Young People prove that Disability Works at Philips Work Experience Day
ARTGU’s young people had an enjoyable and informative day at Philip’s UK headquarters in Guildford last week.It was amazing what was covered during the day and it’s very useful for any of the young people who will include this in their CV when looking for work. Philip’s took the young people through various aspects of a business including marketing, sales, stock control, taking orders from customers and customer service. Our young people were given two products and were responsible for creating marketing posters. They also tried out two Philip’s products and made a sales pitch, learned where products were sold, logged orders on a spreadsheet, worked out invoice costs and checked that there was enough stock to sell on inventory lists. Finally they learned how to give assistance and advice to customers with different issues and work out the appropriate answer to give them.  Aisha Ariakutti said, “All in all it was an amazingly useful and fun day, giving our young people a chance to practice the skills they learned. Thanks once again to Philips for making it possible. We look forward to more days like this for our young people.”

Summer's here at last - and there's so much to do and learn!
It’s been a busy month for our young people as they're now enjoying the warm weather and beginning to embrace summer. There's been so much happening this month, we have to choose just a few of the young people's activities to give you a flavour of what they've been up to. From residentials, to trekking for DofE Awards, Tesco litter picking, monopoly at Park Barn and our usual sporting activities of cricket, football and bowling, there's always so much for our young people to do.

A Taste of Summer with ARTGU’s Cook & Grow

The ARTGU group really have been enjoying the Birtley House allotment. Their hard work is reaping some delicious produce including lettuces, beetroots, runner beans, tomatoes and last but not least, English strawberries. This activity has been a fantastic way to encourage the young people to understand more about where food comes from, healthy eating and think about new recipe ideas.

The Birtley House residents hosted our young people last week for a delicious strawberry cream tea, it was a lovely afternoon where young people and older residents mingled and enjoyed a traditional English summer experience! To find out more about ARTGU click here.

Building Futures Group Year A Group 2 canal boat trip
Everyone was very excited as they got on board the Angel Blue canal boat. The group had to buy provisions before setting off down river. With great determination, teamwork and communication the group travelled 4 locks along to Farncombe boathouse. After a delicious meal that everyone helped with, they played bingo, took a pleasant sunset stroll and had a great night’s sleep. After breakfast they set off on the return journey. Siona Booth, Building Futures Project Worker said, “The team worked so well together and looked like professionals on the canal! We hope Group 1 enjoy themselves as much as we have.”

Building Futures Group have been fundraising!

The young people have been busy doing some fundraising for halow.  They've been choosing their own activities to raise money, learning about where funds come from, as well as how to approach family and friends to support them.
The group have done a Bikeathon at the gym - reaching an amazing 25km! The Danceathon at the Discovery Centre lasted a whole session - 2.5 hours of dancing! As a group they want to raise enough for a fun activity - to be decided soon! We'll keep you posted when the grand total comes in and what the group decide to do with the proceeds of their hard earned fundraising activities.

Going for bronze with the Duke of Edinburgh Awards
The BFG residentials continue as Year B take on the challenge of preparing for and taking part in their Duke of Edinburgh practice expedition. Over two days, during the heatwave, the whole of year B showed remarkable resilience, organisation skills, determination and planning in making sure they arrived fully equipped and ready to walk along the North Downs way, taking in the beautiful scenery. Each young person rose to the challenge of taking the map and guiding their team members along the route skilfully and with great confidence. Thankfully it was well shaded to protect them from the heat. Camp was set up swiftly and with great teamwork and cooperation from all, they enjoyed a meal and outdoor sports during a sunny evening. The second day started early and they worked hard together to decamp, with the weather still so hot, the team showed so much support and encouragement for one another on their journey back via the river to a well-deserved lunch.
Siona commented, “All of year B should be feeling a great sense of achievement as the 2 days were a great success, we’re so proud of their efforts to achieve what they did in challenging weather and the way everyone worked so well together. It really was a great adventure.”

Damon Hill’s Karting Challenge 2017 raises over £20,000 in record heat!
Now in its sixth year, Damon Hill’s Karting Challenge was a great success again this year – raising well over £20,000 for halow’s work. In spite of record breaking heat, where temperatures hit 34 degrees at Daytona Sandown in Esher, the driving teams were raring to go and there was great excitement among the drivers and spectators!
Our driving teams came from various Surrey and London businesses (and even a team from Holland for the first time!) and braving the searing heat, made it an exciting 2.5 hour race, where the top three teams came in within seconds of each other. Damon’s All Stars team won the race and all the teams enjoyed racing against the professionals. Thank you to all involved – your support puts young people with learning disabilities in the driving seat. Read the whole story here.
Thanks to our driving teams, Damon's All Stars professional drivers, Daytona and our sponsors for the amazing auction prizes! Two of the auction winners are lucky enough to be on the Hillclimb with Damon Hill this weekend at the legendary Goodwood Festival of Speed. Hope they enjoy the drive! We will announce 2018’s date soon. To find out more about the Karting Challenge, click here. To register your interest in racing for halow in 2018, please email: fundraising@halowproject.org.uk.
