Hello and WELCOME back to the latest Boss 101 update for friends and fans. Thank you so much for joining us again.

Let’s get down into it!

So, we are basically down to little knick knacks to round things out. I recently wrote up a summary of where we are with the game. It was written to establish exactly the mindset we are using to wrap up Boss 101 and bring you our best. I’ll put a few parts of that below so YOU TOO can share some behind the scenes action.

What’s Left in Boss 101 Update

The actual amount of work is easily explained. It’s only polish. HAAAAAAAAA!!

That can mean a lot of things but mostly we are talking about taking all the systems we already have in and features we’ve already done and making sure it all works together as bug free as possible. That is really about it.

This means crash bugs obviously but it also means things I call ‘connective tissue’ between systems. This is stuff that is not TECHINCALLY a bug but SHOULD be in the game since it helps link two systems together. This can mean a UI addition, a new VFX or sound to help the player understand something. It can mean a lot of things and none of them are actually hard to do or take much time. The more we do the better off we are. The balance is stopping when it’s feature creep yet still recognizing when things are needed.

While we are avoiding feature creep things have been added. The defining choice for any add to the game at this point is “Does it help make the game experience that is ALREADY IN better?” examples - Does this UI help explain to the player a system we already have? Does this change to the guns make the combat system more versatile for all players? Etc.

The big things ahead are playthroughs and soak tests to clear out any possible day one grade A bugs. These are those things which would pop up in a typical player playthrough. This is stuff like testing guns, effects, rewards and in game progression. Kinda tedious if the truth be told but it has to be done.

Simply put….

The amount of time remaining is sufficiently small we are focused on shipping a high quality project. That will do more for us, for our fans purchasing Boss 101 and our future than ‘hitting a date’. Our aim is to hit a high quality bar and ideally the rest will take care of itself.

Ok – today’s inside look at the SUPER BOSS WARP GATE!

This is a little gem from when you are taking on big bad bosses near the end. Here’s the process of taking an existing art asset and re-purposing it for another use. In this case we grabbed a regular warp gate and made it SUPER!

Hello and welcome back to the latest Boss 101 update! Hope you are doing excellently today!

Wanted to peel back the curtain again for those interested in how we make our magic behind the scenes.

Gun Store Extra Info

So check this out. We have our gun store and there is an option to see some extra helpful info about each of the guns you are preparing to buy. By hitting a button you can pop up a small panel showing you the ammo loadout and extra stats about any gun.

We were talking about the gun store (and all the stores) recently. Now that we are near the end of the development of Boss 101 you can imagine it’s easy to look back and see all the amazing things we could, should or MIGHT have done. Specifically the stores in Boss 101. As they stand they are the product of a lot of testing, updating and rejiggering to give you the player the best information. The process was pretty organic (like most of the game’s development) and the end result certainly has the feel we wanted.

In fact, one nice thing about the Command Center design aesthetic was the choice to make it a repurposed, built up place. The guys are using alien tech and creating things as they go. A lot of the machinery and layout are the result of ‘as needed’ design choices.

Development Update – Let’s talk about Progress!

First off we have the THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT DURING BOSS 101's development. It's been a long road and we are heading towards the finish line. We could not have made it without your encouragement! Thank you!

“So, when will Boss 101 be done? You said you were aiming for Early 2017 and it’s Summer now!”

That’s a legitimate question and the answer now is the same it's always been. The ONLY reason for any delays in release is simply us polishing and bug fixing. At this point we are close to final. The last 4 months have been a LOT of quality of life fixes for YOU THE PLAYER! If you add in the general big fixing then it’s not too hard to imagine where the time has gone.

I know we spoke about this before but a refresher on Boss 101 might be in order. Let’s review what exactly is happening in our day to day.

Behind the Scenes
We work pretty much all day, every day on Boss 101. This is mostly about playing, testing and looking for ways to make the game a clean and fun experience for you. For now that means playthroughs to see if we are hitting the goals of a fun, cohesive experience. We are not looking to have an endless development cycle but at the same time ‘hitting a date’ doesn’t get us much if the game has bugs or obvious usability issues (bad interface, crashes, etc).

Money and Funding
We are ENTIRELY self-funded and working off our OWN DIME. We have taken no one else’s money, we are beholden to no publisher at this point nor did we do a Kickstarter. The idea was to make sure we could create a game for you on the terms we felt best about. This would allow a level of organic development. Aspects of the game could be discovered and worked on as we found them.

The general idea someone can sit in a room and write up a 300 page design doc covering all aspects of a game before development starts is pretty outlandish if you think about it. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try but the meat of development is, well, during development. Ideas come into play as you insert new mechanics. Things that didn’t seem like they would be much fun become VERY fun and things you were sure would be amazing are, perhaps, less than stellar.

