Sex.
That’s all it was supposed to be. No strings attached, no feelings, no heartache.
But if I thought Sean Riley would be content having only parts of me, I was dead wrong. His persistence wore me down and I found myself in the one situation I was trying to avoid.
Little does he know a life with me will lead to nothing but disappointment and heartbreak. He’s a good man and deserves everything I can’t give him. Not because I don’t want to, but because I’m unable.
Pushing him away in the beginning was to protect me, now I’m trying to protect him as I gear up for the fight of my life.
A fight I could lose.
Getting into a relationship was my risk, but as things get worse, I’m not the only one who will have something to lose.
I just hope it’s worth it.

I picked it up to have a light and funny read, but I got much more.
The story has much depth and a very important message.
It’s beautiful and heart-breaking. It has very likable characters, sweet funny moments, sexy times; but almost unexpected twist at approx. 50% brings it on another level and makes you, as a reader, think about life and its value, about that every day we have should to be appreciated, that every person we like/love needs to be cherished.

I will spoil much, so if you want to go blind into the story, please do it.
I would recommend this book to every woman.

It deals with .

--- !!!SPOILERS!!! ---

The 1st half of the book is light and funny. Paradise to the readers with similar tastes as mine: strong sassy heroine, hot likable hero, funny banters; she pushes away & he chases -> my favorite scenario *grins*, safe (hero pursued heroine for over 2 years; despite her pushing him away he didn’t give up. He tried to date OWs, but as I understood, he didn’t have sex with any OW after he met the h).

Some of you may see the heroine as childish and spoiled, I didn’t. She had her reasons and even if I don’t agree with everything, I was on her side.

Amazing hero. I liked him from the 1st till the last page. He was a bit full of himself at the beginning, but I could overlook his façade and saw a sweet decent guy, who was over the moon with his girl.

Though I really enjoyed the light part of the book, I was totally overwhelmed with the twist in der middle of it.
During an annual check the heroine was diagnosed with cervical cancer. This young 30-year-old woman full of life and joy was devastated. I was totally on her side with all her doubts and decision not to tell everyone until the diagnose was confirmed. I understood why she didn’t want to move in with the man she loved, why she didn’t want him to see her sick and weak.

The only one time I was mad at the hero - when he misunderstood her decision to delay their move-in together, but after she told him about the cancer he was 1000% devoted to her.

I saw many men leave their wives and families when women got sick. I saw so much cowardness in a real life, that this hero immediately became a perfect example of an honorable man who put all the a§§holes to shame.

This man, oh, this man. I adored him! A person needs to be very strong and have a big heart not to run away from such horrible “challenge”.

This man is my epitome of a REAL MAN.

God, I cried so much. Her pain broke my heart; his devotion gave me a hope.

I would rate this book with 10 stars only for these lines!

“I’ll be less of a woman.” This girl is constantly breaking me, splitting me wide open. The vulnerability in her tone is so raw and innocent, as if she believes this will really change who she is.
“No, Paige. You’ll be everything you are now, but more.”
“How’s that?”

“Because you’ll be a survivor.”

Their fight was long and not always successful; her 1st treatment didn’t kill the cancer and the poor girl needed a surgery. Full hysterectomy. Above lines were spoken before the surgery. God, my heart broke for this woman.

And this incredible man was every step of her fight by her side. There were moments I almost howled.

But there is a HEA. Sweet epilogue full of joy and hope.

Was this book perfect? Nope.
I won’t dwell on things I didn’t like, because the story was perfect the way it was.
We all have flaws, we all make mistakes, and I hope all of us would be that strong as these two amazing characters.

I’m not the sweetest reviewer on GR; I have my b*tchy attitude and I’m not ashamed to admit that I judge and despise many tropes in romance.
But I always honest and I always speak from my heart.
Even if it sounds cheesy, I really mean it.

I wish you all to stay healthy and strong!
I wish you all to live a very long beautiful life and to enjoy it every day.
And if the life throws you a challenge, DON’T GIVE UP!

Fight and survive!

What a nice surprise this book turned out to be.  Thank you Alex for discovering this hidden gem of a book.  You sure knew how to pick them.  Although, I get to marry Sean first. LOL

Sean our H is one relentless guy who chased our heroine for two years with his bad pickup lines and silly jokes.  He would go above and beyond to make her happy.  " I'm a stubborn and determined bastard.  I never take no for an anseer and I have a whole slew of funny jokes.  But most importantly, I never give up on the people I love. "

We seriously need MORE Heroes like him in fictional world and even in the real world.  His patience and his unconditional love.  The way he supported her through her ordeal was amazing.  He won an awesomeness award for his efforts.  And can I just say, I love his jokes (corny or not)  They made me smile.

