SUMMER 2017: THE GREAT OUTDOORS

 (Cabot Expedition, 2017)

We have many things to celebrate this month - summer has officially begun and we are only a few days away from Canada’s 150th birthday. That’s why this month’s newsletter is filled with stories all about the great outdoors - whether that means enjoying your own back yard or exploring the unique beauty our great country has to offer.

Below, we highlight our incredible next expedition and introduce you to one of our participants as she prepares for her upcoming adventure. We also recap the highlights of our annual charity golf tournament and feature our new partnership with the Ted Rogers Scholarship Fund.

As always, on behalf of True Patriot Love, I thank you for your generous support and wish you and your family a wonderful start to the summer season and a happy Canada Day.

Warm Regards,

  CEO, True Patriot Love

TPL SCOTIABANK EXPEDITION: CABOT PARTICIPANTS RETURN HOME!

(Cabot Expedition Team, 2017)
The first leg of our expedition series is officially complete! Cabot participants returned home from an intensive kayaking adventure out east, facing some of the most extreme weather conditions Newfoundland has experienced in the past 42 years. Despite these obstacles, our participants persevered and worked together to conquer the challenges at hand.

Catch up on the latest expedition news coverage here.

SPONSORSHIP SPOTLIGHT: SCOTIABANK

Scotiabank is Canada’s international bank and a leading financial services provider in North America. Scotiabank is dedicated to being a socially responsible corporation and showcases this through their charitable donations and the active volunteerism of their employees.

Since 2012, Scotiabank has been the presenting sponsor of our expeditions and we're proud to partner with them again this year for the TPL Scotiabank Expedition: Best of Canada Series.

To date, our expeditions have engaged 30 ill and injured soldiers and 50 business leaders from across Canada, raising $5 million in funding for programs that address the challenges of Veterans’ transition, reduce the stigma of mental illness, and create lasting mentorship opportunities for soldier participants.

The success of these expeditions and the impact we’ve made within the military community would not be possible without the support of our generous sponsors like Scotiabank.

PARTICIPANT SPOTLIGHT: GILLIAN RILEY

Gillian Riley is the Executive Vice President of Canadian Commercial Banking of Scotiabank. As a member of the Executive Management team, she is responsible for the overall strategic positioning, growth, and direct management of several key integrated business areas that provide financial offerings. Gillian is an active business and community leader and in 2016, she was recognized as one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women by the Women’s Executive Network (WXN).

Gillian will participate in our upcoming Mackenzie Expedition, departing on July 9. She, and her expedition
teammates, will hike over the Coast Mountains of British Columbia, white-water raft down the Bella Coola River and paddle ocean canoes, retracing the historic last leg of explorer Sir Alexander Mackenzie’s first crossing of North America.

"I feel honoured and privileged to take part in this life changing experience. I keep thinking about all those Veterans who pushed themselves to the limit in order to ensure the safety of Canada and the safety of others. I hope to contribute to the expedition and come away with experiences I can share with my children and those around me - motivating people and raising awareness of the challenges our Veterans face. I believe it’s through the diversity of thought, experience, and approach that will make the expedition a success - I’m looking forward to that learning and sharing.”

TOGETHER WE RAISED $230,000 FOR VETERANS’ TRANSITION!

(Magna Golf Club, 2017)

June 19, 2017, marked TPL’s 7th Annual Les Shaw Invitational for Heroes. Our charity golf tournament brought avid golfers, philanthropists and TPL supporters together to raise much needed funding and awareness for Veterans' transition.

Together, we raised an incredible $230,000, which will go toward programs like Veterans Transition Network (VTN), Prince’s Operation Entrepreneur (POE) and Outward Bound Canada (OBC), that support Canadian Veterans and their families as they transition to civilian life.

INTRODUCING THE TED ROGERS SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Ted Rogers Scholarship Fund was created in honour of Rogers founder, Ted Rogers. Rogers is a company that not only believes you can find potential in just about anyone and just about everywhere, but also that education is key to developing that potential.

Launched in June 2017, the Ted Rogers Scholarship Fund will
honour 150 youth from across Canada who have gone above and beyond within their community to make a difference, by providing them with post-secondary scholarships.

Every bright student deserves access to a post-secondary education, but many Canadian families face barriers when sending their kids to college or university. This is why TPL is proud to partner with Rogers, through the Ted Rogers Scholarship Fund, to support five young leaders from the military community to help them reach their educational aspirations.

Together, TPL and Rogers are breaking down the barriers that interfere with youth pursuing a post-secondary education.
