Reconnect and the Nambucca Valley Community Men’s Shed have joined forces in an effort to address the shortage of accommodation options for young people in the shire.
The proposal is to source caravans (road worthiness not necessary) that can be refurbished to create a suitable space for a young person in need of accommodation outside the family home.
The vans will be parked close to supported accommodation (in the family’s backyard if appropriate), giving the young person support and stability to help them complete their schooling.
The Men’s Shed will provide the labour and skills for the refurbishment with the option for the young person to get involved if they wish.
Men’s Shed coordinator, Stuart Holmes, said the caravans provided a better option than residential homes because they gave the kids their own private space.
“We have three blokes who have put their hands up for this and they will be helped by others as needed,” Stu said.
“The Men’s Shed is all about community connection – this project supports the community and also the guys who work here, making connections all the way round.
“We need vans that are a solid shell that we can work on (we are willing to pay if necessary). The vans remain the property of Reconnect and will be returned to the pool of vans after the young person has finished.”
Nambucca Shire Council has donated space for the storage of the vans.