Paige our heroine is a smartass, brave and scared of caving to the attraction thinking that it's all about the chase for him.  I wasn't happy when she didn't tell him her condition immediately but I understood.  When she fought the ultimate war with this disease *insert middle finger for this sickness*.  I was rooting for her and crying too. (weak heart, I know).

My favorite is their random questions and facts.  Of course, their banter is also great.

"I feel like my womanhood has been stolen from me.  Is that stupid?"

"No, but I can relate.  You've had me by the balls since day one, so I know the feeling."

I would have wanted to read more about their future with their twins (greedy much?)  but I am still one happy reader that enjoyed this one very much.

**4.5 Sean Riley stars**
And because of him I clicked 5 stars!!

For me the hero made this book 110%, I loved how he fought for her, how he took care of her, how he loved her even though she kept pushing him away he was always there.

We need more heroes like this one.

I understood why the heroine pushed him away but after a while that pushing got old really fast for me and she started to annoyed me. i want to slap her to see reason. Lol

My Rating:

4.5

Favorite Quotes:

I’m Ella’s favorite uncle… There aren’t a whole lot of guys who would perform the Frozen soundtrack for a fourteen-month-old with as much accuracy as me.

Scarlett is a serial dater. I don’t think I’ve seen any of her relationships last longer than a couple weeks. Her philosophy is if it’s not perfect in the beginning, it’s bound to be a disaster in the end.

It’s official; she’s castrated me and turned me into a chick. I’ve never second-guessed myself so much in my life…

The urge to look it up on my phone has my fingers twitching, but I know that’s a terrible idea. No matter what symptoms you have, the internet will always have you convinced it’s a tumor and you’re going to die.

You’ll be everything you are now, but more…. Because you’ll be a survivor.

Paige, you’re everything to me. You make air worth breathing, sights worth seeing, and life worth living.

My Review:

Paige was gun shy and skittish about relationships and gave the sweet, sexy, and tenacious Sean such a hard time. Paige was a prickly character, hampered by excessive pride, terminal stubbornness, and a smart-ass attitude. Her obstinacy was ridiculous and self-defeating. But regardless, Sean was smitten and seemed practically obsessed with her, and as they had mutual friends, he continued to pursue her while being just a few steps back from junior stalker status. She has acted disgusted and uninterested in his quips and pickup lines laced with crude and sexy innuendos, although she was similarly attracted. Sean was adorable and while his lines were cheesy, they also made me smile. Once Paige expelled the stick she had wedged up her behind, I enjoyed this couple immensely with their playful teasing, amusing banter, and their game of random facts and random questions. Everything was going well until devastating news was received.

The storyline alternated between amusing and clever humor, sizzling sensual scenes, and an angst fest; so in essence, it was an emotive roller coaster - but well worth the ride. Rachael Duncan has mad skills and provided an insightful, heart squeezing and engaging story. I have enjoyed all the books in this series and look forward to many more, as there are several remaining friends to examine and dispatch to the land of happy ever after.

At Her Own Risk is definitely a roller-coaster of a story, filled with lots of emotions, heartache, sadness.....but most of all love. Sean & Paige meet a few years back and have an immediate attraction to one another, but it takes them awhile to give into their feelings for one another. Sean wants more than just friendship with Paige, but she is hesitant to give it a chance. Yet, he finally wears her down as they start spending a lot of time together and she decides to give it a shot. Right after they start moving forward, Paige gets some unexpected and heartbreaking news.....and then tries to start pushing him away. And I could totally understand Sean's frustration. When you love someone, you love them unconditionally.....and I don't know if Paige had ever truly felt that in her life. I'm sure it wasn't easy for Sean, but he stuck by her through everything.....even when a lot of people might have given up.

Definitely a super-emotional story, and you might want to have tissues handy. This was the first book I had read from this author, and it was truly enjoyable.

At Her Own Risk by Rachel Duncan is an extremely emotional book that brought me to tears on more than one occasion, tears and feelings of empathy toward Paige and Sean's situation. This book begins with the feisty push and pull of Paige and Sean who clearly want to be in a relationship with each other, Sean putting it all on the line and Paige holding him at arms length to protect herself. Once Paige finally lets her walls down and really lets Sean in, the unthinkable happens and the reader watches her build her walls back up one brick at a time. Sean refuses to allow her to push him away and although it pains him for so many reasons I cannot reveal, he is harsh with Paige about their reality, which is something she really needs. Some will dislike this story for the content alone, and for that reason I hope that putting personal feelings aside will allow a reader to read this emotionally charged and amazing story of love and hope for the future.