The point here is we can take advantage of all the ebb and flow of a natural game development cycle. All this means Boss 101 is really its own game and has its look and feel. Whether you like that or not is another question BUT we can assure you this is something we are working with all our might to make SUPER ENTERTAINING AND FUN FOR YOU!

The Team
We have three people. That’s not an excuse but a fact. We are dedicated to Boss 101 and pore over the game daily but that’s the size we have. Would a bigger team get things done faster? Perhaps. Would they be better? That's debatable.

I've worked on and managed teams close to 300 people in size. That is a ton of people and many moving parts. You can imagine it is like herding cats to keep the team on the same track. We don’t have that issue on Boss 101. We’re on the same page, working towards the same goal at all times. Again – the proof will be in the release but this is something we feel you will directly benefit from.

Release Date News
So, we are still in the 2017 release window and if truth be told we expect you to have the game in your hands in months, not years.

No one, please hear me NO ONE READING THIS wants the game to ship more than us. We aren’t holding onto Boss 101 like some overprotective parent. We’re gamers and we know what we demand in a game. When Boss 101 hits the quality bar we demand and has the fun we want it will ship!

Check out our three years of updates nearly anywhere we post regularly. You can see we work all the time and ideally it shows the progress and love we are putting into Boss 101 FOR YOU!

Hello and welcome to the Boss 101 weekly update!

We have something to talk about we all love! ACHIEVEMENTS! You love to get them and we love to give you achievements for YOUR HARD WORK IN BOSS 101!

You know your pals here working on Boss 101 made sure you have cool Steam Achievements (which will translate to console achievements when the time comes). Did you also know we have in game quests which have their own achievements and rewards? Some of these dovetail with the main game achievements but some are simple as collecting a new pet. You know what? We want to celebrate EVEN THOSE!

Mini Quests and Achievements
We created these little popup to tell you about adopting a new pet in the Command Center or maybe winning a new hat. Let’s look at the basics here.

We setup a structure with the achievement plate and allowed for text identifying the achievement name and reward name.

The deal is we wanted to have some fun with the reward system and instead of just dropping a little “NEW” icon on the menu we went a little further and put some oomph into the presentation. For us, it's work like this which helps bring you a really fun experience and ideally enjoy the game a lot more.

Work continues towards the final release. This week we look into quality of life interface improvements for the hat store. This is a great example of the little things we look to help YOU with when it comes to playing and enjoying Boss 101.

The Hat Store

As you might have guessed – we have hats in Boss 101. A lot of them. A little over 250 hats and counting. For you that means we have hats for sale, hats you can earn via a quest, hats you own - and on and on. There are a few things to note here, the most important to us being you quickly getting the information you want when you’re in the hat store. Here’s what we see happening and what we are doing.

A Store

Yep, this place sells hats. So you needs to see prices, abilities and any relevant shopping information when you are making your buying decision. This is what the place started as and it evolved from there.

A Dressing Room

The hat store is one of the places you can equip your character in hats they own. This is a function closely tied to the purchasing of the hats. We made a decision earlier in development to allow the player both a Costume and an Ability hat for maximum fun.
- Costume Hat: what you character outwardly looks like
- Ability Hat: What abilities from which hat do you want to use. This allows you to LOOK like you want and have the POWERS you want without tying you down to one or the other.

Some of the hats are only available after completing some missions or tasks. We use the hat store to show you the known requirements and, where possible, we show you the progress you are making

That is a LOT of stuff going on and we KNOW it. We added a couple quick ways in the hat room to sort the categories YOU want to see as well as jump quickly through the hat collection.

In conclusion

As you can see, these are the little things we are working on to make the game as fun as we can make it. Do we need to do every little thing like sorting hats into groups or allowing quick movement through your hat collection? Technically no but we thing it MAKES YOUR GAME BETTER!

As you know –bugs and polish continue. This week we have a question from a fan and process ideations to share so let’s get cracking!

Upgrade Room Process

So the upgrade room has all these sweet little stickers to show various upgrade levels. They help with indicating what you are buying by giving a sense of purpose. We’re going to peel back the curtain right now and show you why things are the way they are and how we got here.

Let’s start with the basic stuff. Here’s a bounty sticker and how it’s assembled from various parts. As you might guess these parts are for interchangeability. We shuffle them around for different upgrades and we get to keep that jazzy layout. SAVES TIME TOO!

When you are in the Make a Boss the color of the money is determined by your bounty level. (and corresponds to the dollar sign icon color)

How’s the game going? GLAD YOU ASKED!

We get this question a lot because people care and we know you do too! You know you can always head to the Steam forums to speak with us directly. We try to get around to each and every question!

We had a fan ask us (for all the right reasons) about shipping the game NOW and maybe adding in little features after to round things out. Now I would NOT assume this person was asking to rush or crap out the game. I think the intent was to ask about perhaps holding out on some non-essential tidbit or something and just hitting the fun basics. Well, the deal here is Boss 101 has GOT to be our best. You deserve no less and most importantly we need to be true to OURSELVES and BRING YOU OUR BEST.

