The member for Benambra said he was concerned the trademark may disappear with the closure of the Kiewa Murray Goulburn factory.
“I’d like to see Murray Goulburn at least maybe look at selling the brand, because it is a good brand,” Mr Tilley said.
“It’s like Tim Tams, it’s like Vegemite and all those other things that have been sold off. The Kiewa brand we know as locals is a ripper.”
In announcing the shutdown this week, Murray Goulburn stated it was “considering the future of the Kiewa Country brand”.
The Liberal MP also suggested fresh uses for the factory should be considered.
“Orbost had a butter factory, it’s now a brewery,” Mr Tilley said.
“There have been a number of butter factories that were milk plants that have changed and transitioned.
“Let’s see if the government will support other industries coming into the area.”