What an emotional story on so many levels. At Her Own Risk by Rachael Duncan is one of those books that’s hard for me to review for a couple reasons. 1) The review has to remain a little vague to allow the reader to experience the events on their own. 2) I was Paige a few years ago and therefore have a little difficulty understanding some of her decisions although I’m sure some women make similar choices, however, I can’t wrap my head around it.

I am 100% on board with the beginning of this story. Paige Stewart is a strong, successful woman. She puts a lot of time and effort into her career until she finally realizes that she will not move forward in her current position, and therefore interviews at another company. She knows her value and goes for what she wants. Paige is also a woman who has boxed herself into a corner in personal relationships. There might be some background information in the previous “Risk” books about her friends that shed light on her actions. In this book, I don’t get it completely except there is at least one guy in the past who did her wrong. It is his fault that she plays the “push all men away” game.

Sean Riley is determined to wear Paige’s resistance down. (I’m sure there is more about their fun encounters in the previous books.) I really like Sean. He is a funny, loveable, and loyal guy. His typical modus operandi is a love ‘em and leave ‘em guy, but Paige is different. Sean is eternally hopeful that he can break down her walls. When she applies for a job at his the company he sees the perfect opportunity and jumps on it. Just when he is making headway, and he sees a future with Paige, life happens and the push-pull begins again.

It is this life event that takes me out of the story a little. As I said earlier, I know what Paige is feeling. I’ve been there, and know that family and loved ones are the greatest assets to get through all the downs, depressions, and negative feelings. Even when we experience the story from Paige’s point of view, I want to slap her. I couldn’t relate to Paige’s decisions especially after Sean shows her time and time again that he has her back. I’m also disappointed that her friends didn’t talk her decisions through with her. For me, she comes off selfish even though that is a harsh adjective for what life is throwing at her.

I want to be clear -- Rachael Duncan tells a captivating and emotional tale. The book is well written, and the characters are developed and complex. I don’t understand a lot of decisions that people make in real life, so I don’t expect to understand all decisions made in a fictitious world. I can tell you I cried sad tears because I know Paige’s experiences intimately. I remember it well. I also cried happy tears because Sean won my heart on more than one occasion.

At Her Own Risk by Rachael Duncan is an excellent book. I highly recommend it with the warning that tissues will be needed at certain points. The epilogue is beautiful and made me smile for Sean and Rachael. I want to read more about Sean’s family and will go back to read Calculated Risk , Marcus’ (Sean’s Brother) story. At Her Own Risk is a standalone book with crossover characters from other books by Ms. Duncan.

WOW! I had no idea what a powerful and emotional book I would be reading when I first began this book! Paige has been pushing Sean away for years, but one steamy encounter changed that. Now, she has outright been avoiding him, but Sean, being who he is, doesn’t give up easily…thank goodness! With persistence, he gets her to first agree to a friends with benefits arrangement, then he continues to make his way into her heart. After proving his feelings to her, he has made it beyond her strong walls of defense, and she agrees to “trying” for something more. However, when her world is turned upside down and her very life is on the line, she begins to rethink everything with him, but he won’t let her go without a fight! This is the beginning of a romance about unconditional love and letting those you love take care of you!

As I wrote earlier, this is an emotional love story. The title was perfect! Paige is always in control and independent, not really taking risks, especially with her heart. Somehow, Sean gets past her defenses, and she is willing to take a risk on him. Of course, she wants to revert back to keeping her heart safe, but later when she receives some life-threatening news, it’s not her heart she is trying to protect but Sean’s. I just kept hoping she would let herself finally lean on him and trust that he would always be there for her. Because of her fighting spirit, I just fell in love with her. She was incredibly brave, and she definitely was someone I would want as a friend.

And Sean….oh my, he certainly knew how to make a woman go weak in the knees, even with his corny pick-up lines. I couldn’t help but love him. As Paige has decided to risk her heart, he has done the same. He has never stayed with a woman because he had never found someone who challenged him like Paige. He has completely lost his heart to her, and he is in the relationship with her for the long haul. He will definitely need to continue assuring her of that. He had a non-serious side that kept Paige from running at times, but when he needed to, he showed his serious side to be there for the woman who stole his heart. He truly was the perfect book boyfriend…he had it all….good looks and an even more beautiful heart.