I gave a long answer to their question in the Steam Forums but I wanted to reiterate one of the general points. It was about something like a quicker release schedule and working in some neat things AFTER we ship.

What about Early Access or major updates to complete unfinished features with patches, etc
Generally speaking the above solutions are basically making you buy an unfinished product. That is not our goal. We haven’t ever had nor currently have plans to do any of those. We want you to have a finished game at $9.99. That might seem a little lofty but how many games have you seen lately which seem to have been rushed to hit a release date? I can think of a few. I can also think of a few games that while they seem bug free also seem feature light. We want YOU to LOVE Boss 101. Ideally, we want you to think “I got a FRICKING AWESOME DEAL and this game is FUN!”

While we know we have a savvy fan base following our development we can’t say everyone would be understanding of an early or unfinished release. You can check YouTube or Steam reviews for many examples of devs getting pummeled by effectively shoveling a game out early. People don’t like that. We don’t like that. We’re looking to avoid it.

Does that mean Boss 101 will be a flawless masterpiece? Hmmm, maybe not but let’s let time be that judge. What we CAN tell you is Boss 101 will be the best game we can possibly deliver given our time, money and resources. We want the BEST for you.

Come on people – we’re doing this not just for you but for us too. When you plunk down your $9.99 we want to knock you OVER with the fun of Boss 101.

Hello and welcome back to the Boss 101 weekly update! Glad you are here and hope your weekend is off to a great start!

Wanted to take a detour to review a few of the COOL THINGS we are putting the game for you. We’re still working on the polish and cleanup and in the meanwhile there’s an opportunity to check on some of the little touches you will get in your Boss 101 experience.

The Arcade Room

So, we have Boss 101 but did you know we also have a full featured arcade cabinet with some sweet games you can play on? You did? Well did you know those can be played for rewards, in-game achievements and a ranking on the Steam leaderboards? YOU SEE HOW WE ARE!?!

You got that right folks – we have an arcade cabinet with three games you can play to pass the time and maybe get some bragging rights among your friends. Let’s go over what you can expect then shall we?

Just go to the arcade machine in the Command Center and you can access the arcade games directly!



From there you can select a game (don’t forget to read the instructions)


So we have three games from there. Let’s look a moment at each of them and what they are about.

First up – Tank War

Bring your twin stick aiming skills into TANK WAR – you have one life and unlimited time. Blast as many enemy tanks as you can before they get you!



Second – Break Down

This may or may not seem like a game you know but I assure you – YOU MAY BE RIGHT! We added a couple Boss 101 touches, cute-d the thing up and added CRAZY powerups to keep things moving! Bounce the ball, break bricks and advance!



Third and certainly not last – Mazard

Battle the evil maze wizard and his minions in the maze of death. Look out because some of the enemies are invisible. You gotta use your radar to find them. One life and that’s it! How far can you go!!?!?

Polish, cleanup and bug fixing continue! We’re three people working as hard as we can FOR YOU! Boss 101 is heading your way as fast as we can make it. Some good news is we are getting ready for a friends and family release for further gameplay testing! YAY!

Thank you for joining us THIS WEEK to talk about the LORE and backstory for Boss 101.

Tanya wants to know if you are ready for some battles in Boss 101



Let’s get rolling with some of the basic history of the Boss 101 universe. This is a place of high technology and sentient robotics. As you might imagine from the title of the game – the boss robots are in charge of a large part of the known universe. Earth is part of their federation. Thing is – Earth is sorta viewed as a rural area of the universe. Not a whole lot of technology and it’s really not much of a threat to the ruling robots.

When the game gets rolling you are introduced to Max (from Earth) and Steve (formerly of the Robo Alliance). From here on out you learn about the Robo Alliance, the bosses, the Earth and what exactly is happening to free Earth from the Robo Federation. Now, we realize there may be a few of you who don’t really care for a huge backstory and Boss 101 will allow (where possible) you to zip ahead in dialogs or skip things if you just want to play. As much as possible we designed the game to allow a basic level of fun without the need to know everything going on in the story.

Did you know you bring stickers and toys back from each round to give to Rob? Well you do and he loves them. Here are a few being handed to Rob after hard earned battles!



Visitors in the Command Center

So you win a battle and end the round. Occasionally you get a notice a new visitor arrived in the Command Center. This normally means you get a few things. One you get to make a new buddy. Two most all visitors bring you a pet! Yay! Last, you will receive a little bit of info about what’s going on in the universe by checking out the info they bring with them.

Passports and The Professor’s Wiki

These are a few of the ways we are adding in details about what is going on with Boss 101. You can always check on the Professor’s Wiki and read the latest entry. He gets updates every time a new person, pet or event happens so it’s worth your while to give it a look at least every now and then.

