets be honest … WE ALL HAVE BEEN THERE AND DONE THAT – and I am more than relieved that I do NOT have wear that T-shirt.

And it is only one step from real life that we know to the social media we also follow. We see things there that someone posted. Someone that might have received money for it or gained otherwise from it. The context in which it is posted might be right or it might be wrong – we are in no position to judge – yet we do it – automatically – either in quiet in our minds or out loud – but we do it.

I bet from the plot you are expecting Scott to be a bad boy – and Grace to be the “innocent victim to his charm” – and maybe I am the odd one out there but for me Scott is actually the “victim” and Grace is the perfect mirror of our society.

Taking the first line from the blurb – actually Grace SHOULD know better – because there is not only this one side to Hollywood – she should know there is also the other side – the one where appearance is everything and once you have a “name” you have it forever – in good times and in bad.

But Grace is written in a way that shows a person can also change her mind believable and the reader can forgive her too for her prejudice.

I really loved how the whole plot developed as it felt real – it never felt exaggerated in any way and I think every reader that likes the blurb will be able to step into the story and feel it.

And maybe we can learn something from it - so we think twice before coming to an opinion the next time we see something on social media.

I love it, I love it, I. LOVE. IT! This was my 2nd Susannah Nix read and I have absolutely fallen in love with Grace and Scott. It's definitely one of those books that's hard to put down. As I was laying in bed reading this, I kept saying that I'd read to 50% and then go to sleep, but that turned into devouring every single word into the late hours of the night. From beginning to end, these two will pull at your heart and emotions and you'll quite possibly shed some blubbering tears.

Fallen Star is a well-written, fun, standalone romance with likable characters, no cheating, and a HEA. Grace is heroine who works in the movie industry as a script supervisor and makes a snap judgment about Scott, a former drug addict movie star. I loved how both characters were strong, but also vulnerable which made them more relatable. As a slow burn romance, I enjoyed watching their relationship evolved from mutual dislike, to friends, and finally to lovers. I found myself chuckling at the knock-knock jokes that Scott texted to Grace and wanting to hug Scott as he tried to overcome some of his insecurities. One of the things that I loved about this book is how the author dives into the mental health of a former addict. I also was intrigued by how the author detailed some of the behind the scenes action that goes into making a movie. Fallen Star is my first book by this author and I plan to read the previous book in the Starstruck series. I received Fallen Star as an ARC.

This is the second novel in this series but the first read for me! I was fine jumping in but I completely intend to dive into book one as well!

This novel follows Grace and Scott and throws us head first into the movie industry and I loved every second of it. There is something angst filled with any celebrity type read for me. I love the chemistry of it and the chaos. This novel completely delivered.

I completely fell in love with the characters and their banter. I swooned at the industry description and truly by the end of this I felt like I was watching a swoon filled romance show that I fell in love with.

I laughed and felt the angst and at the end of the day it was a slow burn romance that was filled with  a peek into the celebrity life.

I just loved “Fallen Star”, the second book in Ms. Nix’s “Starstruck” series. You don’t need to read the first book, “Rising Star” to enjoy “Fallen Star”. In fact I read Fallen first and then, because I liked it so much, I went back to read Rising. Full disclosure: Susannah Nix is an automatic one-click author for me, so I’m excited to share my thoughts.

Scott Deacon is a former child star whose life and career imploded because of drug addiction. Clean and sober now, friends of his went out on a limb to secure a leading role in a new movie. Grace Speer is the script supervisor for the project, and isn’t looking forward to working with someone who she thinks is going to be a train-wreck. But Scott surprises everyone, and earns Grace’s grudging respect. After a while, that respect turns into friendship. Will their friendship turn into something more, or would life back in the spotlight ruin their chances?

Scott and Grace are great characters. Scott is an actor, so he uses his acting ability to hide his insecurities about stepping back into the professional film world. He knows that because of his past, this may be his only shot. On set, he is gregarious, friendly, and flirty, but when he’s alone his demons surface to try to undermine his success and sobriety. I think Ms. Nix did a great job of revealing his insecurities and emotions, and showing how they have the ability to affect his sobriety. Grace is all about the details. As script supervisor, it’s her job to make sure the scene set-ups are the same for each shot (continuity) and makes notes of any script changes. She’s not quite sure what to think about Scott. I liked the way she allowed herself room to adjust her opinion of Scott as things developed. The secondary characters are well-rounded and fleshed out as well. I especially like actress Poppy Carpenter and Carmen Vargas, the costume supervisor.

The book’s plot centers around a film set. Ms. Nix filled the pages with all sorts of interesting information and tidbits. Those details helped create a realistic “look behind the scenes” feel to the story. Scott’s and Grace’s love story is a very slow burn. It makes sense that Grace isn’t going to go from thinking Scott is the biggest jerk on the planet to being head over heels in love in just a few days. Their friendship blossomed first over the course of several weeks, and then Grace slowly realized she has feelings for Scott. But she’s unsure of his feelings for her. When they finally do come together, it’s a big payoff for the reader.