This book had it all for me. There were times Sean would lay me out with his corny jokes, but he made my heart pitter patter whether he was whispering naughty things in Paige’s ear or being by her side at her absolute worst. It illustrated the importance of friendship and support, not only in good times but in bad times. Most importantly, it was a book about hope and unconditional love, and making sure you show others you care about how much they mean to you every day! Just be prepared for tears and laughter, but those are my very favorite kinds of books! This is a perfect book from the beginning until the very end!!!!

Thank you Rachael Duncan for giving Sean and Paige their own story as I am still recovering from the steaminess of this couple when you first introduced them to us in Calculated Risk. Although a standalone, in At Her Own Risk, we become entwined in Sean’s and Paige’s lives, as they both realize the connection they share, even though Paige continues to fight it. Paige Stewart is sassy, independent, determined and a feisty woman, who is focused on her career, but also happens to be a natural beauty. Then there is SEXY Sean Riley, a very successful business man, who by his own admittance, is a man whore of some sorts who too shied away from relationships. But there was something about this girl. It was certainly a pursuit from a cat and mouse perspective which provided that somewhat frustrating angst that we all claim to love, but swear under our breaths when actually reading it. Well, you have that for sure and I can’t lie, Paige becomes frustrating as hell as she fights this so natural attraction...”My heart beats a tiny bit faster and my palms get sweatier. I’m quickly reminded of the way his piercing blue eyes stare into my soul.” You, as the reader, are screaming, frustrated as hell, PAIGE…break down that wall which is so confining. BUT when she does, real life takes over and boy, does it. Life can be cruel and it HITS and HARD. Just when things seem to be going great for Paige and Sean they are blasted with some devastating news. It is an emotional rollercoaster without a doubt, but you as the reader are so invested and so in love with this couple you fight through the tears and welcome the laughter, the friendships’ comradery, and the true companionship. There is so much more to this emotionally driven love story and is so deserving to be read!!!!
Rachael Duncan, thank you again for writing a story about real and raw love that we can throw ourselves into and relate to on many levels. At Her Own Risk provides that perfect read. We all love laughter and smiles, but at the same time, love an emotional story which makes us cry, get angry to the point of throwing things, but in the end, the reader is completely satisfied with the outcome as things happen the way they happen. Totally a great read!!!! Have tissues, as you will need them!!!!

At Her Own Risk by Rachael Duncan is a beautifully written and emotional story. I found myself in tears a few times, and sympathizing with Paige and Sean's situation. One minute I'm smiling, then my smile turns into a frown, my happiness was gone I'm now completely heartbroken. Rachael hits you with a WTF moment and you're left wondering where the story will go from here.

Paige is a sassy, feisty, stubborn woman. She's afraid to commit to a relationship for fear of rejection and getting her heart broken. She keeps herself guarded and her walls up. Sean wants her any way he can get her, even it means a friends with benefit relationship. The two have a push and pull type of relationship. Sean knows what he wants and it's Paige he will stop at nothing to have her. He can be equally stubborn as her. Little by little Paige and her walls slowly start to come down and she let's Sean in.

Just when things between the two are going good, BAM their lives are completely shattered when the unthinkable happens. Paige is left building those walls back up, she doesn't want Sean involved. Sean is not about to let Paige push him away at a time when she needs him the most. He's determined to prove to her that he is not going anywhere and will stand by her no matter what. Sean is hurt with the way Paige has been shutting him out, he finally speaks up and uses some hurtful words towards her. Words that may hurt her but in fact are ones that she needs to hear. I'm being vague in my review I don't want to spoil it for the readers. This is a story everyone should read, you can't help to fall in love with both characters and hope that in end they get their happily ever after. At Her Own Risk may be fictional, in reality it happens one to many times to people.

description

I was looking forward to getting my hands on this one, because while it can be read as a stand-alone I met the characters in another book. Paige and Sean have known each other for some time. He has come at her with corny lines and she has blown him off at every turn. Until the inevitable happens, but it was supposed to just be that once. A time to get all of their frustrations out and move on, at least that is what Paige thought.

Sean is a fun character. He is loving and quirky and literally has the patience of a saint. Paige on the other hand is kind of stand-off-ish and has some pretty impenetrable walls. After a lot of convincing she is finally okay with more than once, then more than twice and then her world gets thrown upside-down and she doesn't know what to do.