The Passports – all the visitors in the Command Center will be carrying their galactic passports. These are the main way beings travel about the Robo Federation and use the system of jump gates. On these passports you can see where people are from as well as some character notes.

Mostly – we want you to play the game like YOU want to play it. We know there are a few of you who are excited about the whole Boss 101 universe and we will be giving you as much info as we can about it. Boss 101 (the game) is ideally just the first in the series and with YOUR KIND SUPPORT we want to continue building on this start to bring you more.

In fact I did, it is the exact same, a randomly generated boss and a small guy with a talking jetpack(or something) fights them, but I don't remember when I saw it, nor where, I think it was a flash game of some sort though...

Hello and welcome back to the Boss 101 Weekly Update!

Quick update about the release and progress towards it!

This week was mostly bug fixes and a lot of sound system polish. There’s a long story in there but the summary is – we found a way to improve the sound and music in the game and implemented it. The end result for you should be a better aural experience.

Beyond that we continue with polish and testing. We are also beginning to do limited testing with close friends and fans to help identify and clean out bugs.

Overall progress is good and we are jamming along 24/7 on bringing you Boss 101!

Lore and world building continue

So when we were putting together the characters for Boss 101 we wanted to add little personality traits and identifiers for each of the people you will meet. Part of that implementation is the passport system and the Gopher Wiki system. These are mostly for people who might be interested in the background and history of things in the game.

A key point for us in doing this is to make even the READING of the stuff fun for you. This means an interesting presentation of the info and as much as possible making the information itself fun and meaningful to read.

Enter the Boss 101 Galactic Horoscopes!



Ok – we thought it might be nice to do something along the lines of a horoscope or a ‘blood type’ guide. Way back in the day I remember reading things like the Street Fighter II manual and seeing Guile had Type O blood or Ken had Type B. Now to me, as a kid, this didn’t mean anything since I wasn’t familiar with blood types as they relate to personalities. HOWEVER, I did think it was super cool they included this. Basically, even not getting the whole picture gave me the sense there was a lot going on with these characters I didn’t know.

So here we are with Boss 101. Well, we added a horoscope of our own and gave each of the characters you meet a personality type. Now, we have this entire behind the scenes system of why each person is classified the way they are, it has to do with age, personality and function in the game. Beyond that though we added this little icon to each of the passports as some sort of galactic guide.

Of course we like to think that each character is much more than just a horoscope rating but we do think it’s fun to have these little touches in the game. Heck we use them ourselves and it does help with the writing and conceptualization of the character.

Also – look how dope those little icons are! SO CHARMING!

Thank you for joining us again as we talk this week about the Boss 101 Steam Achievements! Exciting stuff right?

Steam Achievements

So you know we have spoken about the various in-game alerts for things like minor quests and story related activities. Well, a few of these dovetail into the main game achievements you can get. We have a list below of all the main achievements as well as the name of the achievement.

As you might guess the goal of these is to give YOU some fun challenges as you are playing the game. There are a few about collecting things and to get some of them you will end up doing a little dive into the story and background we have in the game. Mostly though – we aimed the majority of them at the core game loop with a bunch of hidden ones for people who want to explore all the aspects of the game.

Things like the hat collection and gun collection are not small things to do as we have nearly 260 hats in the game and about 50 or so guns. You do get some freebies but the rest you will have to earn. Ideally though – that will be enjoyable for most of you (at least we hope so). Every single hat and gun is crafted to be a cool addition to your game. It’s pretty exciting for us to be heading into the finish since we want to know how YOU will feel about Boss 101.

I need to take a break here and tell you about two people who are working with me to bring you the best game possible. They are none other than Manon and Joshua. I know I have spoken about our team in the past and you might guess I have the utmost respect for their efforts and commitment in bringing you Boss 101.

You already know we are the people who MOST want to see Boss 101 come out. It’s in our best interests to get you the game sooner than later and every day it’s not in your hands is a day we aren’t generating income from the release.

The thing is, and this is the point I am driving at, we want you to have the best game possible. That gets a LOT of lip service in the game development community. Along with the words “Metroidvania” or “Souls-like” you probably hear “bring you the best” just as much. The final proof will be in the shipped game but we are indeed committed.

This take a lot of effort and willpower and I can tell you right now if it wasn’t for those two the Boss 101 you would be getting would be vastly different and in many ways a much poorer game. These two have gone all in and together we have a game we are really proud of. Again – I know you might hear this little line a lot but we are living our dreams.

I guess I’ll leave it with this. It’s not been an easy road since we effectively did everything the ‘hard’ way. We didn’t take shortcuts on quality. We WERE efficient but we didn’t skimp on the extras we wanted to give you. The game is about high value for you the player.