Overall, I loved it! And I highly recommend “Fallen Star” to you. (I received an Advanced Reader Copy, and this is my honest, voluntary review.)

Full review and excerpt available on my blog, Laurie Reads Romance.

"Fallen Star" centers on Scott Deacon, a former child star turned grown-up Hollywood bad boy, and Grace Speer, a script supervisor who has sworn to never again date an actor after her last boyfriend left her for his younger co-star. Scott and Grace are thrown together on a location shoot for Scott's latest movie in New Orleans, his attempt at a comeback after several years spent away from the spotlight overcoming a drug addiction. Scott is desperate to prove that he still has what it takes to be a successful Hollywood actor. Grace, meanwhile, has serious reservations about Scott due to his bad reputation and is determined to keep her distance, but her job forces her to work closely with him throughout the shoot. Not only that, Grace and Scott end up living next door to each other in rental housing provided by the production, and eventually form an unlikely friendship while fighting stronger feelings for each other. Will Scott be able to overcome Grace's reservations about dating an actor, especially one with his track record of addiction and fear of commitment? You'll just have to read the book for yourself to find out! :-)

Overall, I highly recommend "Fallen Star." It was absolutely a 5-star read for me. I can't wait to see what Susannah Nix writes next!

Grace and Scott are likeable and relatable protagonists (not that I've ever been a celebrity with drug problems, or ever worked in Hollywood at all, but hey...).
Their story feels real, and I love seeing their relationship grow from mutual dislike into something bordering on respect, then a tentative friendship, and then - finally! - into so much more.
The problems and hang-ups they face are realistic and dealt with in a grown-up manner.

This is the first book in the series I have read, but now Rising Star is definitely on my TBR pile!

Looks can be deceiving, and Fallen Star is the perfect example of how you shouldn't believe everything you see -- or read. I fell hard for Grace and Scott. Their connection was amazing, and this story is so full of love and hope and finding something special. Their road to get there isn't an easy one, but through all of the ups and downs of their relationship, Grace and Scott work at it.

It was interesting to get the behind-the-scenes stuff of Hollywood in this book. And my heart broke for Scott, because he was really placed in a crappy situation and tried to make the best of things. It's a wonderful slow burn between the two of them, and Scott is trying so, so hard to be a better person and rise above the bad rep that's been following him around. He's carrying around some major insecurities, and Grace is that special someone who sees him for the sweet, sensitive soul he is behind the recovering junkie.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Such a well written romance. Nicely paced and a nice balance between angst and moving forward. Grace is relatable — an every day woman just doing her job — and Scott is such a great flawed hero. Put them in a fun location and interesting situation and it all comes together so well. My first book by this author but likely not my last!

I was one of the lucky ones to receive an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. That being said, I loved this book.

I recently discovered Susannah Nix and I have yet to be disappointed. Fallen Star is an enemies to lovers slow burn romance.

Scott is a well known actor who has had his share of troubles. He’s a recovering addict that stayed in the news for his mishaps similar to real life celebrities. Underneath his cocky attitude is a man who suffers from insecurities and anxiety. Grace is your everyday girl working as a script supervisor. Due to her break up with her actor ex-boyfriend, she has vowed never to date another actor.

Grace has her preconceived notions of who Scott is and made an enemy out of him before officially meeting. Scott makes it his mission to win her over by allowing her see who he really is. And as she changes her mind about him and he drops his guard, they fall in love. These two are written with such depth that they are relatable and their experiences are believable. Their journey to falling in love wasn’t too rushed and wasn’t too slow. It was just right.

Fallen Star is a beautifully written book with wonderful characters and a relatable plot. We are so quick as a society to make judgements about people based on their past, based on something we read on social media, so quick to judge without knowing the person, without knowing what really happened, or the circumstances surrounding things. Susannah Nix also tackles the tough subject of drug addiction with class.

I loved watching their relationship evolve. To see it grow from distaste to friendship to romance and love was beautiful and realistic. The knock-knock jokes were fun and made me fall in love even more with Scott. Nix writes her characters so true-to-life that the readers feel connected to them in every way.

Susannah Nix is one of my favorite authors. She always pulls me in from the beginning of her books, and not only writes an amazing romance, but also teaches and/or reminds me of valuable life lessons.

I like how this book treated the subject of addiction in a real, relatable and honest manner. I really liked how you get to understand Scott and the insecurities and issues he is facing day-to-day after going through rehab. Scott gets all my love, to be honest, because I really wasn't feeling Grace, the heroine.

Fallen Star

Find this review and more at kimberlyfaye reads.

