TUGGERANONG BUSHRANGERS QUEANBEYAN BLUES YASS MAGPIES GOULBURN WORKERS BULLDOGS WODEN VALLEY RAMS GUNGAHLIN BULLS BELCONNEN UNITED SHARKS

GEORGE TOOKE SHIELD

WRAP 12 & 13 AUGUST 2017 WRITTEN BY JAMES COMAN

WEST BELCONNEN WARRIORS 30

Tries: R Fulivai, A Greenwood, C Thorley, T Freeman-Quay 2; Goals: R Roberts 5

D QUEANBEYAN KANGAROOS 10

Tries: J Ayers, J Essex; Goals: M Connolly The West Belconnen Warriors have shocked the Queanbeyan Kangaroos 30-10 at Seears Workwear Oval in their final game of the season. Despite the convincing victory, other results will prevent the defending premiers from making finals after narrowly missing out on for and against. With six players absent through various reasons, the Kangaroos started the brighter of the two sides as Josh Ayers crashed over the line off the back of a run from Tolokana Aroha-Tuinauvai.

After entering the break leading 6-4 the Warriors furthered their lead early in the second half when Aidan Greenwood collected a short ball and muscled his way over the line. Frustrated, the Kangaroos gave away repeated penalties and West Belconnen made them pay when Harry Brown set up Chris Thorley while Tori Freeman-Quay bagged two tries. Good footwork from Joshua Essex gave the Kangaroos a late consolation try but it wasn’t enough to stop the Warriors from securing a 30-10 win.

WODEN VALLEY RAMS 42

Tries: J. Carroll, L. Hicks, S. Maloney, K. Posantzis, C. Mcghie, T. Hicks, M. Gilmour; Goals: J. Carroll 6, J. Morgan 1

D GUNGAHLIN BULLS 14

Tries: R. O’Sullivan, D. Williams, D. Low; Goals:S. Ketia Opo The Woden Valley Rams have finished the season on a high after they cruised past the Gungahlin Bulls running in seven tries in a clinical display Despite both teams being out of finals contention, bragging rights and a strong finish to the season was on the line. Woden put together a strong team performance with seven players scoring their seven tries aided by Jayden Carroll who was pin-point with the boot slotting all six of his attempts with prop Jeffrey Morgan even joining in to put one over.

Gungahlin are left to lick the wounds of a turbulent season that saw an unlucky run of injuries, which was too much to overcome and placed them out of finals contention.

TUGGERANONG BUSHRANGERS 42

Tries: S. Fetuani 2, J. Mitchell, Q. Cannon, J. Pollard, T. Vatubuli, I. Afemui, B. Hensen; Goals: J. Mitchell 5

D QUEANBEYAN BLUES 14

Tries: T. Stevens, M. Cullen, J. Stuckey; Goals: J. Baker The Tuggeranong Bushrangers have handed the Queanbeyan Blues their second defeat in as many weeks, after thumping the table toppers by 28 points. After having the minor premiership secure, the Blues opted to rest players ahead of the clash which Tuggeranong needed to win to make finals.

Joshua Mitchell was strong with the boot adding the extras on five occasions and putting the score line beyond doubt. The win sneaks Tuggeranong into fourth spot on the ladder and secures them a semi final against the Yass Magpies on Sunday while the Blues play the Queanbeyan Kangaroos in their semi final.

The decision proved to be fatal as the full strength Tuggeranong side ran in eight tries in a demolition job led by Sateki Fetuani who bagged a double on the day.

YASS MAGPIES 48

Tries: J. Vatikani 2, S. Davis, B. Warner, S. Naughton, S. Naughton, J. Hall, S. Aiolupo; Goals: S. Davis 8

D GOULBURN WORKERS BULLDOGS 22

Tries: C. Hart, Z. Hart, M. Worboys, D. Hately; Goals: B. Hewitt 2, C. Hart 1 The Yass Magpies have booked a spot in the finals after they demolished the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs 48-22 in convincing fashion.

Junior Vatikani ended the match with two tries against his former club while the Magpies shared around the points.

With Goulburn out of finals contention and Yass needing a win to ensure they played finals footy, the Magpies put together one of their best performances of the season.

The Magpies will now face the Tuggeranong Bushrangers in the semi final on Sunday, needing a win if they are to progress through to next round and have a shot at making the 2017 Austbrokers Canberra Raiders Cup Grand Final.

The Magpies recorded eight tries at the Bulldogs home ground with Shaun Davis unstoppable with the boot converting all eight of the Magpies tries.