I will say I had a hard time with Paige. She was so closed-off it made her almost unlikeable at times. She did eventually grow on me but it took some time. This book had a lot of "stuff" going on too. It was emotional and dealt with some tough substances. But through it all Sean was a trooper and he really made this story for me. He was just someone I was able to connect with and really enjoyed his antics and his heart. Overall I liked this story and thought that subject matter was dealt with gracefully. While it seemed like it took a long time for it to resolve, that is just how it is in in real life too. I have been a fan of this author for some time and can't wait to see what she comes out with next.

Paige didn't do relationships because she didn't want heartache. Sean Riley has been interested in whatever he can get with Paige. Sean has been interested in Paige for a while and is very persistent in his goal to get the girl. Paige finally caves but only agrees to no strings attached, just sex. But Sean isn't content with this plan and is working on wearing her down. Paige fears that she will be nothing but a disappointment to Sean. Is Sean worth the risk?

This was a great book. I love Sean and Paige together, if only Paige will take the risk. There is a back and forth rhythm going on throughout the book. She gives in and then gets clear headed and tries taking steps back. It's a roller coaster of emotions. I laughed and I cried. I read it cover to cover and was hooked. I love some of Sean ideas to get closer to Paige without her realizing that she is giving into the idea of them dating or being in a relationship with him. I really loved this one. I am rooting for these two and hoping Paige realizes that Sean is worth the risk. One click this one ASAP!

Slightly spoiler-ish...

This is not the first story I’ve read with this type of scenario and because it has such an emotional subject matter, I try to be slightly objective about the power of the romance without that scenario involved.

Paige is always pushing Sean away, but he persists and is truly amazing with his devotion to her. The ending is heartwarming and it’s definitely an inspirational story worth reading.

However, without that particular scenario involved, I would say that the chemistry, passion and banter is not 5 star worthy. My main complaints are that the sex wasn’t very steamy, and the conversations or witty banter between the two was vaguely mentioned more than it was actually on the page.

The story as a whole is beautiful and quite the emotional ride, it just didn’t push my buttons the way Who We Are by Nicola Haken did.

5 fabulous risky stars

Wow, what a fabulous and very emotional read At Her own risk was. This author has become a one click author for me this past year and I have to say once again she did not disappoint with her latest release. There is just something about her writing style, her fabulous cast of characters and their stories that pulls me in every time and makes me fall so in love with her books.

Paige Stewart has become a challenge for Sean Riley these past two years. The moment he met her he knew he had to have her. Finally he has started to break down her walls and she has given into the sexual tension that has only been building the past few years. Paige was hurt badly once before and refuses to let that happen again so she agrees to a “Friends with benefits” arrangement with Sean that only grows into something more until the point where things are great but a turning point in their relationship appears and changes everything for them both.

I absolutely loved Pagie and Sean's story, it was fun and flirty but also very emotional. So many times I found myself cracking up at Sean and all his jokes/ one liners. Sean was sweet and caring and a bit corny at times with his lines he used but I couldn’t help but fall in love with this sometimes quirky yet sexy guy. I also loved Paige’s character, she was such a strong female lead and we really got to see her strength get put to the test in this story.

I must say that when we Paige and Sean come together, it was hot. But I also loved that even though these two had a very physical relationship, it didn’t totally feel like it was only physical. I also loved that with how physical things were between them, this book didn’t turn into sex scene after sex scene or overdone. But I also must add that this author also had me in tears with the very emotional side of this story . I loved their connection and loved the dynamic the author slowly built with their relationship and I loved that it got put to the ultimate test. And most of all, I loved how real this story was, the character connection, the storyline, it felt so very real to me that at times this book took me on an emotional roller coaster

Overall this was such a fabulous story in such a great series that I have come to truly love. This one can definitely be read as a standalone but this entire series is a must read, great stories and really great characters and with each book it only keeps getting better. So if you are looking for a story that will test your emotions but also have you cracking up, even at the emotional times, this is an absolute must read!

“You could destroy me.”
“Or I could love you.”

When—not if, since At Her Own Risk is a book you should be reading—you pick up Rachael Duncan’s latest book, please make sure you also pick up some tissues. Lord knows you’re going to need them.

I’m sure, from my opening statement, that you can infer that this book is something of a tear-jerker. It touches on an emotional subject matter, and does so in a way that doesn’t shy from reality. Nor does it lessen the feels, make them merely fodder to drive a romance. Instead, At Her Own Risk brings the romance into the larger picture, making it easy to connect with these characters, and with their story.