I was speaking with Manon earlier this week and we were talking about how none of us expected the game to go past ONE year much less turn into THREE years. Think about that. Sounds crazy right? Now go back and look at our development blogs from one year ago, from TWO YEARS ago. See that game there? That’s the one you would have gotten at the time. It would have been OK I guess but it wouldn’t be THIS Boss 101 and honestly this is the BEST one we can give you.

There’s not much time left in the polish and bug phase. We expect to announce a date soon and WE THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE. We know you want the game. We know you have been waiting. WE KNOW YOU MIGHT THINK US CRAZY TO PUT ALL THIS EFFORT IN.

Really though – it is what we need to do to feel good about shipping Boss 101.

Ok – onto BOSS INTERACTION!

We always enjoyed the idea of a little boss interaction with the player during the battle. It’s something we built into the bigger boss encounters. The general idea here is we are always looking for ways to entertain you. Occasionally as you battle the boss will blurt out a little phrase while he’s attacking. It’s mostly a nod to the idea the bosses are like you. They are screaming at their opponent as they look for the best shot or try to get in the winning blow. Check out some of the possible things a boss might say as you whale away.

On Screen Warnings

As you may know already we have a series of status effects in the game that can trip up your fight against the bosses. Of course we provide you with PLENTY of counters for any move a boss can make but we are always accounting for the times when you may get caught flat footed. For those times we have on screen warnings to tell you what is going on and what you need to do.

In the great effort to clean up and polish the game we have been re-examining assets we made one, two or even three years ago. THREE YEARS! Holy moley!

The status arrows and warnings were done a while back and when we were tuning the game we wanted to add a little punch to them so they stood out and you could see them a little better. Let’s take a look at some of the before and after shots so you can see what we are talking about.

First off is the basic struggle arrow. This is what you would get when you are frozen or webbed in the game. It is designed to inform you about how to deal with your current status. We have a countdown that speeds up if you wiggle your control directions. Classic struggle stuff. Check out the before and after. You will notice things were scaled up and we added a nice glow around the edges to pop it off the screen a little better.

Some quick development updates and then onto the main development blog!

Very Super Early Beta Testing has begun!

Yep, you heard right – we have started to send out Steam keys to selected groups for play testing feedback. If you think you are on that list and haven’t gotten a key – please be patient. You can always mail us at hello(at)donleytimefoundation(dot)com if you have any questions.

General feedback is positive and we’re doing gameplay tweaks to make things smooth for the end user. All in all though – no major hitches and we’re moving forward with wrapping the game up.

Making an In-Game Wiki

You know about the Professor’s Wiki in Boss 101! Originally this was the place for neat lore about the various people you meet in the game but has expanded a bit.

You can see here we have the main Command Center and the WIKI itself.





Each page here ORIGINALLY started as a straight piece of art displayed all at once. This art included the words, images and placement or everything. This was my personal idea (me being Tim) and let me assure you it was a terrible one. HAHAHAHAHA! Joshua had a much better idea about how to do this. Basically, do it the right way (like almost everybody else would). We broke the page into pieces, art, words in an XML file, animations, etc. All this is created separately and then assembled in the AMAZING editor that Joshua created for our game.

How to Make a Hat in Boss 101

With all the talk about hat contests we wanted to revisit how we make hats for Boss 101. In the three plus years of development a lot of ideas have come and gone but hat making has stayed the same. Why you ask? Well, we hit upon a pretty simple way that works well for us though YOUR mileage may vary.

Boss 101 has limited animation on the main character. That’s as much a decision based on team size and time as it is on style. One of the side effects of this was making costumes or hats is MUCH easier. We basically use hat stickers to cover up the main character. This can be a partial or a complete cover but the result is the changing of the appearance.

Another nice thing is we can add in minor limb animation and eye blinks for maximum cuteness! Check out the behind the scenes below!

Hello and welcome to the Boss 101 Weekend Update. Lots of news as well as results from the Suggest a Hat contest are in this update! Let’s get moving shall we?

Hat Contest Winners are HERE!

First off – we had originally planned to have three hats made for the contest but since there were so many great suggestions we upped that number to SEVEN. That’s right we picked seven hats from YOUR SUGGESTIONS to be put inside Boss 101. We had nearly 200 entries across seven websites and THANK YOU SO MUCH for taking a moment to suggest something to us!

The winners are below and as you look at them please consider the following points if you don’t see YOUR particular suggestion in the winning bracket.

- Some entries were copies or close to hats we already had in the game. As a reference we had nearly 300 hats in Boss 101 BEFORE the contest. Many suggestions ended up being close to hats we already had and they didn’t make much sense to do again.
- Your winning suggestion might have been combined with a similar suggestion. We had a few duplicates and some of these were chosen by the team.
- Your hat suggestion might have gotten modified to fit the Boss 101 style. This is not a slam on anyone’s suggestion but it is part of our effort to stick with the art style and game themes we have.
- Any suggestions we didn’t choose and isn’t already being done is now on list of possible hats for Boss 102. So much good stuff will not go to waste!
- If your hat idea wasn’t picked you’re still a good person and we love you!