Fallen Star was unputdownable and absolutely wonderful. I adored Grace. I swooned over Scott. And I loved that the book was set in New Orleans, a city I just visited a little over a month ago. All the scenes — as well as the tastes — were fresh in my mind as I read and I felt like I was right back there again. I also wished I was right back there again to have some beignets and café au laits from Cafe Du Monde. Hello, food cravings. I might have to go in search of DC's version of beignets soon, even though they won't be the same. But, I digress.

Though Fallen Star touches on some heavy issues at times, it was never overwhelming. And, for the most part, I cheesy-grinned my way through it while falling in love with Grace and Scott. I enjoyed the delightful slow burn while they got to know each other and as things developed between them. I think it was especially sweet and satisfying since they had a pretty rocky start. Grace had been burned in the past and sworn off actors as a result. Scott was an actor — so strike one — but also a recovering addict who had a bit of an attitude problem. Yet, somehow it all worked. More than worked, actually. Their story gave me all kinds of feels.

You don't need to read Rising Star to enjoy Fallen Star, but I'd still suggest going back and reading it at some point. It's a great read. I'm totally loving this series and can't wait to see what's next for it and Susannah!

I received a complimentary copy of this book for review consideration. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Favorite quotes:

"Café au lait and beignets."
"You're officially my favorite person today."

"I'm done dating actors. Actors are like toddlers, only with bulging biceps and winning smiles and abs you can grate cheese on. But still: toddlers. They are not relationship material."

"You taste even better than I imagined."

This thing between them wasn't a dream, and it wasn't a fantasy. It was scary and imperfect and wonderful.

More of a 4.5 if I am totally honest. This is a completely adorable and feel good romance that has a perfect balance of sexy scenes as well. The characters are great and written so well, I cared for both leads as a couple but also as separate individuals. I really liked the pacing of the romance, it felt so much more realistic than some romances because it wasnt rushed into the steamy stuff, but took the time to build a more believable attraction that was founded on more than looks and sex appeal. And the movie star trope is always appreciated by me.

I got an advance copy and ate this latest romance by Susannah up! The hero and heroine are likable and I was rooting for them the length of the book! The story was believable and I will re-read this book! If you like writers of smart savvy women you will love Susannah! Her characters complex and interesting! Her characters in this book have trials but aren't immature about them.
And she gives a shout out to the value of 12 step groups. My husband was married to an alcoholic and found great support and strength in Al Anon. Addiction is addressed with understanding. I never look at at a Nix novel to see how much book is left and wish it was almost over. I'm always glad to see I still have lots of book left! I love all of her books but this is my new fave tied with her first book, Remedial Rocket Science! Viva la Susannah Nix! Keep the good reads coming! Lisa

This was such a refreshing take on the Hollywood bad boy trope. The writing was seamless, the dialogue snappy and engaging, the plot really interesting and scintillating, but the stand out element of this story for me was the characterisation.

The hero and heroine are so multifaceted, full of depth and yearning and love and mistakes and it's being a part of their blossoming friendship and subsequent relationship that we truly get to experience something remarkable and beautiful. Author Susannah Nix is fast becoming one of my very favourite writers and with profound, sweet and sexy stories like this one it isn't a huge surprise.

(I received an ARC of this book) I really enjoy Susannah Nix's writing. Her books are always thought provoking, and address important subjects, which I really appreciate! Her characters are flawed and human, and even in a setting most of us don't have a lot of experience with personally (aka Hollywood) she still manages to make her characters relatable and human. This book handled the topic of addiction recovery really well, and showed the reality of it: that even once you're clean, it does not mean that you are not still an addict, and that you do not struggle. I had SO much respect for Scott and everything he went through, and how he continues to try to be better. He was one of my favourite male characters that Nix has written, and I would recommend this book just for his story.

That being said, I was not a huge fan of Grace. She was fine, but a lot of her decisions rubbed me that wrong way, and I feel like we didn't get to know her as well as Scott. We don't really get much background on her; she had a relationship that didn't work out, but that doesn't explain all of her reservations about dating. Also, how did she get to the job she's in now? I would've liked to know more about her, and I feel like if I did I would like her more. As it was, she didn't seem to really have empathy for what Scott was going to, and was very judgemental from the start. And when they have difficulty at the end, she never thinks of what he may be feeling, just that she's upset. What Scott did wasn't right, but she also never gave him the benefit of the doubt. I would have liked to see Grace research addiction a bit more when her and Scott get together, especially because she seemed to keep making snap judgements about it that aren't true.

Despite my complaints about Grace, I recognize that she is human. I honestly can't say for sure that I would do any different in her situation, as someone who hasn't experienced addiction. I appreciate how real she was as a character, and though she didn't handle the situation perfectly, it did work out. I think this book was an accurate portrayal of addiction, being a child star, and working in Hollywood, and I liked the different angles that the author explored. I would recommend this book, but I would also read the first book in the series first, because I think I enjoyed it more! The writing was fantastic, they characters were honest, and the storyline is one we need more of! Will definitely be reading more of Nix in the future.
