POLL SHOCK

Nats hail sensational new survey which predicts Scotland WILL back independence after Brexit goes ahead

Research signals a split would push voters to back a breakaway from the rest of the UK

NATS have hailed a poll predicting Scotland will back independence after Brexit.

The shock survey signalled a split from Europe would push voters to back a breakaway from the rest of the UK.

Research carried out by pro-Europe group the Best for Britain campaign revealed a 52/48 Yes/No divide if Brexit goes ahead.

And the findings revealed the Euro split would also lead to Northern Ireland quitting the UK and joining with Ireland instead.

The SNP’s Europe spokesman Stephen Gethins welcomed the survey and claimed support for independence was now “polling at historic highs”.

He said: “With more people believing independence will benefit the country economically, the numbers being convinced by the arguments for it are on the rise.

"As the deeply damaging consequences of a No Deal Brexit become clearer, support for Scotland’s ability to take its own decisions in an independent country will only grow.”

The survey of 1,022 Scots by Deltapoll found that if Brexit is halted, indy support would be 43 per cent for Yes, 47 per cent for No and ten per cent undecided.

That would mean a Yes/No split of 48/52 when the don’t-knows are stripped out. But if the EU break-up happens, 47 per cent say they’d back indy while 43 per cent would vote against.

With the ten per cent of undecideds removed, the Yes/No split becomes 52/48.

The figures for Northern Ireland show Brexit would lead to just 39 per cent voting to stay in the UK.

Best for Britain boss Eloise Todd warned leaving the EU could “shatter the Union altogether”.

Labour MEP for Scotland Catherine Stihler claimed independence would be “even more catastrophic” than quitting Europe.

But Scots Tory MP Colin Clark said: “It’s time to focus on securing the best deal.”
