Paul Mariner suggests Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand for Liverpool

Should Liverpool make a move for Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand in the summer transfer window?

Former Arsenal forward Paul Mariner has suggested to ESPN FC that Liverpool should make a move for Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand in the summer transfer window.

Bertrand is one of the best left-backs in the Premier League and was in brilliant form for Southampton last season.

The England international scored two goals and provided four assists in 28 league games for the Saints during the 2016-17 campaign.

James Milner was Liverpool’s first-choice left-back last season, and although the 31-year-old performed well, he is a midfielder by trade.

If the Reds are to challenge for the Premier League title next season and progress to the knockout rounds of the Champions League, then they will need a ‘proper’ and ‘well-established’ left-back.

Former Arsenal forward Mariner has suggested that the Merseyside outfit should make a move for Southampton left-back Bertrand.

“Liverpool, how long can they keep playing James Milner in the left-back slot?” Mariner told ESPN FC regarding Bertrand.

“So it makes sense for him to go to Liverpool. Will Southampton sell? Probably, they have always been a selling club.”

Liverpool have already been linked with another Southampton defender. According to The Express, the Reds want to sign Virgil van Dijk from the Saints in the summer transfer window.
