Most politicians would not hesitate over taking a telephone call from the most powerful woman in Europe.

Not so EU chief Jean-Claude Juncker, who rejected German chancellor Angela Merkel’s attempts to reach him.

Admittedly he was in a press conference at the time, standing alongside Slovakian prime minister Robert Fico in Brussels.

After finishing a speech, he reached into his blazer pocket for his mobile phone, apologising, saying the call was from his wife.

As Fico was pausing, waiting to speak, Juncker added: “No, it [the call] was from Mrs Merkel”.

It prompted chuckles from Fico, Juncker – who last month admitted he did not own a smartphone – and the assembled journalists.

It comes after reports Merkel was angry with Juncker after details of a Brexit dinner in London was leaked to the German press.