That’s not to say I didn’t, at times, want to throw my Kindle. Paige and Sean’s relationship was born on shaky ground and that meant there were moments where I struggled to understand Paige’s reasoning. I wish we could have delved a little deeper into her motivation—because with the delicious Sean being essentially the perfect book boyfriend (bad jokes and all), it hurt me when he hurt. Having said that, I have to respect and admire an author who takes risks (surprisingly, that was an unintentional title pun), and Ms. Duncan does that with her stubborn-to-the-point-of-frustration heroine. Also, with the way she directs the obstacles that stand in the way of Paige and Sean’s happily ever after.

It’s a hard fought, well-deserved happily ever after they seek. It brought tears to my eyes on more than one occasion—from both the beauty of this author’s words and my own experience with the subject matter—and had I been reading in private instead of surrounded by gymnastics parents, I’m sure those tears would have spilled over.

Not that watery eyes are the only thing on the agenda here. Especially in the beginning, At Her Own Risk exudes charm and humor and feel-good-ness that’s evident in Sean’s pick-up lines, Paige’s deep friendships and, of course, the push/pull of Sean and Paige together. And though I feel like the ending could have benefitted from a little something more, the way Ms. Duncan brought everything together left my red eyes and aching heart on the right side of happy. Which is why, when you read this book, you’ll finish with not just a pile of used tissues, but also a sated heart.

“There she is.”
“Who?”
“The girl I love.”
“I’ve always been here, Sean. I just needed you to help me find her again.”

I thoroughly enjoyed this story!

Sean and Paige have this connection that can’t be ignored, but oh does Paige try. Paige tries her hardest to protect her heart from Sean, but eventually her walls that she’s worked so hard to build start to crumble down. Just watching these two together pulls at your heart strings.

Life has a funny way of showing you just how strong you are.

Just when things are starting to look promising between Paige and Sean, Paige has something unthinkable happen. Though Sean has tried his hardest to keep Paige from building her walls back up and fights for what they’ve slowing built. Paige fights just as hard to push him away. You start to see a side of Paige you don’t care for, but you also have to put yourself in her shoes, would you do the same if this happened to you? This helped be better understand her choices, even though I wasn’t fond of them.

Hard as he might, Sean has a breaking point just like the rest of us. After trying to give everything of himself and being pushed away, Sean finally tells Paige how he feels, and doesn’t sugar coat anything. Though this is something she needs to heard, what will she do with it?

I feel this book is more than just fiction. These things unfortunately happen to people way to often in the real world, and I think that’s what helps readers to relate. I do wish I read the other books in the series to see if there is more to Sean and Paige’s story, there were parts I felt like I was missing bits and pieces of their past with each other. I would definitely recommend this story to anyone, and would highly suggest to have a box of Kleenex near by! Great job Rachel Duncan!

I don’t intend to break your heart, but you forget your feelings aren’t the only ones on the line.

Holy Hell, damn that Sean Riley, he just goes straight to my heart.

Okay so reading the synopsis I figured this was going to be a one sided story, boy was I WRONG! This was a dual POV and let me tell you. Sean’s POV totally sucked me in.

Paige Stewart and Sean Riley have been dancing around each other for a few years. Sean’s brother dated and is now married to one of Paige’s best friends which means they are constantly around each other. They sexual tension between the two is crazy and Sean has been chasing Paige since the day he met her. Finally Paige gives in and the two decide on a “friends with benefits” type of thing.
What got me with this book was Sean; this guy wanted this woman, he pursued her relentlessly, he cared about her, he LOVED her. There wasn’t a time in this book where he didn’t make his true feelings known. While it may make him sound a little like a wuss, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m so sick of reading books where the guy wants the girl but he tries to hold back. Sean said “to hell with all of that.” This guy put his heart on the line and never took it off. Of course a curve ball is thrown at the two of them, and it comes in the form of Cancer. Sean is not only fighting Paige to make her see how much he wants her but now he’s fighting her to allow him to fight with her.
This book was sweet, funny, and emotional. I’ll admit there was more than one occasion when I had to blink back tears. I don’t typically appreciate it when book makes me want to shed a tear but this one I didn’t mind.