Hello and welcome to the Boss 101 Weekly Development Update!

Ship date and Project Status – hint – GOOD NEWS EVERYONE!


Let’s get to the main question on many people’s minds. The SHIP DATE for Boss 101 – aka “When can I get my hands on it?” First you will have to indulge us a little with a SHORT progress update before we start rolling on that hot topic. Between points look for screens and updates about various Boss 101 systems!

Development Team Progress

OK, there is no way to simplify this one other than to just come right out with it. A giant confluence of personal events happened in the last few weeks that effectively slowed us down on the way to ship. We can’t and won’t bore you with the details but it involved not just one but TWO of our team having several important family events happen as well as what can best be described as an act of nature (FYI – this is Hurricane Harvey in the Gulf Coast and we live in the southern United States).

All of us are safe and fine and our families are doing well. I mention the hurricane mostly since it slammed us right around the time of the family visits and put some slight hiccups in the timing of our plans. All is getting straightened out so no worries.

I do mention this stuff because I want to be honest and straight forward with you about what is going on. I have said it before but we are three people and for the last three years we have pretty well worked ahem – rigorous game development conditions. (Also known as – eating lots of ramen).

No complaints here and we aren’t looking to make excuses. Thing is, we can’t ignore life completely during game development and this close to the end we do our best to stay completely focused. Alas, that just could not happen in the last few weeks.

Regardless, what’s done is done and now let’s move onto the next topic.

Status of the Project

Going VERY well. We’ve been handing out BETA keys to people and getting great responses. At the same time there is a fine tuning pass and many bug fixes happening. This is all going about as well as can be expected and nothing super surprising has occurred at this point. Mostly, it’s just been solid work all the way through.

Still, we are determined to clean up the game as completely as we can FOR YOU and for us. This does mean some tuning and bug fixes are still in the works but we are really in that final stretch.

Shipping Date (Range)

Well, the short story here is we expect it out BEFORE Thanksgiving this year (that’s November 23rd I think). Really though we expect it out before that.

There are a lot of reasons for this thinking. There are no new features. We are primarily tuning and bug fixing and the work we have on the list is not pressing, it’s just time consuming. That adds up to not a lot left and a LOT of confidence on our end.

Still – that’s not an EXACT date I know. I can tell you this, the MOMENT we think we can drop the landing gear we will TELL YOU A SPECIFIC DATE! Right now, it just wouldn’t make a lot of sense to say Nov 23rd since we might be earlier and saying something too early only leads to frustration BEYOND the normal development frustration of waiting for a game you want.

We would LOVE to get the game in your hands in the next month and if we see that is a real possibility we will post on every site we can and broadcast it all over. Right now the ONLY reason we aren’t laying a date down is there is just enough stuff left and there was just enough of a production hiccup (see talking point #1) that I (Tim) feel we need a week or two to stabilize before getting a clear assessment.

Again – we are not holding on to the game for any reason other than quality for YOU. Please remember we do NOT have a publisher and all development comes straight out of our own money. Ours. Not a Kickstarter. Not a publisher. Not a gumball machine. Our own money pays for Boss 101 and so does our own time.

I know it can be hard to not have a simple date to look forward to but the whole point of Boss 101 was to make a game we felt right about and felt gave you the most value and fun. Laying a date down before we feel good about it doesn’t get you or us anything.

Trust us though – I’m sure MANY smarter people would and could have made Boss 101 in a different and perhaps faster fashion. Sure, sure. I can guarantee one thing though – the Boss 101 YOU play will be packed with as much FUN and VALUE as we can give you. We really hope you feel the game was UNDERPRICED at $9.99! HAAAAA! Wouldn’t that be nice! More game for you and a great price!

This will be dedicated to any and all bug fixes found by ourselves and the community. Also we will be looking at consoles and other languages.

That does remain to be seen and it also will depend on YOUR excitement and purchasing of the game. We would love to get Boss 101 on as many console and in as many languages as possible!

Welcome to the Boss 101 development update and we hope you are doing awesome!

Tuning and polish CONTINUED!


As you know we are winding down the project and the last things on the list besides bug fixing are the tuning and polish for the game. Let’s talk about balancing the nearly 300 hats we have in the game shall we?

Hat Tuning

So, to deal with the AMAZING amount of hats and give you the most fun we did a few things…

First – we allow you to wear a hat for its ABILITY or its LOOK or BOTH. That is to say you can look one way and still use ANOTHER hat for its powers. This was something we added a while back when we realized you might find a nice hat you personally like but have another hat with abilities you need.

