Description

Instrument Fingering Charts Foldable MINI BOOK for 10 Beginning Band Instruments

Each Instrument Fingering Chart folds into an 8-page Mini Book that serves as a useful graphic organizer to help students learn the first seven notes on their instruments by identifying which keys/valves should be pressed and where to draw the corresponding note(s) on the music staff. Providing students with a fun visual aid that can be colored in and folded into a book not only helps them learn how to play their first notes but also supports learners with multiple modalities. Plus it’s a fun, hands-on way for kids to enhance their visual/spatial skills and demonstrate their creative/artistic side!

Instrument Fingering Charts are provided for the following 10 BEGINNING BAND INSTRUMENTS:

1. Flute

2. Clarinet

3. Alto Saxophone

4. Tenor Saxophone

5. Trumpet

6. Horn (in “F”)

7. Baritone/Euphonium (Bass Clef)

8. Trombone

9. Tuba

10. Glockenspiel (Bells)

By completing this fingering chart mini book, the students will learn about the treble/bass clef, music staff, note names, accidentals, ledger lines, as well as the correct keys or valves to press (or slide position for trombones).

Each note is also associated with the corresponding solfege syllable and Kodály/Curwen hand sign in the key of concert B-flat. I'm a huge fan of using solfege with my beginners as it makes teaching instruments in multiple keys a breeze, especially when rehearsing in mixed groups!

You can get my SOLFEGE FOLDABLE MINI BOOK (with the Kodály/Curwen hand signs) by CLICKING HERE

Without using solfege, I would have to say "C instruments play B-flat, B-flat instruments play C, E-flat instruments play G!" However, with solfege, I can much more easily say “Band, play ‘mi’ and now ‘do’,” etc. It’s much faster and easier for them to follow! It also makes it easy to improvise warm-ups and it’s a fantastic way of getting students to watch you! You can even use both hands and create warm-ups in two parts.

It’s hard to witness younger students getting frustrated when they struggle to play the right notes in the first few weeks of the learning process, but having an activity like this is an alternate way for them to demonstrate their commitment to your music class and feel successful. It’s also a great form of written assessment for you.

The COLOR versions are more attention-grabbing, but if one has to make large quantities of B&W copies, the grayscale versions look great as well and provide students with an opportunity to color and personalize their books.

This product is aligned with the National Core Arts Standards! Specific standards met are listed within the resource.
