“Total chaos. They started turning people back at the halfway point while everyone was still coming in behind them.”

One fan said: “Serious crushing at the walkway at the back of the North Stand.”

And another wrote: “Shocking lack of crowd control on Janefield Street. This is dangerous.”

Cops have now vowed to review safety measures.

Chief Superintendent Brian McInulty said: “Officers and stewards reacted quickly upon realising there was an issue and put in place measures to relieve the congestion.

“This included putting in cordons to prevent further entry at Janefield Street and opening up London Road to allow fans access from the south.

“We work closely with Celtic to ensure the safety of all fans.

“We will review the incident to ensure any learning is quickly put in place.”

Olivier Ntcham scored the only goal as Brendan Rodgers’ Bhoys beat Rangers in the season’s first derby clash.

A spokesperson for Celtic said: "We are aware of the issues caused by congestion prior to kick-off.

"We are pleased that stewards and police were able to assist quickly and we thank our supporters for their patience shown while the matter was being dealt with.

"We will work closely with police to investigate and review this matter. The safety of our supporters will always be our priority."
