Chuck Person released from custody, ordered to appear in NY federal court

Auburn associate head coach Chuck Person celebrates Auburn's 83-77 victory over Alabama Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2016, during an NCAA basketball game at Auburn Arena in Auburn, Ala.

Chuck Person was released from custody Tuesday after a hearing in the Middle District Court of Alabama in Birmingham and ordered to appear in federal court in New York in two weeks.

Person was arrested on six federal charges of bribery, fraud and conspiracy on Tuesday as a result of a joint investigation by the FBI and U.S. Attorney's office into college basketball.

After waiving an initial hearing, Person, who Auburn suspended without pay, was ordered by Chief U.S. Magistrate Judge Wallace Capel Jr. to appear in the Southern District of New York on Oct. 10 at 9 a.m. ET to answer the pending charges against him.

Person is being represented by Montgomery-based attorneys Joel Connally and Jeff Duffey.

If found guilty, Person could face a maximum of 80 years in prison.