For us personally we appreciate when a game allows us to dress up our characters the way we want. We wanted to give YOU that ability too!

After the hats are in we then move into the handy dandy editor to assign abilities, balance things and adjust the cost of the hat.

Of course if you want to see where things REALLY start then you would look at this spreadsheet created with all the hats on it. It’s where the balancing starts. Initial numbers, powers and cost are laid out here and referenced as we transfer them into the editor.

Honestly, it’s a lot easier to start with a spreadsheet like this since you can look at everything at once as well as create relationships and track totals for things like “how many hats use the fire resistant ability” and stuff like that.

OK – this is a simplified look at the process but does cover the basics. Really it comes down to what feels right in the game and what feels the most fun for you the player. Spreadsheets and editors are only the start.

Hello and welcome to the latest Boss 101 update!

Tuning, polish and everything else

We’re still in it folks. Bringing you our best as quick as we can. This week saw a lot of final weapon balancing along with a bit of dialog adjustment. Mostly we are looking to fine tune the Boss 101 experience and give you a fun world to explore and learn about. We’re not going to shortchange you on the action either – we want that to be fun as well!

To that end let’s look at some of the things we added in the World Building category. You might have noticed the Hotline phone in the Command Center already. It’s the place Tanya and other important people can contact you about important news in your section of the galaxy.

Here we see a conversation with Tanya and the guys. Needless to say they can be a bit.. ahem… irreverent.





The idea with the phone and other things in the Command Center is to help the place feel like something with lots to explore, see and interact with. When we are working on Boss 101 the big question is always “Is this fun?” and “Will the player understand this?” A lot of times we are going on gut instinct but we like to think we are giving you an extra big value when you play Boss 101. There is a lot there for you to explore or not explore. It’s really up to you!

End of Round Fun

We spoke about this before but we added a few little fun bits to the end of the rounds to make your rewards even cooler!

Cash goes flying from the tally area to your cash bar. Come on now – who doesn’t want a jackpot! You can speed it up by pressing the action button too!



Also, the medal slam down with your button presses for extra interactive fun! You know you like slammy whammy award plates! They’re fun! Haha



Finally we end with a little peak at one of the cinematics from early in the game. This is the guys relaxing after a hard day’s battle. Everyone needs a break. Steve and Max are no exception!

Hello and welcome to the latest Boss 101 update

Friends, we have been working like DEMONS I tell you. DEMONS! We are looking to wrap up Boss 101 soon and by that we hope weeks. At the most we are talking about a couple months. Basically, the sooner the better!

So what the frag is taking so long!?!?

Nothing other than the work at hand. When we started this journey with you we knew there would be a lot of ups and downs. We knew some development features would go smooth and some would go rough. We knew and adjusted. We also feel we have been good about keeping YOU informed about the state of the game and the progress we are making.

Since we last spoke we have been dealing with things like damage tuning and store prices. We know that might not seem exciting to read but it's important and affects your experience. Because of this, we want to make sure it’s fun!

Upgrade Pricing

We are putting in final pricing for all the things like upgrades, hats and guns. FUN STUFF! You might be asking yourself “SELF, how do they do this?”

Good question – well we do it with spreadsheets and a heaping of ‘fun’. The idea is we want you to be able to get what you want and also not allow an easy stomp through the game. We are sure a few people will be able to do amazingly well though – no doubt.

How we did our pricing was to look at the rewards per round over the entire game, come up with an average amount you MIGHT get and then calculate how much money you can reasonably achieve by the end of the game. From there we took that money pool and divided it among the things you can buy. We left room for very expensive items and also the idea you might not be able to buy every single little thing in every store BUT that you would be able to buy what you need to finish the game and have fun doing that!

A few of you might have wondered if we are supporting the PS controller type. Well, we spoke about this and are adding it to the game. Right now we are in the process of testing it and we’ll keep you posted. We know it might not seem like much to see the PS controller buttons on screen for various prompts but for a few of you who really enjoy their PlayStation style action they will appreciate it.

What a week, what a week! Lots of things to talk about so let’s get moving shall we?

Playtesting and First Looks

Right out of the gate we have two first look videos for Boss 101. These are from Indie Game Riot and and Matt “ToborPrime” Fitzgerald. We provided keys and they both took time this week to look at the game live on Twitch (with some of the Boss 101 team in the chat).

Pretty exciting stuff and I can tell you it was amazing watching people play the game. I can’t speak for Joshua or Manon but MAN I was nervous as I watched them navigate around the game. We’re still balancing and playtesting but it looked like they had a lot of fun which is what mattered.

Recommend checking either stream out though Matt did do more varied voice acting for the Boss 101 characters! HAHAHA! He made Rob sound like Randy “Macho Man” Savage. WAHAHAH!

There it is! The ship date for Boss 101.

