In an apparent case of class discrimination, a man was denied entry into Kolkata’s upmarket Quest Mall because he was wearing dhoti and kurta. The incident happened on Saturday when the guest was stopped by the security guards outside the mall.

The incident came to light after a Facebook user Debleena Sen, who accompanied the guest, along with another friend posted about it on her timeline.

In the post, she mentioned that the guards first stopped the guest who was wearing dhoti. Later they allowed his entry only because the guest questioned them in English. In the video, the guest is seen asking the reason behind not allowing his entry but the mall officials seem clueless.

When they took up the matter with the senior management team of the mall, they were told that they do not allow people wearing dhoti and lungi due to ‘security reasons’.

“When we questioned, we were taken to the office of a senior management official (a lady). When I started recording the incident on my phone, she asked me to stop immediately. This is when we decided to leave the place,” Sen told ScoopWhoop News.

“We are perfectly okay with the guests being physically frisked and bags being checked for security reasons. But this is completely ridiculous,” she added.

Sen said that the mall staff didn’t try to contact them after they left the place.

“We don’t want any sort of apology. We want them to change this system where people aren’t allowed to enter for wearing traditional clothes.

ScoopWhoop News tried to contact Quest Mall but didn’t get any response.