I don’t know that I would say this is a series but there is at least one other book (featuring Sean’s brother and his now wife); but I don’t think you need to read that book to appreciate or follow this one...at least I didn’t. I do intend to go back and read that one though (Calculated Risk). The whole Charlotte and Scarlett (two of Paige’s friends) confused me a bit (I couldn’t seem to keep them straight) but that wasn’t a major factor.

Overall, a good read that I finished in one day.

Very conflicted with my feelings for at her own risk overall I found it quite enjoyable , I haven't read the other books before this but I wasn't lost just felt like I was missing something . Rachael Duncan did a fantastic job on bringing in the emotions was very close to tears on some parts . Adored Sean he puts up with a lot from the heroine and I applaud him with his patients , kindness , and dorky pick up lines always find a hero that can make me laugh supper attractive . Paige now here is were the conflict comes from the way she fights the attraction she feels for the hero was truly frustrating , she did grow on me but it took me awhile . They were great together with their foreplay banter witch was funny while being hot . IT was really cool to read about characters that are mentioned in past stories ( will be reading them soon ) and I can not wait to read the next one the author gives us a little tease of what's to come so I'm ecstatic .

This is an epic read. I loved it! It has the right amount of emotions, romance, and humor.
Paige doesn't want a relationship. She knows that they only lead to heart break, and chaos in life. She is just fine living her life in a way where she knows her heart is safe. She is an independent woman and relationships scares her. Sean likes Paige a lot, from the moment she rejects him he wants her even more. He is relentless and bent on changing her mind about relationships, and most importantly about him. He has no clue why she wants to put him in 'bad guy' category, but he is going to prove her wrong. Soon she will realize that they both need each other as much as they need to breathe. One thing is for sure, the chemistry between them is explosive. They just can't stay away from each other, no matter Paige's insecurities and Sean's fears, they are just drawn to one another. But will they able to overcome all their difficulties or is their relationship doomed before it even began?
This is amazing book, I quite enjoyed reading about two of now my most favorite characters. Paige & Sean deserve happiness and this book is all about them finding it. I'd definitely recommend this book to every contemporary romance fan out there. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did. But the Rachael Duncan is one of my favorite authors who never disappoint me. ;)
P.S. I received a complimentary copy of this book.

Paige doesn't even try to get wrapped up in relationships, and she feels like her life is fine the way it is. So when she interviews for a new job, things quickly go to hell in a hand basket when her interviewer is none other than Sean, the man she finally let herself hookup with. He wants nothing more than everything with her, but she's too scared to put herself out like that. So he tries to get her to agree to a friends with benefits situation until he can keep her from running. When he has enough, he lays it all on the line, she finally decides to take a chance. Just when she's beginning to believe in them, life kicks her, and now she's going to protect him from losing something, so she pulls away, but will Sean go down without a fight?! At Her Own Risk was off the charts filled with emotional angst that had my eyes leaking more than once. Sean and Paige had a bumpy journey that was heart wrenching to experience, and experience it I did, as I felt all of the feels along with them. I really enjoy Rachael Duncan's talented writing style a lot, even though I'm a newer fan. And while I became fully immersed into this story, it took me a bit to really warm up to Paige, as her issues with the push and pull got to be too much at times, IN MY OPINION. And that is the only thing that kept it being absolutely perfect to me. I cannot wait to read what's next out from this amazing author, and HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

I feel conflicted on what I should and shouldn’t say about this book and for me that is not a very comfortable place to be. I usually find that I can come down on one side of the fence or the other but the characters in this had me wondering WTF a few more times that I am normally comfortable with.
I liked Paige in the main but that didn’t mean that there weren’t times that if I could have gotten my hands on her I wouldn’t have been ready to throttle her, she was so stubborn.
Sean was a tad more straight forward but again on occasion I wanted him to bring out all of the alpha tendencies that I think he was keeping a reign on. I didn’t like that on occasion he felt slightly tethered.
The angst and attitude between the two of them made for very interesting reading, they certainly had enough going on to ensure there was never a dull moment and I thought that the author was cleverly creative in the deployment of not only the most subtle humour but a bucket load of romance.
I loved the realism that the author brought to the story, she took their issues and gave them time to not only explore but expunge…she gave Paige and Sean the opportunity to open their hearts and minds and in turn that allowed them the opportunity to force their way into my heart.
Overall this was more than I thought it was going to be, it was a super read!

It is proven that reading is healthy and does the body good. It keeps our minds sharp and helps us relax. Reading also makes sure we feel things that we may have thought we'd never feel. At Her Own Risk, was that book for me. It made me laugh and swoon and then tore me apart and lovingly put me back together again.