BLUES FOCUSED ON TASK AHEAD Queanbeyan Blues captain Sammie Wood is taking nothing for granted, despite seeing her side finish the regular season unbeaten with a 32-12 win over the Goulburn Stockmen in the Katrina Fanning Shield at Seiffert Oval. “Regardless that we are unbeaten, the finals are always a clean sheet,” Wood said. “Goulburn really gave it to us tonight, our defence kind of lacked there for a bit so it’s given us something to work on between now and then.” As her teammates posed for team photos after the match to celebrate their success, Wood quickly reminded her troops that they hadn’t won anything yet. “I’m a bit superstitious,” Wood said. “There’s nocelebrating until the job is done.” The Blues were good value for their win as they raced to a big halftime lead on the back of tries to Paris Robinson, Remi Wilton, Regan Hart and Sammie Wood. Cailah Welch opened the scoring for the Blues early in the second half but the Goulburn Stockmen fought their way back into the match as they showed the skill and grit which has seen them secure second place. Having started the game with no players on the bench, the Goulburn were dealt a blow early in the second half when Kristen Williams left the field due to injury. Rather than deter the Stockmen, the blow galvanised them according to their five-eighth Pearl Rakete.

“Having less players makes us work more as a team,” Rakete said. “We’ve played with 13 the last two weeks, one week we played with ten because of injuries.” The Stockmen managed two tries thanks toRakete, who scored one try before setting by Jennaya Ottaway for another. However, the Blues wrapped up the win as Keesha Kapea scored in the dying moments of the match. In matches elsewhere, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos and Yass Magpies claimed wins over the Valley Dragons and West Belconnen Warriors respectively.

MATCH PREVIEW 19 & 20 AUGUST 2017 QUEANBEYAN BLUES V QUEANBEYAN KANGAROOS 3PM SATURDAY AT SEIFFERT OVAL The battle of Queanbeyan will take place in a semi-final blockbuster this weekend as the top two teams battle it out for a spot in the Grand Final. Both the Blues and Kangaroos have dominated the Canberra Raiders Cup this season losing just six matches between them. But back-to-back losses to finish the season, has slowed the momentum of both sides heading into the local derby. The Kangaroos will have the added motivation of captain coach Aaron Gorrell playing his

100th game for the Roo’s but will need to find something special if they are to beat the Blues for the first time this season. Gorrell said he planned eight changes to the side that lost last week and is confident that the team that takes to the field on Saturday has the skill to beat the Blues. “Queanbeyan have been the best team all year,” Gorrell said. “We’re confident of the team we’ll put in front of the blues and if they play to their potential we’ll get the win.”

YASS MAGPIES V TUGGERANONG BUSHRANGERS 3PM SUNDAY AT RAIDERS BELCONNEN The Yass Magpies will be hoping to continue their recent form when they take on the Tuggeranong Bushrnagers in a do-or-die semi-final on Sunday.

Masterminding Yass’ finals charge are the Naughton brothers, Steve and Scott, who shared the Coach of the Year Award at the recent McIntyre Medal Night.

After finishing in 3rd place, Yass will be hoping to hold the mental edge over Tuggeranong after claiming a two point win in the last fixture between these sides.

“We’ll have a look at Tuggeranong during the week.” Scott said. ‘’Our main focus will be focusing on what we’re doing and getting our stuff right.

However, Tuggeranong are on a high after smashing the table topping Queanbeyan Blues 42-14 last week.

“If we do that and play to our ability I think we can win, but she’s defiantly going to be a very tough game because they’re a great football side.”

But with a chance of progressing through to the preliminary finals the match is sure to go down to the wire.

HARDEN HAWKS V BOOROWA ROVERS 3.15PM SATURDAY AT MCLEAN OVAL HARDEN The Harden Hawks are hoping a five game winning streak will help steer them to victory in their qualifying final against the Boorowa Rovers.

With not much to separate the two teams, Harden coach Matt McLay knows the game could go either way but is confident that his team has hit it’s straps at the perfect time.

After finishing as runners up last year, Harden are hoping to go one better this time around but first need to get past a determined Boorowa side.

“We are starting to click and starting to gel at the right time of the year,” McLay said. “Boorowa have some really good players in crucial positions and hopefully we can go a bit better than we did last year.

Boorowa finished last in 2016 but have turned their team around to finish in third place and become genuine premiership contenders. The last time the two teams met they couldn’t be split with the scoreline reading 6-all after the full-time siren.

“It’s going to be a tough physical game, it’ll be a bit of a grind, and it’ll probably go right down to the wire.”

NORTH CANBERRA BEARS V BINALONG BRAHMANS 1.35PM SATURDAY AT MCLEAN OVAL HARDEN The North Canberra Bears will be hoping to defend their title with a win against the Binalong Brahmans in this elimination final.

Bears coach Richard Thorley is happy with the way his team has been preparing but knows the game won’t be won easily.

After finishing in 4th position, the Bears need to win to have any hope of retaining their title.

“It’s going to be a battle without a doubt,” Thorley said. “Our focus is making sure we turn up with the right attitude and turn up mentally and physically prepared for a 70 minute effort.”

The two teams haven’t played each other since round two then the Bears claimed the two points. However, a lot has changed since the last time they met, setting up a clash that could swing either way.