We have been working on this game for over three years and the date is finally here. Really crazy stuff and we are excited and anxious about getting the game to you. All the updates, all the development and testing. It will all be in your hands soon.

We would also like to thank YOU personally for your patience. We know it’s not easy to wait for a game you want to play. We appreciate your patience and think you will agree it was worth the extra time. We’ve said it before but we certainly didn’t expect this game to go as long as it did. That extra time was about adding in the nice touches we felt were needed. Things like UI improvements, gameplay modes, tweaks to enemy behaviors, extra guns, extra levels, and on and on.

Overall thoughts

What a journey! Boss 101 started over three years ago with the idea to remake the web game. It blew up from there when I (Tim) was lucky enough to team up with two incredibly talented people (Manon and Joshua). The game has evolved so much and the driving design ideas were always “Is this fun? Will people enjoy this? Is this a cool surprise?”

Boss 101 aims to bring you the most entertainment we can deliver for your hard earned money.

Game price is $9.99 and we are looking at running a game launch discount for early purchasers. We want you to have the best price we can offer (and stay in business of course! Haha)

What’s left to do?

Mostly play testing. The last few weeks have been centered on playing the game and cleaning up things to make the user experience better. That will continue. We have more updates and videos planned too so stay tuned for those.

There are still tweaks for gameplay coming but all of that is relatively minor against the scope of the game. You can check out a new Twitch stream below for some examples. All in all though – things are looking pretty good.

Hat Store Displays

Let’s talk about some additions to the hat store to make things easier to read and understand.

So we had an older setup in the store and of course we felt it was so easy to look at and comprehend. Well, let’s be honest here I (Tim) felt it was working as designed. Made sense to me! Of course that is not always the best barometer and playtesting proved we could use a little oomph to clear things up.

What were are talking about is the way hats display their abilities to the player. We have icons for powers and they give you various buffs against bosses. All hats are effectively benefit hats in Boss 101. We don’t have hats that hurt you or limit abilities. Hats will protect and grant bonuses and some are for looks. Knowing that we had to look at some of the symbology we were using.

The buff hats - First we replaced all the down arrows with little blue shields. That alone made things clearer about the hat’s abilities.

We also increased the number size on the display to make it more legible. Believe me there is a LONG story of how we got all these crazy hats with all these crazy abilities. HAHAH! At any rate – numbers got bigger but the real deal was in the hat info panel.

Check out what we did here. We added a larger version of the number but the topper for us was the placement of the hat number at the end of the description with a percentage. We think that percentage makes it pretty clear how the hat works since we felt it was a little nebulous to people at first. Check out these examples.

November is always an interesting release date. I hear others have said its a death sentence going into a store wide sale even 4 weeks before the sale.

However, I think its more of a crazy like a fox thing. I've gotten a lot of wishlists on store wide sales even if it means low purchases. Then the next sale after the store wide sales I do far better numbers even with the same discount.

I wish you luck as I've followed Boss 101 for so long its one of the games that convinced me to jump to GameMaker 2.5+ years ago.

Yah, I have heard many theories on the best time to ship a game based off this or that metric. In my 25 plus years of games I have also witnessed quite a few games ship at various times. The basic deal always seems to boil down to - do the best you can with what you have. That might sound like a fortune cookie but it serves software development well. We feel really good about the game and the value. Based on the initial feedback it looks like people see the game for what it is and are excited.

I agree with the crazy like a fox thing but moreso, I have a lot of faith in the team and the product. I do hope you and others enjoy it as much as we do! We want you to have fun.

What’s been going on with Boss 101 while we prep for release?

Glad you asked!

A lot of tuning, tweaking and adjusting things. Lots of little gameplay tweaks to weapons and the economy. Fixes for the dialog system story to make things clear and above all FUN!

We’re spending a lot of time just playing the game too! Mostly we are aiming to deliver a fun ride through the levels. It’s been great seeing streamers play the game and having a blast picking weapons and hats they like then blowing bosses away.

All in all – it’s been a busy but productive week. We are really looking forward to the release.

Expect us to be around post launch to help answer questions and fix any issues you might have. The ship date is only the beginning!

I like the pig floating around on the balloon. Someone should make a game around that.

I watched beardo and I should point out after all the game's tutorials, there wasn't a tutorial in game how to play unless its in the menu somewhere. I know how people hate tutorials, skip the optional tutorial and then get confused easily while playing.

There's a quote "this boss has a lot of health." Bosses are levels, without that health there'd be no level :)

Wow you can get lost in the game. I think he played the game for 6 minutes within the 55 minutes I watched. There are mini games, menus, and stories to immerse the player. Which is always a great thing. I hear its not what the game brings, but the frills included with the game that make it more desirable.

They've covered space shooters / shmups for a decade (I think).

We agree about the little things too. As much as possible we made Boss 101 to be a complete world you can wander around in. The Command Center was our way of giving you lots of little things to do and see.
