Newsweek: PETA has killed “tens of thousands of animals”

Unfortunately, the magazine accepted their excuse, overlooking the real reasons why Newsweek has a recurring feature they call “Fact Check” in which they evaluate various claims circulating on social media, ostensibly to determine whether those claims are true. The magazine recently evaluated the claim that PETA kills thousands of animals every year. There is no denying that PETA has killed over 40,000 animals. Those records come from PETA itself which it is required to report…

The Deadly Predictability of PETA

Every February — as surely as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west — you can be certain that the following events will occur: The Virginia Department of Agriculture will release PETA’s statistics for the prior year and, while communities across Virginia and the country will have reported placement rates as high as 99%, PETA will once again have needlessly killed the majority of animals it took in. PETA will attempt…

PETA continues to kill thousands yearly

The Virginia Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services, which oversees animal “shelters” in the state, released PETA statistics for 2020. While communities across Virginia and the country are reporting placement rates that are higher than ever —-Š in some cases, the highest in their history (as high as 99% in municipal shelters) and, given the demand for animals as a result of the pandemic, many are even finding themselves empty for the first time in…

The Killing of Maya

Today is the anniversary of PETA’s killing of Maya. On October 18, 2014, two PETA representatives backed their van up to a home in Parksley, VA, and threw biscuits to Maya, who was sitting on her porch. They were hoping to coax her off her property and give PETA the ability to claim she was a stray dog “at large” whom they could therefore legally impound. Maya refused to stay off the property and after…

Study: Denver BSL cost $100M but no benefit

The University of Denver has announced that they have completed research on the economic impact of Denver’s “pit bull” ban. The work — a collaboration that includes departments focused on law, public policy, animal studies, social work, economics, and business — found that enforcement of the ban has cost taxpayers over $100,000,000 over the last 30 years, but has not resulted in a measurable impact on public safety. The research also determined that enforcement is…

Study: People Think Well Known Means Effective, Except for PETA

Americans have a soft spot for animals and are not very discerning when it comes to which animal groups to support. In fact, according to a new study, they falsely equate having heard of a group with it being effective. In other words, because most Americans have heard of the ASPCA or the Humane Society of the United States, they wrongly also believe those groups are on the front lines leading and effecting positive change…

Protesting for an Identity

Last week, in a PETA-style bid to get media attention, a  member of a group called Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) stormed the stage where Vice-President Joe Biden was giving a speech after his Super Tuesday victories in the Democratic primaries, carrying a sign that said “Let Dairy Die.” DxE got their media coverage. But did the incident help cows? A new study out of Stanford University and the University of Toronto says No. In fact,…

PETA Death Toll Surpasses 40,000

One of PETA’s 40,854 known victims. The Virginia Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services, which oversees animal “shelters” in the state, just released PETA statistics for 2019. While communities across Virginia and the country are reporting placement rates that are higher than ever – in some cases, the highest in their history (as high as 99% in municipal shelters) – PETA continues to act as the functional equivalent of a slaughterhouse. In 2019, PETA put…

VA Legislation Seeks to Put PETA & Others Out of Killing Business

New legislation introduced in Virginia once again seeks to put PETA and other pet slaughterhouses in the state out of the killing business. SB 304 would require “shelters” in Virginia to maintain a minimum 50% placement rate or lose their ability to “purchase, possess, or administer” sodium pentobarbital, the barbiturate PETA and others use to kill animals. PETA’s killing has claimed 39,276 known victims, including healthy puppies and kittens, often killed within minutes without ever…

A Picture Worth 39,276 Lives

If a picture is worth a thousand words, this one is worth a thousand lives. In fact, it is worth 39,276 of them. I was accused of “cruelty porn” by a commenter on Facebook on a post it accompanied about Why PETA Kills, my book, which I was offering for free in light of my victory over them in a court case. She objected specifically because I’ve posted it before, writing that while she agrees…