I have never read a book quite like this before. It was beautiful in so many different ways and I can't get it out of my head. This may be one of my top ten reads so far this year. Yep, it was that good.

I love stories that stretch what we are use to and give us something new and unexpected. There's so much that happens in this story that I never expected and that's one of the reasons I loved it so much.
It drew me in and never let me go. A book like that is one you know needs to make an appearance on your favorites shelf.

In the beginning, I wasn't really sure how this book would go. It seems like I knew what would be next and it would end quickly because I assumed it was that "predictable." I was never more happy to be proven wrong. This book is anything, but predictable!

I cannot tell you much more without giving things away. But buy this book! Read this book! You will LOVE this book!

Duncan wows with At Her Own Risk, her new emotionally gripping new release. At Her Own Risk brought out all the feels as I read taking me on a rollercoaster of emotions that ranged from fun, witty laughs to heartbroken fear.

Paige is feisty, stubborn and holds so true to who herself. She’s taken herself off the market in hopes to save her heart from being broken. Until Sean. Sean will take whatever he can get from Paige even if it’s just friends with benefits. Paige runs you through the ringer. At times she can be quite prickly letting her pride get the better of her. Once she FINALLY came around and got her head out of her nether regions, the story became quite playful with their teasing, banter and games. Then just as your heart soars, Duncan takes you by the gut as you fall along with Paige and Sean from the devastating news.

Duncan’s rollercoaster storyline ranged from clever, witty and fun to angst driven and heartbreaking. With every stroke of her keyboard Duncan managed to wring out emotion after emotion until the very end. This series has been one that I thoroughly enjoyed from the beginning. Each friend/character has been equally explored by Duncan always promising yet another amazing story. I can’t wait to see what she has for us next.

☆☆☆☆ 3.5 STARS ☆☆☆☆

At Her Own Risk was fun and emotional. Paige and Sean story might put some readers in tears, so be ready for that. I can’t say too much without ruining the story, so all I can say it every reader will have to read this story to really feel the impact that these two will have on each reader. I do love Sean Riley, he was persistent when it comes to winning Paige’s heart. The man will stop at nothing to make her see what is right in front of her. Sean’s sexy, smart and a great guy. I enjoyed their cat and mouse chase. Loved when Sean started to break down Paige’s wall little by little. This story has a beautiful epilogue that makes everything worth it.

5 out of 5 stars!!!!!!!

This book tore me up emotionally in the worst kind of way -- AND I totally loved it! Every page was better than the last. Watching Paige accept Sean and Sean fall harder and harder for her was such a (to be cliche) romantic sight!

Tears made it hard to read more than a few pages, but I still can’t believe how lucky I am to have been a part of their journey on paper. It was emotionally exhausting in the best way. I can’t believe the relief I felt after finishing this story.

I liked Paige and her fierceness, but Sean was the perfect book boyfriend. He was sweet, sexy, caring, nurturing, funny and so much more that you couldn’t read his story and not fall in love with him!!

I don’t think there is a way for Ms Duncan to improve, but with every book she proves me wrong!

At Her Own Risk was a beautiful & emotional story. This book is Sean Riley and Paige Stewart’s story. I am completely in love with Sean Riley. I love his quirky sense of humor and how much he loves Paige who fought hard not to love him. Paige had some devastating things that happened to her and both her friends Lydia, Charlotte and Scarlett were there for her as well as Sean!

Just in case you had the same question I did and wanted to find out the Series order here it is.

Calculated Risk – was Lydia & Marcus’ story
Risk and Reward – was Charlotte and Nate’s story
At Her Own Risk – is Paige and Sean’s story
4th book will be Scarlett & Jonathan’s story

I love the women in this series they are so supportive of each other. I love At Her Own Risk and this series. Now I am anxiously awaiting book 4. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. I give At Her Own Risk 5 stars.

4.5 Sexy-Sweet and Emotional Stars

Can we first talk about this cover? I absolutely love it! Just gorgeous! I was super excited to read about Paige and Sean's stories since I have kind of become invested in all the characters from the "Risk" series, but I do think this can be read as its own stand alone.

I absolutely love Sean. Usually, I tend to find myself relating to or rooting for the heroine in the story, but in this one, I was all about Sean. He was so determined, dedicated and completely head over heels for Paige. He would walk through hell and back for that girl, even though she tried, several times, to push him away. He was committed and just a really good guy. He has this huge heart coupled with his sexy good looks and I couldn't help but swoon.
