A Young Child's Prayer

Several generations of a large family gathered for a celebratory dinner to honor a graduate’s accomplishments. After an earlier disagreement among family members,
the atmosphere was tense and tempers were flaring.

Four-year-old Kathy volunteered to say the prayer before the family meal. Surrounded by parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and siblings, she solemnly closed her eyes, lowered her head, and recited, “Our Father, who draws art in heaven, Howard is his name. Amen.” Grievances were quickly forgotten as laughter rippled through the group. The moment became memorable as a time of joy rather than anger.

Life is filled with moments. In an instant, situations may change, differences set aside,
and attitudes adjusted when we remind ourselves to focus on the things in life that matter. We capture these moments in time to relive later—the joys, the triumphs, and yes, even the sadness. These life vignettes are reminders that in the midst of any situation and with faith, joy can find a footing and grow. Life may not always be perfect, but there can be perfect moments to help us along the way.

Make your moments matter. Be kind. Laugh often. Share joy. Love each other.

Blessings for a wonderful, relaxing summer!

4 Reasons More Is Caught Than Taught

Can’t Hear You
If your words don’t match your actions, then your children can’t hear what you’re saying because your actions are drowning out your words. I know, I’ve done it, but this should give us pause to reflect on what we do can be more important than what we say, as experience has proven that more is caught than is taught. They might not do what you say but do what you do, so our examples are of supreme importance.

Monkey See,
Monkey Do

The old expression, “monkey see, monkey do” is perfectly appropriate for parents, foster parents, and grandparents. That expression means that they will repeat what you do and not what you say. If we aren’t working with our children when they’re young, we’ll be spending a lot more time with our children, like in court. They will see what you do and tend to believe that it must be okay to lie and say “Tell them I’m not home” when someone calls and asks for them. When they see you drive over the speed limit, they’ll think its okay for them to bend or break the rules.

Investments
We can’t invest in anything more important than the souls of our children and grandchildren but we must start early. If we neglect our duties as a parent to instill in them the laws of God when they’re young, then they’ll see God’s laws as irrelevant to their lives. Invest in their lives while they’re young or you’ll invest a lot more time and money than you want.

Modeling

If your children see you are not going to compromise with sin or with God’s law, they’ll see that it must be important. They might not tell you that they’re watching, but believe me, they are! They see a lot more than we give them credit for. If we hedge on things in life, they’ll see the model or pattern of behavior for their lives. Scary, isn’t it?

Take Time To Laugh

When we take time to laugh together as a family, we have more fun as a family. Do this activity to enjoy a few giggles together.

Activity Plan

Say this prayer aloud to begin.

God, you created everything, including laughter, silliness, and a sense of humor. Thank you for making ways for us to have fun and to laugh. Amen.

Watch the first YouTube clip about Maru the Cat.

Watch the second YouTube clip about Oskar the Blind Kitten.

Together, share your responses to these questions:
  1. Which YouTube clip was funnier to you? Why?
  2. Which YouTube clips make you laugh?
  3. How often do you look for things that make you laugh?
  4. Why is it important to laugh?
  5. How can we laugh more often as a family?

As a family, talk about the difference between laughter that heals and laughter that hurts. Laughter that heals is the type of laughter that's truly funny for everyone. Laughter that hurts is the type of laughter where someone feels singled out and made fun of.

Encourage family members to share the funny YouTube videos, movies, and TV shows that they find.

Grace Before Easter Meals

Lord God and Giver of All Good Gifts,
we are grateful
as we pause
before this meal,
for all the blessings
of life that You give to us.

Daily, we are fed
with good things,
nourished
by friendship and care,
feasted with forgiveness and understanding.

And so, mindful
of Your continuous care,
we pause to be grateful
for the blessings
of this table.

Pause for silent reflection.

May Your presence
be the "extra" taste
to this meal
which we eat
in the name
of Your Son, Jesus.
