The attorney for Grammy Award-winning singer Yvonne Marianne Elliman-Alexander and her husband Allen Bernard Alexander, who pleaded guilty after drugs found in their belongings, said he is hopeful that the pair will be sentenced to probation.

“We’re very optimistic because they had completed everything that they were assigned,” said attorney Mike Phillips, after Monday's court hearing.

A sentence of probation would mean they won’t spend any more time behind bars.

They face a maximum of six months in prison, Assistant Deputy Attorney General James Collins has said.

Alexanders charged with drug possession

The Alexanders were charged in August last year with possession of a Schedule II controlled substance and possession of a Schedule II controlled substance on board an aircraft arriving in Guam. Court documents state after they landed in Guam, officers at the airport found 3.3 gross grams of suspected marijuana in Allen Alexander’s belongings and 3.5 gross grams of crystal-like rocks and a glass pipe in Elliman-Alexander’s belongings.

The pair were on Guam to perform for a benefit concert for the Mount Carmel School.

They took plea deals and each pleaded guilty to possession of a Schedule II controlled substance as a third-degree felony.

Performed about 120 hours of community service in Hawaii

The court granted their request to leave Guam and return to Hawaii to care for Elliman-Alexander’s ailing mother after they pleaded guilty.

The pair have been checking in with probation through email, the probation officer said.

After Monday’s court hearing, Elliman-Alexander said she and her husband performed about 120 hours of community service while they were in Hawaii.

“Get help and when you’re feeling stronger, help others,” Elliman-Alexander said. “I think that’s why we did so well because we did help other people.”

Collins said he wasn’t ready to proceed with sentencing Elliman-Alexander and Alexander on Monday and needed more information. Judge Vernon Perez scheduled the sentencing Tuesday morning.

Phillips said Elliman-Alexander and Alexander plan to leave Guam on Wednesday.

Elliman-Alexander performed on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, which won a Grammy for album of the year in 1978.
