NRL Referees Helping Junior Canberra Referees Junior referees in Canberra were given a treat when NRL referee Henry Perenara visited local grounds to meet them for part of the NRL’s Back to Junior’s Round. Perenara was joined by fellow NRL referees and touch judges Dave Munro, David Ryan and Russell Turner as the quartet gave advice to their junior counterparts. One referee who got to learn from Perenara was 14-year-old Cameron Scott who couldn’t believe it when he saw the NRL official watching his game. “I was happy, but I couldn’t believe it,” Scott said. “I heard that he might come around, but I wasn’t really looking for him. Then I saw him at halftime, and he was watching my game.

“After the match, he was giving me compliments and telling me things I should work on and what I do well. It made me feel really good about what I do.” Refereeing isn’t Scott’s only involvement with rugby league as he also plays for the Gungahlin Bulls. However, wanting to be involved in the sport even further, Scott decided to take up refereeing. “I was looking to get a bit of money on the weekend and have some

fun with the game I love,” Scott said. Canberra & District Rugby League Referees Association (CDRLRA) Executive Officer, Chris Nightingale believed it was important for young referees like Cameron to learn how to reach the highest level of officiating from people like Perenara. “It’s important because it can give them an idea of where their career can go in the future if they put the time and effort into their own refereeing career,” Nightingale said. “They can see from the grassroots level that they can make it to the elite level.” If you would like to get involved with refereeing, please contact Chris Nightingale via executive.officer@canberrareferees.com.au.

Austbrokers Canberra Raiders Cup Round 12 Wrap The battle for fourth place took another twist, while Yass took another step towards securing a finals berth in Round 12 of the Austbrokers Canberra Raiders Cup. Queanbeyan Blues 46 (Tries: J Stein 2, J Baker, M Cullen, F Fanifo, S Rutland, T Stevens, T Reudiger; Goals: T Campese 7) d Gungahlin Bulls 16 (K Madden, R McGinn, B Scholes; Goals: L Withers, D Williams) The Queanbeyan Blues claimed a 30 point win over the Gungahlin Bulls to continue their perfect season. Queanbeyan raced out of the blocks as forwards Jake Stein and Josh Baker opened the scoring. With a 22-6 lead just after halftime, the game was halted when Jake Scholes had to be taken to hospital with a neck injury – thankfully after some scans, Scholes was discharged. The Bulls fought hard after the delay and scored after David Williams drew in the Blues winger before passing to Kane Allan who crossed the line unopposed. However, Queanbeyan regathered their focus by scoring three tries in 20 minutes to seal the win. Yass Magpies 21 (Tries: S Davis, J Collins, A Swaffield; Goals: S Davis 4; Field Goal: M Lawrence) d Woden Valley Rams 20 (Tries: J Hickson 2, C McGhie 2; Goals: C McGhie 2) The Yass Magpies have claimed their fourth straight win to move four points clear of 4th placed Tuggeranong. The match was close throughout as the teams traded blows before Yass claimed a 1210 halftime lead. Woden took the lead straight after the break thanks to Cleveland McGhie before Yass fullback Andrew Swaffield managed to bring the momentum back in Yass’ favour. Having drawn against the Rams earlier in the season, a similar result appeared to be on the cards but a Matthew Lawrence field goal in the dying moments of the match ended up being the difference between the two sides. The defeat sees Woden remain in 7th, three points behind the Bushrangers.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos 44 (Tries: L Dumas 2, G Afemui, J Kelly, N Ngere, J Simbiken, L Spaander; Goals: J Essex 7) d Belconnen United Sharks 22 (Tries: M Butz, B Nangati, S Tatipata, K Vikash; Goals: D Eason 3) The Queanbeyan Kangaroos bounced back from their defeat against the Blues last week to claim a comfortable 44-22 win against the Belconnen United Sharks. Fullback Luke Dumas scored two tries as the Roos scored seven tries against the Sharks. Having lost to the Roos 50-10 in the last meeting between the two sides, the Sharks showed plenty of improvement as they scored four tries themselves.

The Kangaroos remain second on the ladder while the Sharks stay in last place. Tuggeranong Bushrangers 30 (Tries: W Tauti 2, A Topou 2, J Pollard, J Mitchell; Goals: J Mitchell 3) d Goulburn Workers Bulldogs 22 (Tries: M Worboys, P Cooke, T Cornish, D Hately; Goals: C Hart, B Hewitt 2) The Tuggeranong Bushrangers have returned to the top four with a win over fellow finals aspirants, the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs. The Bulldogs started the brighter of the two sides as Matt Worboys crashed over the line to score before the Tuggeranong captain, Josh Mitchell struck back with a try of his own. From that point on, Tuggeranong dominated the rest of the half as they scored three tries to take a 20-6 lead at halftime.

Goulburn regathered after the break knowing that a win would create some distance between them and the chasing pack and tries to Tyler Cornish and Pat Cooke gave them an opportunity. However, John Wesley Tauti secured the win for Tuggeranong in the dying moments with his second try of the afternoon.

Blues Continue Perfect Season The Queanbeyan Blues have continued their perfect season by cruising to a 38 -6 against the second placed Yass Magpies. Having narrowly missed out against the Blues earlier in the season, Yass came to Seiffert Oval on Friday night with hopes of claiming a win.

“Queanbeyan are a good side, they have plenPhoto: Michael Thompson ty of good players and good experience,” said Yass hooker, Allie Beck. “I think Queanbeyan just came out strong for their home game…they played well.” “I think we just need to get our heads back into it and come back next week. Hopefully next time we play them we come back stronger. It was a close game last time and we just need to get back there.” The first fifteen minutes were a tough opening as each side were relentless in defence but errors in attack prevented either side from gaining momentum. However, Blues fullback Cailah Welch broke the deadlock when she beat the Magpies defence with a right foot step to score.

That try opened the floodgates as the Blues scored two minutes later through Yasmin Meakes when she ran through a gaping whole in the Magpies defence. Welch continued to threaten the Yass defence as she gained plenty of meters from kick returns and Yass were unable to stem the flow of tries as Queanbeyan scored three tries to take a 24-0 lead at halftime. A halftime break didn’t slow the momentum the Blues had gained and Regan Hart scored the first try of the second half when she dived to plant the ball in the corner. Yass almost scored their first try of the match shortly later when TaylaJayne Chapman was unable to hold onto a cut out pass which was just beyond her reach. The Blues juggernaut continued and Meakes sealed her third try of the night with a wonderful solo effort. After weaving her way through the Magpies defence and only with the fullback to beat, she put her foot on the accelerator run on the outside of the fullback before coming back in field to score under the posts. The Magpies managed to pile on some late pressure on the Blue’s defence with repeat sets and were rewarded for their efforts when Allie Beck darted from dummy half to catch the markers off guard.
