The UK government will match public donations to Mary’s Meals’ Double The Love campaign, up to £2million, until March 1.

Hillpark art teacher Julie MacRae, who co-ordinates fundraising for the charity, is thrilled that the pupils’ efforts will go even further.

She said: “We are really going to be putting a lot of focus on the Double The Love campaign this Valentine’s Day.

“This year we are going to make little heart shaped biscuits, with messages and we will focus on the Double The Love campaign during that.

“They could be for anyone  your mum, dad or your granny. It’s a way to show people that you care. We are even running a delivery service to make sure everyone gets their Valentine’s treats.”

Since the start of the Double The Love campaign last December, the school’s Mary’s Meals group have been fundraising to help impoverished children in Zambia.

Third year pupil, Liam Gouby said: “When I joined the school’s group I wanted to help children get fed and have good health. I am really glad that I got involved.”

Classmate Nathan Moore added: “As the children receiving Mary Meals are of similar age to us, their situation really hit home for me.”

Mary’s Meals currently provides life-changing daily school meals to more than 1.4 million children in 18 countries around the world.

It costs just £13.90 to feed a child for an entire school year through Mary’s Meals.

Over the years, inspirational pupils at Hillpark, who sponsor Kasupe school in Malawi, have raised more than £15,000 for Mary’s Meals.

Mary’s Meals has been working in Zambia since 2014 and is now reaching more than 119,315 children there every school day.

The country has high rates of malnutrition, poverty and food insecurity, with more than 360,000 primary school age children out of education.

By providing one good meal every day in school, Mary’s Meals brings hungry children to the classroom and makes it possible for them to attend school regularly, so they can gain an all-important education and look with hope towards a brighter future.

Hannah Stewart, Head of Fundraising at Mary’s Meals, said: “We are so grateful to the pupils and staff at Hillpark High School for all of their amazing fundraising over the years and during our Double The Love campaign.

“They are helping to bring so much hope and joy to school children in some of the world’s poorest communities.

"During Double The Love their amazing efforts will go even further, with their donations being matched by the UK government, up to £2 million.

"That means a donation of just £13.90, with UK government matching, will feed two hungry children in school for a whole year.”

“The pupils at Hillpark always come up with such creative and inspirational ways to fundraise for Mary’s Meals.”
